The MAGA movement is cocooning. It’s going dormant and will metamorphose, emerging in a couple of years in a different form. Metamorphosis enables Republicans to erase their own failures from memory and reconstitute as if their movement was something new. epurchaseattack.substack.com/p/the-ominou...

epurchaseattack.substack.comThe Ominous Absence of MAGA HatsHas anyone seen the MAGA cap I passed as I left the local Chinese restaurant the day after the 2024 election?

What strikes me is that Healy says he wants to hear Mark's criticism of #NYT but spends the whole time dismissing it, saying why it isn't valid. The self-regard of the mainstream press is unshakable.

The inability of the 117th Congress & Biden admin to hold the first Trump regime accountable for corruption, maladministration during a pandemic, attempted auto coup, conspiracy to defraud the people, & inciting insurrection is the worst accountability failure in U.S. history. Dems must use power.

FWIW, I refer to this as "closing the hardball gap." It's the idea that asymmetric adherence to norms is itself destablizing, and that norm-breaking can/should be done in democracy's defense. This is a bit dated but it gets at the basic point:

President Trump and the Republicans had a two year romp through every political fantasy nourished in their heart since The John Birch Society and Richard Nixon, and you know what: it turns out their ideas were bad and are tanking the economy.

“ If we only win this election on affordability concerns, on the economy, then we’re not planting any seeds for a long-term refutation of this really anti-American authoritarianism.”

Crucial from @paulcrider.liberalcurrents.com: Trump's implosion is enabling Dems/libs to reach lots of new voters. "It’s an opportunity to plant long-term seeds about the vision we want." Dems like Ossoff/Talarico are meeting this antifascist moment. Our exchange: newrepublic.com/article/2165...

Republican Party: Say you want jobs and growth. Republican voters: I want jobs and growth. Democrats: Supporting poor children turns them into healthier, more productive adults. RP: Say you don't want to be told what to think. RVs: I don't want to be told what to think.

Republican voters: "I voted for Trump 3 times. I'm not voting Republican this time, but I can't bring myself to vote for Democrats." Why not? "It's too embarrassing to admit I've been wrong my whole life and those sanctimonious Democrats have been right."

Satan: "Tell them to burn it all down. They'll be stupid enough to fall for it, and you'll get tax breaks." Tech bros: "I'll pay you a lot of money to tell people to burn it all down." Right-wing media: "Burn it all down!" Republicans: "Let's burn down the tech bros, too." Satan chuckles.

2028 Republican focus group: "I personally don't like Satan, but I'll vote for him because Jesus is a communist." "I just like Satan's economic policies." "I'm going to vote for Satan based on my deep Christian faith." "The Samaritans are ruining this country. Jesus is too soft on them."

I am old enough to remember Richard Nixon. What he did was criminal, but basically more stupid than anything. He didn't hurt American citizens. He was just paranoid. Compare to Trumpy who has cost everyone so much, it's not even a fair comparison. Trumpy makes billions while all of us suffer.

Their thinking is his thinking: We'll stick with our notions even if it kills us and everyone else.

Greg Sargent@gregsargent.bsky.social

"If Trump is taking America down, if he is going to bury this country, all the good in it and all its prosperity and potential, then he wants his most adoring and loyal retainers with him. He wants his cult locked inside." Good from @aselrod.bsky.social on MAGA as death cult:

The end result is that an increasing share labor productivity accrues not to workers but to corporate profits.‘ www.hussmanfunds.com/comment/mc26...

Republican voters: "Democrats try to tell us what to think." Trump: "Canada has been taking advantage of us for years." Republican voters: "Canada has been taking advantage of us for years."

"I will admit to being surprised at the extent to which elites in 2025 seemed to surrender...we cannot throw out MAGA just to be left with the same worthless leadership class." Everything goes back to the fatal overreading of 2024. As we said on Half the Answer, screw you for getting that so wrong.

Alan Elrod@aselrod.bsky.social

So @adamgurri.liberalcurrents.com is right. You can say we have bad elites. It’s more important to reinvigorate our society by creating new paths to the top, expanding the seats that exist at the old institutions like HYPS, & rethinking what values we extol. www.liberalcurrents.com/editors-note...

Republicans freaking out about rare gender transformations is really a displacement of the fear that's too awful for them to face: voter transformations from Republican to Democrat.

It is honest to say that America’s fiscal deficit problem has one cause: Republicans. But honesty, of course, is not something you get for free: it is a discipline you have to train for, which is why we get things like the passive voice in the title of this chart of the day: **The U.S... 1/

braddelong.substack.comThe U.S. Federal Fiscal Flow Deficit Problem: CHART OF THE DAYRepublican tax cuts for the rich created the problem; please name and shame; restoring the Clinton-Gore tax rates and tax base is the solution; pass it on...

From here on, Democrats' motto should be: No compromise with failure. Stop trying to split the difference with Republicans whose ideas don't work. Insist on full implementation of Democratic ideas that do work.

To be a Republican you must be a good liar. "Good liar" doesn't mean telling plausible lies. It means persisting in the lie no matter what, even after everyone else knows it's a lie.
