And our members who voted. You signalled your solidarity, you drew a red line, and you handed us both the sword and the shield to keep defending our brilliant university.

To achieve these figures over a summer of annual leave, targeted cuts and violently compressed timelines is nothing short of remarkable. Lucky to be part of such a collective. ✊ #DefendExeterUni

The early mobilising in that first VONC, and those speeches still ringing in our ears. The organising from branch and region that launched the dispute and won that ground-shifting vote to ballot. The webpage, the emails, the blogs, the spreadsheets, and everything in between.

Our faculty, department and professional services reps across three faculties and three campuses, holding people together in impossible conditions. More than 40 GOTV volunteers, members and retired members alike, making thousands of individual calls, emails and messages.

While there is some relief in the threat of compulsory redundancies being removed, we are also thinking of the amazing colleagues we are losing through so-called voluntary redundancy. These colleagues are experts in their fields, they are our academic community, and they are fantastic educators

who have inspired generations of students. Their leaving is a loss for our university. Pressures on remaining staff will increase and students’ experience will be impacted. And all this time, we haven’t seen convincing arguments as to why so many members of staff should have to go.

If you have not posted your ballot yet, do it TODAY. A strong ballot result will help us fight for the University we want. Will help protect us. Will help #DefendExeterUni

The University of Exeter has confirmed that it won’t proceed with compulsory redundancies “at this time”. This means colleagues do not need to complete the pro forma, and there will be no selection process.

Students are facing the consequences too, with concerns about the availability of modules, staff and the degree experience they signed up for. Meanwhile, many staff are exhausted and experiencing the mental and physical impact of months of uncertainty.

For now though, we rest, reconvene, and gather our strength for whatever comes next. Because the Union makes us strong 🌻💗✨ Standing in solidarity together has been what has got us this far. A strong ballot is now the best option we have in order to #DefendExeterUni. Vote now, vote yes. 💪

For many, this will bring a real sense of relief, alongside understandable sadness. Hundreds of staff have already left or been affected by cuts, leaving an already depleted workforce facing the start of teaching in just a few weeks.

The UK is in its fifth heatwave. Wildfires. Drought. Record-breaking heat. Exeter University’s response? Close Geography in Cornwall and put vital climate expertise at risk. We need this expertise more than ever. #DefendExeterUni

🚨 KEY DATES FOR THE POSTAL BALLOT 🚨 Jot them down, add them to your Google calendars, write them in flames a mile high (for any Senior Management reading this, that's a joke 😇)

Senior Management have given us no other option. We want to be teaching our wonderful students in September, but we are still here to see a financial rationale for these drastic cuts. This is our opportunity. We will shut the university down. #DefendExeterUni

And not just Exeter. At least 2 History Leicester FBAs have had to leave the University to stay in the profession due to risk of redundancy, and they won't be the only ones. The much broader issue affects thousands of excellent academics across a spectrum of disciplines (including STEM ones). 1/2

Something deeply troubling & shocking is happening at Exeter University*, where a mass cull of staff is planned, even though it's in surplus. No good justifications given. @jamesgdyke.info provides the details: www.technosphere.earth/the-bonfire-... *Disclosure: I have a Visiting Fellowship here. +🧵

🚨🚨 MEMBERS MEETING TODAY AT 2PM 🚨🚨 We did it last week; we need to do it again today! Join our meeting (you will have a Teams invite in your inbox) this afternoon. This meeting is vital for getting our local industrial action mandate. The biggest weapon we have against these cuts. #DefendExeterUni

Really heartening to see lots of support over at Instagram today. 🩷 Students and alumnae are posting about their great lecturers, and @graceblakeley.substack.com just posted a video highlighting the impacts on the Southwest! 📢 We're in this together. Lets protect this great University!

Scenes from our VC’s climate conference talk ‼️ You can’t please all the people all the time. But as our senior management are learning if you lack a moral compass, make bad decisions and remain aloof and refuse to listen to the upset you cause, you certainly CAN alienate all the people all the time.

Today marks the start of the University of Exeter’s Climate Conference. But how committed is a university to climate and environmental research really, when it plans jobs cuts for its own excellent climate researchers? [2/4]
