our design engineer jason (or is it json?) took every detail of our benchmarks site and made it between 100-1000x* better *on the luke scale of "this rocks"

Our benchmarks got a fresh look, with new ways to explore performance, and a few new capabilities for agentic tooling. Read about some of our favourite changes ↓ www.vlt.io/blog/more-th...

Just learned that if you want a real croissant in canada, you need to look for 'butter croissant'. I thought that was a required ingredient. If you don't, you will get a dry croissant-shaped pastry made with margarine and it's day and night 😭

truly a wild time to be alive when the cryptography world is split between those worried about quantum computers and those whose private key is “4”

Why is it still so hard in Spotify to see some metadata about tracks. I'm curious about release years all the time

It's weird that covid is longer ago than all of high school took. Those 2 durations feel so different

After the firefighting is done (and a nap) we'll need to have a long, serious conversation about the state of non-browser non-platform X.509 verifiers. The Linux status quo is "a pile of PEM files behind a dumpster" and that's not an acceptable excuse for a root store in 2026.

RAM is the new bottleneck. Every Node.js process is fighting for memory: containers, serverless, cloud bills, k8s limits. And here's the maddening part: V8 can use half the memory with one flag, and almost nobody turns it on.

I wish there was a watch like this Casio but the buttons connect to home assistant via thread or ZigBee or whatever.

Putting the room in disco mode is way more fun this way vs bringing a phone out or lame-ass voice control

bro you seem a bit intellectually incurious today is everything alright

Fun fact about the NPM replication feed. If you just follow the feed to get updates for ever package, you will miss packages because they retroactively insert changes in the *past* of the feed.

So to accurately replicate NPM, it's not enough to follow the 'sequential' feed, you also have to go back later to see if you missed anything. 🫠

I suspect that this happened when NPM transitioned from CouchDB to Postgres. They kept the CouchDB replication feed protocol but it was no longer consistent.

ESLint jumped in install size by 2MB recently from a basic dependency update. Here's a short thread of the observations 🧵

on the ⚡️ @vlt.io ⚡️ registry we serve metadata that is 70% smaller which is one reason (out of many!) that we're able to do clean installs in 20-70% less time when you point to our registry vs npmjs.org. i wrote about how we did it:

vlt.ioHow we made registry metadata 70% smaller | vlt /vōlt/Package managers download megabytes of package metadata on every clean install. Here is how vlt.io serves the same installs at a fraction of the size.

I've called this the 'The Kobayashi Maru' interview question for programmers. There's no "right" answer only painful trade-offs which makes it very revealing.

I need to decide if 1KB means 1,000 bytes or 1,024 bytes in all of my software I was leaning 1,024 but it looks like macOS and Windows both define KB as 1,000 these days I want whatever people are most likely to understand (I do not think most people know what KiB or MiB means)

Woah 190 people took a look today apparently and 62 areas were claimed. 🎉 #retrogaming #simcity #citybuilder

Ever since I realized that Sim City Classic was released as open source (under the name Micropolis) I wanted to do this. I hope people like it! Lets see if the little raspberry pi can stand some concurrency

There's a kid on the playground named Diablo. New one for me. I wonder if they googled the meaning

Doing some Google Cloud stuff after years of mostly AWS. Seems like their UI has gotten a bit better! AWS is still terrible, but GCP used to be worse.

My Sony TV was getting slow, and I was able to turn on developer mode and use adb to find bad behaving apps and uninstall them. Recommended!

notion could be so nice if they weren't so cavalier with ux expectations and break things that should just work like copy-paste. good feature set but bad taste.

Publishing a large monorepo of interdepent modules has become impossible with the new change on npm: the new scan thing delays every publishing substantially, and it does not recognize a batch. Maybe one should try doing a staged publishing and then do 15-20 clicks to approve them all?
