It's not just about climate chaos. It's also about landscape chaos. The damage we do to the land's hydrology is layered on top of the damage we do to the atmosphere. Our mismanagement of land commits us to a cycle of flood and drought. We can change this, as explained here. Please read. Thanks.

We need to calm the flood-drought climate whiplash 🌦️ In the national conversation around climate resilience, Britain’s water crisis is almost always framed as two separate emergencies.  [Continued👇] Images: [1]-Cerib/Adobe Stock, [2]-Andee/Pexels/Canva

The lessons from Brazil and Serbia? Don't concede one inch of ground to the far right. Don't appease. Don't triangulate. Don't grovel. Don't say they have "legitimate concerns". Mobilise your base, and fight them with all the democratic means at your disposal.

Bolsonaro's loss is not just a loss for Bolsonaro. It's a loss for Trump. For Musk. For Milei. For Netanyahu. For Farage. For Meta and Zuckerberg. For the meat barons, the fossil fuel corporations, and the rest of the neocolonial looters. And it is a massive win for humanity and the living planet.

My political education began in Brazil, where I lived from 1989-91. I learnt that the only defence we have is "conscientizaçao": raising awareness about the relations between exploiters and exploited, and the violence that underpins them. The Brazilians have once again demonstrated its power. ✊❤️‍🔥

This is horrific. And unsurprisingly the work of a "conservative" multimillionaire. Other adjectives might include creepy, prurient, dictatorial and abusive, not to mention, of course, transphobic. Once more with feeling: we need to get the money out of politics. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...

I warned 3 years ago that mink farms are a likely route to a new and horrific human pandemic, and once more I'm fervently praying it doesn't map out that way. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

theguardian.comBe warned: the next deadly pandemic is not inevitable, but all the elements are in place | George MonbiotBird flu is a mass killer, and mink farms are perfect for infection and transmission. They are a grave threat and must be banned, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot
Kevin Uhrmacher@kevinuhrm.bsky.social

Wild new story from @natlash.bsky.social Bird flu has been raging uncontrolled on a mink farm for two months. Flu experts fear it could spark a devastating human pandemic. But officials haven’t acted, instead prioritizing the financial interests of the fur trade. www.propublica.org/article/bird...

"farming mink for their fur, a cruel and pointless practice, continues in Europe, North America and China. There’s a high chance that the next pandemic, whatever it may be, will emerge in one of these places. .... we need a global treaty to ban mink farming."

"So who is the homicidal maniac in this story? It’s a scarcely examined abstraction we call “the economy”, a monster to whom anything and everything must be sacrificed without question or resistance: farmed animals, wild ones, even, unless we are fortunate, human beings in their millions."

Muslims and immigrants, despite all the lies we're told about them, have never presented a systemic threat to Western security, let alone to "Western civilisation". Instead, the threats come from our governments, especially in the US, and their grim alliances with capital and overseas dictators.

Sure, we should, if we can (many cannot). But as I keep pointing out, the government itself is making no provision at all. No stockpiles, no back-up, no alternative sources. It's individuating the response to a collective problem, and that never ends well. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Let’s eradicate our life support systems – that’ll teach the liberals! It's not just about giving destructive industries what they want, important as this is. The likes of Trump and Bolsonaro will kill the planet out of a vengeful desire to hurt. My column. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

theguardian.comStrongmen like Trump would destroy the planet out of pure spite – and Brazil shows we’re all in peril | George MonbiotIf Flávio Bolsonaro is elected, Brazil’s ecosystems will face collapse. The ruling class would rather burn the world than share it with the poor, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

Mass deforestation and the sudden ecosystem collapse likely to result offers a finality to their politics: there’s no coming back from this. You Indigenous people, you greens, anyone stupid enough to care: you’ll have nowhere left to hide. The world will be ours, even if it is a world of ashes.

Approving the Jackdaw gas field solves none of our problems, while contributing to the existential crisis of climate breakdown. The government has privileged special interests above the general interest. It's a shameful, cowardly decision.

There is already more than enough fossil fuel being extracted to cover demand while we switch to alternatives. We should be accelerating the switch, not adding to the problem. And there is so much more the government could do, right now.

The Covid Inquiry’s Module 6 report is devastating. Its central conclusion: adult social care was treated as “something of an afterthought”, while “protecting the NHS” sometimes came at the expense of people receiving and providing care. 1/10

Among Keir Starmer's worst deeds were his legislative and rhetorical attacks on nature protection. In those two wasted years, we spiralled backwards, even from the Tory legacy. At this week's biodiversity summit, the Burnham govt should pledge to turn that round. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

theguardian.comWage war on nature to build new homes: that’s Labour’s offer, but it’s a con trick | George MonbiotThe government’s new planning bill is tearing down environmental protections to benefit developers. This nation of nature lovers won’t stand for it, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

Every time I criticised Starmer and Reeves about this, people on social media piled in, saying "what do you want, Reform to get in?" No, I just wanted what most people want: a govt we can trust, that responds to voters not corporate lobbyists, that improves our lives and protects the living world.

Whether we have such a thing, now that the living, breathing wasted opportunity called Keir Starmer has gone, remains to be seen. But at least Burnham has so far not dissed wildlife and declared war on the living world, as Starmer and Reeves did, over and again.

You may have seen reports about the campaign for charities to be more 'transparent' about who funds them. Well it turns out the mysterious new right-wing think tank behind it won't say who funds or runs them, and used fake names for the authors of the report which launched their campaign

The trade unions resisting a political donations cap in the UK are ragged-trousered philanthropists. Thanks to their delusion that a system allowing limitless donations enhances their power, they're in danger of handing the country to the far-right parties that billionaires support. Burnham must act

By and large we don't get the governments we deserve; we get the governments funders pay for. As in the US, UK politics is becoming dominated by huge spending. The result is *inevitably* to push us rightwards. The unions' position is breath-takingly blinkered. They will never win the funding race.

Burnham too is deluded on this issue. He might think he's playing nice, but he's opening the door to the nastiest elements, who *will* come to dominate if they can simply buy persuasion, in the way that Bolsonaro's backers have done in Brazil. By refusing to cap, he's signing Labour's death warrant.

“You can tell the economic character of a nation by the way its infrastructure works.” Powerful words from George Monbiot on BBC Question Time explaining how Wales’s economy was built to extract wealth rather than enrich its own people, and why we need the powers to put that right. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 #Annibyniaeth

On Question Time last night, I talked about the extractive economic model that has left Wales - and many other nations - impoverished *because they were so rich in resources*. You can see the problem simply by looking at the map: the infrastructure looks like a drainage system.

Since 1284, the wealth of Wales has been used to enrich English oligarchs, leaving Wales in poverty. And you can see the legacy today: six of the ten poorest boroughs in Britain are in South Wales - and all of them are places that generated massive wealth.
