If you enjoy Daggerheart, be sure to check out Carlos's great collection of western-themed campaigns. I recently play tested an upcoming one and it was a blast. Unique combination of mechanics and worldbuilding to create some truly memorable sessions.

There’s one week left of Fear Fest. Pistolheart volume 1-3 (and the H&F subclass pack) will be on sale for 30% off through the end of the month. This is the last chance to grab it at a discount before volume 4 comes out. heartofdaggers.com/pistolheart/

Call me crazy, but maybe the pursuit of regular quarterly revenue / subscriber growth isn't a healthy way to run a media company? Netflix has 300M+ subscribers and is forecasting $51.1B in revenue for the year (with over $10B in profit) -- by every metric, they should be stable and healthy.

deadline.comNetflix Q3 2026 Earnings: Stock Drops Again On Lowered GuidanceBattered Netflix shares tumbled further after hours as the company lowered guidance for fourth-quarter 2026 revenue and full-year advertising sales.

Appeasing shareholders with quarterly growth is not conducive to making good art and providing a quality service for the audience. It is, however, a recipe that guarantees that the screws will be turned on subscribers to extract as much money out of them when there are not enough new viewers.

I never thought I'd see "The Devils" in a crowded theater. That it has a week engagement across the country is nothing short of a cinematic miracle. This was my second time seeing it, and I enjoyed it even more this round. It has a richness and audacity sorely missing in most modern films.

It's not for everyone, and I fully expect most people seeing it for the first time to walk away feeling mixed (at best) about it. But hot damn, this was a major film, released by a major studio! Can you imagine any of them releasing anything like this these days? I certainly can't.

The constant amnesia around Musk's antics drives me fucking crazy. The last Roadster he demonstrated didn't even come out, but yeah, sure, the flying one is gonna work exactly like he says. Every single car they release compromises on his outlandish promises (remember the $40k Cybertruck?)

What drives me nuts about the NYT's quoting of Trump is they're willing to excuse / summarize to his benefit, but they never consider it a problem -- removed from his disgusting threatening of LA and San Diego -- that NO ONE CAN CLEARLY PARSE WHAT HE MEANS.

Oh brother.

The frustrating part of the "low-tech" framing is any modern disc release will almost certainly look better than streaming at the same resolution. Especially a 4k disc -- it will have better compression and sound, without a doubt. It's the best way to watch a movie at home, no contest.

Perhaps you’ve ditched algorithmically curated playlists for vinyl and enjoy DVDs rather than streaming

Ah yes, the "Hoover Institution", the first group I associate with Condoleezza Rice. There have been some real asinine and tone-deaf statements today from political figures from both major parties that seem to have zero recollection of what 9/11 and the horrors it spawned were actually like.

Washington Post Opinions@postopinions.bsky.social

"Let us always remember: That those who thought the world could be ruled by hate and fear were wrong. Our country did not let that dark vision of humanity stand," Condoleezza Rice of the Hoover Institution writes. "That vigilance is still required to protect and secure us."

Remind me, Condi, who was the national security advisor to George W. Bush during 9/11 and through the fabrication of WMD evidence that led to the aimless "War on Terror"? I want to say it was someone from the Hoover Institution, but I just cannot remember their name.

Claire Willett is a real one. The Star Trek Snack Squad delivered a massive amount of supplies to the picket lines in 2023. I hope the fans that contributed know just how much we appreciated it; you all kept a lot of folks cool and fueled during a very difficult time.

60 years ago today, Star Trek premiered in the US. To say it's had an impact on my life would be an understatement. Some of my earliest exposure to screenwriting was via scripts for TNG and the TOS films. To write for and be a part of it has been a real joy and privilege. Here's to the next 60! 🖖

TOS and TNG defined my love of Trek in childhood. I would come to DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise later and am a fan of all three. DS9 in particular is, to me, Trek's high-water mark in terms of writing; it brings the horrors of war to the utopia and shows the cost to preserve it.

This thread is growing unwieldy, so I'll stop here for now. Suffice it to say, my love of Star Trek has been lifelong and continues to this day. I've met actors and writers from every series, and it takes all my self control to keep it professional when I really just want to geek out. LLAP. 🖖

TNG eventually became more accessible, and is the series I find the most comforting. It's like a nice blanket or sweater -- it wraps around and comforts the viewer. A personal favorite is "Family", which breaks Picard's stoicism to show the man underneath. Incredible work from Patrick Stewart.

The one Trek nerd fight I avoid at all costs is "which ship is your favorite?" Because truthfully, I could never pick between the Constitution refit and the Galaxy class. How could anyone choose one over the other?

An episode that I remember resonating is a classic: "The Devil in the Dark", which blew my mind by making its "monster" sympathetic, a victim of misunderstanding and fear. It was a story that made me examine how I interacted with and reacted to the world.

TOS episodes eventually led to the TOS movies. 2 and 4 rightly get a lot of praise (and people seem to be coming around on Search for Spock, which was oddly my favorite as a child) but I will always take the opportunity to sing the praises of Undiscovered Country, which is my favorite Trek film.

This anniversary has me ruminating on the various series / films and my experiences with them. TNG aired on a channel with poor reception in rural Arkansas, so I started with TOS via reruns (on the one clear channel) and by renting it on VHS from the video store (betraying my age.)

Enjoyed a great double feature at the theater today. Both “Coyote vs Acme” and “Buddy” are worth a watch. Two radically different yet very well directed and well constructed films. “Buddy” isn’t for everyone, but if you’re a fan of “Too Many Cooks” it’ll likely be up your alley.

RIP Screaming Mad George. There's no film better to honor his memory than "Society", which benefits from the viewer knowing as little as possible before watching it.

If you haven't seen Society, tonight's the night. It's kinda always the night.

I'm seeing increasing discussion on #filmsky about Criterion fans being upset about "KPop Demon Hunters", but all I've seen are reactions to the supposed upset folks and maybe four comments on the subreddit that are negative. Every other reaction is overwhelmingly positive. Did I miss something?

We don't have to pay attention to a few negative folks when they are outliers looking for anything to complain about (the Criterion subreddit post about the November releases has 500+ comments, the vast majority of which are overwhelmingly positive). Let's not pretend they're the norm or widespread.

Again, if I've missed something specific please enlighten me, because as far as I can tell there's next to no one upset about this release (which will justifiably do gangbusters for Criterion)

This was the subtext of the Democrats' economic message in 2024 and we all saw how well that worked out for them. Unfortunately we grade the GOP on a curve, so I expect we'll continue to see a fraction of the articles we saw about Biden's handling of the economy and inflation.

Trump: "The economy is doing unbelievably from the standpoint of Wall Street"

Wow, what mealy-mouthed pressure to commit to theatrical. "At least 45 days (preferably 60 days or more)" -- way to negotiate against yourself in your own letter! The only lesson the studios are gonna take from this is if they threaten to leave LA the unions will roll over.

Daniel Miller@danielnmiller.bsky.social

The DGA and IATSE — two powerful showbiz unions — have sent a letter to CA AG Rob Bonta and Paramount CEO David Ellison urging them to settle the states’ suit seeking to block the company’s merger w/ WBD. It comes a day after CA gubernatorial hopeful Xavier Becerra said the parties should settle.

Adding to Phil's excellent point -- at the end of this merger, Paramount-Skydance will be saddled with $80b in steadily-growing debt. In what world can they afford to pack up and move two lots across the country to a state with very little operational infrastructure?

Is anyone actually offended by this show? For fuck's sake, the X-rated "Fritz the Cat" came out 54 years ago and has scenes about US race relations, our devotion to Israel, drug use, group sex, and revolutionary politics. As far as I can tell, the "offensive" aspect of "Alley Cats" is... they swear?

Pro tip: iOS always requires a password at boot. You can also lock it quickly by pressing the side button five times rapidly. I use both to quickly disable FaceID.

Just as a heads up, passwords are protected in legal situations, like when police or customs wants to “just see” your phone, but biometrics are not.

While the NYT runs an op-ed from David Ellison claiming we're all wrong about his politics and to just trust him, several outlets are reporting that 60 Minutes (which Ellison owns) decided not to air a story about Epstein's banking schemes. They even interviewed a senator for it!

I don't know how to explain to the people who pop up when creatives complain about "AI" to say there are legit uses for it just how much they sound like someone saying "Well actually fire is used to make bread" when people are talking about an organized arson ring burning down their fucking houses

Congrats everyone, we've built a computer that doesn't work, makes the user dumber, and insist everyone use it. And regardless of whether or not you do interact with it, you still get to pay for it!

To Dan's point, this is the only film I can think of that had a similarly protracted production, and that's with a very large asterisk since most of the early footage was repurposed.

A physician I know would spend their entire day in 2020 tending to people dying from COVID, then go home and have their parents tell them to their face that it was a hoax. When the doctor would try to share what they were seeing, they were dismissed and told they're just confused.

Back in 2020, as a pediatric hematologist married to a physician, we signed up to volunteer in a field hospital for patients with COVID. We wrote our wills and worried about getting our kids sick. I posted about terrifying outcomes in kids and received death threats. Fauci is a goddamn hero.

So many institutions have failed us, whether it's the media's inability to push back on wild, bullshit claims from the GOP (COVID and beyond), the government's slavish devotion then and now to an ignorant, misogynist, and racist narcissist, or the immediately wilting "opposition" of the Democrats.

The Criterion Channel is by far the best streaming service. It is regularly filled with a great variety of titles from across the globe. It’s also the only service that I will not cancel, thanks to their deal that locked day one subscribers in at their launch price.
