Obviously our minds are drawn to recent elections but what's a historical one where something like this could have made a difference?

Brazil’s results tonight are a big endorsement for the idea that every country should have a second “are you you sure about that” election a couple weeks after the first one for the important stuff

I talk to a lot of people about starting magazines and they always reject my suggestion that a 1000-1500 word piece is a good solid length that new readers will start and finish. Everyone wants to publish long form stuff and they want to do it right away! Anyway that's what T's post brought to mind.

Seeing tenured scholars argue for LLM use in drafting/writing papers or doing peer review feels like the pinnacle of academic antinomianism. “I don’t have to do the work anymore because I’m one of the elect.”

There was a semi-coherent academic soteriology that you could see articulated around increasing adjunctification but this has been a significant evolution. It’s really offensive to all of us who tried to be your colleagues. The ones you called failures to avoid thinking of yourselves as workers.

When I was little, the asthma medicine I was on meant that I had to get my blood drawn every two weeks to make sure I didn't have too much in my body. Then for a long time I had 3 inhalers + nebulizer + ER visits. Now I take 1 inhaler once a day. My asthma's still very bad. The meds are much better.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

There was a fucking hole in our planet’s *atmosphere* Like a legit, no joke, “this will unravel our entire ecosystem” hole in the world, and then we fixed it by working together across national and political lines As a species we decided, “we will survive” Let’s do that some more

Yes, it challenged me with problems like fording the river vs paying for a ferry, dysentery, and having to leave behind 90% of the buffalo I'd shot. It helped me learn important lessons like "your life will be full of problems you do not understand and can't solve."

Americans who went to school in the 90s: did you play Oregon Trail? Did EVERYONE play Oregon Trail? I keep seeing it come up and wonder if it was truly that prevalent

Novelist David Baldacci was stunned when his son showed him a story he’d asked ChatGPT to generate in the style of his father’s work. Since then, he has been at the forefront of the legal fight to protect copyright—and the future of writing and reading—in the United States.

"I really felt like it was my duty," Ebro Ahmed, 27, told ABC News. "Also, too, it’s kids we’re talking about, you know. Even if I were to die, it would still be worth it." “Ahmed also credited the long-running TV drama "Grey's Anatomy" for helping him stay calm in the heightened situation.”

Seen this story all day today. Every headline says "27 year old Minnesota man..." I have yet to see one with the headline that the man was Somalian. The most maligned and denigrated group in Minnesota www.goodmorningamerica.com/news/story/2...

Well, I emailed 100+ authors houses across the country and every English department, ed school, writing center, and T&L center in CT, RI, and Western MA and the result is . . . all of my ads, on every platform, on work and personal devices, are for MFA programs.

I am compiling a HUGE list of writing workshops, creative writing programs, and historic author's homes to share this with (along with a free virtual ticket for staff) so lmk if you know an org I should contact.

Number 1023 in a town of 20k in a state with no serious contests. Constant stream of voters in and out. I know towns complain about having to run early voting but the people sure do like it. #NutmegSky

Only polling place manipulation I dealt with was that they made the community center driveway one way recently and I had to go around the block because I missed the entrance.

I mean, not understanding my discipline doesn't really stop anyone on here from speaking on it with confidence, so sauce for the goose, I guess.

Are we gonna do this, Bluesky? Are we all just gonna not understand accounting? 72B$ of the 80B$ is convertible notes. They became greater liabilities because the company's valuation skyrocketed. They don't have an 80B$ loss in the sense that almost everyone here is imagining.

All of the suggestions are good--but come on, folks, I bet you have a line or two that you love from a dark horse candidate.

A weird request I really need some help with: I'm looking for great quotes about history written/said BY WOMEN (and yes, I know Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, obv)

I'm not saying that naming Caroll Smith-Rosenberg would be like naming a band's biggest hit and then knowing nothing else from their catalog, but I'm not NOT saying that.

OK, I knew it was going to be bad but I didn’t know it was going to be that bad

In this explosive follow up to the story about the American Historical Association's use of DC lobbyists to silence AHA member Palestine advocacy, we have this: AHA is conducting a witchhunt of its Council. Loyalty oaths. Lawyers. Threats. Authoritarian behavior. www.chronicle.com/article/the-...

You don’t know we joke about the fact that tenure doesn’t actually mean that you become brave and start taking stands? Apparently you need to be congressionally chartered to move from cowardice to absolute paranoia.

So when I wrote this, the president of the AHA said the biggest danger to the field was historians being too presentist, making wild and dangerous connections between the past and the present. The fear of advocacy runs deep.

The Mail misquotes Macbeth here - a scene where Macduff, here the avatar of moral good & righteousness, explicitly shows it by welcoming a stranger as kin: MACDUFF: See, who comes here? MALCOLM: My countryman, but yet I know him not. MACDUFF: My ever-gentle cousin, welcome hither.
