I'm pleased to announce version 1.0 of `tact`, an app for stochastic polytomy resolution on phylogenies using taxonomy. A decade after the first line of code, scientists are still using `tact` to build complete trees of fish, termites, magnoliids, and more. Thank you! (🧵1/3)

New paper in @pnas.org ! 🐟 Fish swim faster when they beat their tails faster... but not in a straight line, like we've assumed since 1958. It bends at low speeds, and the shape of the body wave matters a lot! www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

Any fish folks?

Can I get a fish expert, either illustrator, scientist, or outdoors person familiar with anatomy who I can email my sketch of a Sacramento perch to check the gill cover/facial anatomy of art I’m doing for park signage? Fish are still a new-ish subject for me and I need fresh eyes plz. #SciArt 🐟

New paper on some very large ray-finned fish fossils! Thank you to Elizabeth Furman this awesome illustration. TLDR: Large early ray-finned fishes are rare, but show very different morphologies to the point that big body size is associated with distinct ecomorphologies. mapress.com/zt/article/v...

I have modernized and enhanced the NSF COA generator tool. Results now update dynamically • Published under more than one name? Covered! • Other people share your name? No problem! • You prefer searching by ORCID? Go ahead! Give it a try. Feedback, bug reports, feature requests are MOST welcome! 🧪

When applying to NSF for funding, each senior personnel has to provide a “Collaborators and Other Affiliations” (COA) form, which can be quite onerous. A couple of years ago I created a tool bit.ly/NSF_COA for automating this, and recently hardened it. I hope it is of use, and feedback is welcome! 🧪

Seconded!

Check out this lovely profile of the University of California, Davis’s Peter Wainwright, whose lifelong fascination with fishes inspired a remarkable career in research and teaching. Peter was my postdoc advisor years ago when he was at Florida State University, and is awesome dude and mentor.

If you're submitting a reference letter for a PRFB, I was surprised to not see any option for deleting and reuploading, which contradicts the info provided in the email requesting it. In fact, as soon as you select the file it is uploaded and you can't change it. Was fine for me, but beware.

The ones I use (Nikon D7200) are sadly no longer sold or even supported - so do folks have some good recommendations?

Camera recommendations for fish specimen photography? Ideally these would be able to be used for 2d morphometrics.

Really nice article laying out the semantics of sex/sexes that causes persistent confusion and arguing in our community. It lays out the undisputed patterns in biology and makes clear any "lack of consensus" on sex/sexes is arguing across different levels. academic.oup.com/icb/article/...

Our paper (also, my first first-author paper) is now available in MEE early view! In this study, we introduced a state-dependent Ornstein-Uhlenbeck model we implemented in RevBayes to test adaptive hypotheses in macroevolution. (1/3) besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Hey Bluesky! Emerging from my dissertation-formatting cave to share that I defended my PhD last week! So many incredible people helped me reach this point, especially over the last few months as I scrambled to finish in time. I’m lucky to be surrounded by such good friends.

The lab and I are halfway through our final data collection trip to the Smithsonian fish collections. So far we have measured 1236 specimens from 483 species in 75 families. Here is one of my favourite so far, a Galapagos four-eyed blenny (Dialommus fuscus) which is amphibious.

Also want to thank guest measurer @jackstack.bsky.social who spent 5 days working on extant fishes! As well as my lab, including new postdoc Dr Emanuell Duarte-Ribeiro and incoming PhD student Connor Downs. Plus longtime fish measurers and stalwarts of the lab, Mason Thurman and Marina Carbi.

Did you write your comment yet on the OMB rules on federally funded science yet? No? Don’t worry, you can do it this weekend. Here are some resources that can help you get started.

Our warmest and wildest 100th birthday wishes to Sir David Attenborough, vice-patron of our Society. Today, we are celebrating Priam's Birdwing, which he said he would include in his "ark" to protect from extinction. This illustration is from E Donovan's "An Epitome of...Insects of India" (1800).

‼️NEW ANGLERFISH PAPER! 🐟🎣 So excited to share the final part of my Master’s research! We explore the bizarre tacklebox of anglerfish lures and show how these fishes evolved different ways to attract prey and maybe even mates in the deep sea. 🧪🦑🌊🦇🦀 Open access paper link: doi.org/10.1643/i202...

This is a great idea! I can’t go to #Evol2026 as I will be doing museum “fieldwork” but others should take note.
