That said, I had so much fun in a D&D game where my DM knew Accurate Boat Stuff and my PC who was supposedly a boater continually mispronounced or misnamed things. "Ah yes, reel in the windsheet and wrap it up on the floor. The boat's swain will be here soon."

I would much rather look at a YouTube thumbnail from a photoshop amateur than an AI one. Hell, my immediate distaste for AI thumbnails only encourages me to never improve my crappy Photoshop skills. I already get enough grief from bozos who accuse my poorly photo-chopped images of being AI slop.

I published a video on YouTube today and have been so curious how this one is getting 4x the views but not the normal % of Likes and 0 comments. Sigh. It's the YouTube change in what counts as a "view." How can anyone actually know anything? Literally everything is enshittifying in real time.

Dungeons & Discourse is fine they just know how to monetize a YouTube channel and that means these thumbnails or no profit. That means reactionary bullshit or no profit. That means compromise or no profit. It’s rare for it to work out any other way. The industry is the nightmare not the artists.

But I’m never really tempted by the suggestions to A/B test my content, make more shorts, or the flirtation that an AI thumbnail would be so easy to make. I’m making the kind of content that I want to see on YouTube. As soon as I make slop, I’m the problem.

I am often stuck in the loop of seeking validation from the subscriber numbers. I install and uninstall YT Studio from my phone every couple of weeks. (I do the same with bluesky and Reddit.)

I think about how YouTube incentivizes slop ALL THE TIME as I am, I guess, a YouTuber. Once you make a couple of semi-popular videos, the pitches from YouTube start coming and it’s easy to get hooked.
