Some ~personal~ news: After five years, I have been laid off from @the-independent.com. I am grateful for the time I have had there. With that in mind, I am absolutely looking for new work opportunities, especially ahead if the midterms. My email is EMGarcia2009@gmail.com. My signal is emgarcia.85

I'm 35. Barack Obama is the only president in my lifetime who did not leave office after being impeached or in disgrace.

Something that stood out to me when I was in Greensboro, how many Black women were conscientious of their grandparents' role in fighting for their right to vote. "Ancestors have fought for this right, and so it’s my duty to do it," one of them said thepoliticalspectrum.substack.com/p/theyre-att...

One of the better pieces I read about Brazil before the first round elections described how online betting permeated through Brazil. After Brazil's World Cup squad selected Neymar, he urged fans to visit a betting platform that sponsors him. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/01/w...

Lula won in part by banning online gambling

Labor largely supporting the Vietnam War and George Meany not getting behind McGovern caused the split between the left and labor that never fully recovered. Only recently has it regained steam and not because labor won back old white guys. But because the managerial class is unionizing.

One of the most informative pieces I read after the 2024 election was this in the Philadelphia Inquirer. Many Teamsters and union members decided to vote for Trump even as he's anti-labor because of immigration and being opposed to transgender people. www.inquirer.com/politics/ele...

inquirer.comSocial issues drove some Teamsters to ‘take that risk’ and vote for anti-union candidate TrumpRepublicans elevated culture-war issues alongside economic ones to siphon working-class support from Democrats in a way longtime Teamsters said was unprecedented.

RFK Jr, meeting with the Kent County GOP alongside Mike Rogers and John James, railed against the Muslim Brotherhood by claiming the organization is “why you don’t see any Arab Muslims winning the Nobel.”

As of Sunday, voters in North Carolina between the ages of 18 and 25 are voting at 2.1 times the pace they did in 2022 and Black voters are voting at 1.6 times the pace they did in 2022. #NCPol #NCSen #NCGA thepoliticalspectrum.substack.com/p/theyre-att...

Something that stood out to me when speaking to young Black women in Greensboro who went to vote: They are fully aware of what their ancestors and grandparents did to win them the right to vote and they don't take that for granted. #NCPol #NCSen thepoliticalspectrum.substack.com/p/theyre-att...

NEW: After the Guilford County Board of Elections denied students in Greensboro an on-campus polling site, many young Black students turned out on the final day of Souls to the Polls. It could make the difference in #NCPol #NCGA thepoliticalspectrum.substack.com/p/theyre-att...

A friend of mine told me six months ago that whichever party figures out a good message on education will win over AAPI voters and whichever party figures out a good message on the economy will win over Hispanic voters. Feels like that is the case right now.

President Lula after Flavio Bolsonaro mocked his missing finger: “I will not allow a militiaman to call me ‘nine fingers’. He has never worked a day in his life. He doesn't know what an employment book is.” Lula’s little finger was amputated after an industrial accident as a metalworker in 1964.

Lula once said he was grateful that Lionel Messi didn’t play as well for Argentina as he did for Barcelona. But, like Messi, Lula likely pulled off his greatest achievement in his final act. This photo goes hard

A RED STAR SHINES OVER BRAZIL! Lula is reelected! Brazilians managed to mobilize and beat Bolsonaro, Trump, Meta, Google, Netanyahu, media oligarchs, corrupt judges, fascism, imperialism, apathy and hatred! May this victory bring hope to all our comrades fighting across the world! We can beat them

This is also a huge black eye for Marco Rubio too, who has wanted to reshape Latin America into right-leaning governments
