Kids are spending longer than ever in ORR custody, and attorneys have turned to habeas petitions to get them out. Jill Williams of Acacia and Becky Wolozin of the National Center for Youth Law explained the strategy to me. https://austinkocher.substack.com/p/no-child-should-need-a-habeas-petition

"In the past, most unaccompanied minors in ORR custody were children who had recently crossed the US-Mexico border by themselves—not kids who arrived with a parent and had been living in the country for years." www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

So excited to be part of this absolutely STACKED lineup for the Boswords Fall Themeless League (with Rebecca, my Stormy Division pairs solving partner 4ever!)

We are excited to announce the constructing roster for the Boswords 2026 Fall Themeless League! The folks below are currently crafting vibrant grids for you to enjoy weekly in October and November. Registration opens on Saturday, September 5.

My new First Opinion piece in @statnews.com discusses the forthcoming birthright citizenship decision in Trump v. Barbara (and gives a little preview of one chapter of my still-being-written book about immigration and reproductive justice!) www.statnews.com/2026/06/23/b...

statnews.comEnding birthright citizenship could be a public health disasterIf the Supreme Court upholds the executive order ending birthright citizenship, it could “have stark consequences at the intersection of bioethics and public health.”

I'm so proud of our These Puzzles Fund Abortion team and the puzzles we put out and the community that rallies around the abortion funds we support! Please consider donating to support this important cause — the fundraiser ends on Sunday! fund.nnaf.org/tpfa6

✨Editor* Spotlight✨ @fabioethics.bsky.social (she/her) is a crossword constructor and a professor of bioethics. She created TPFA as a form of praxis, putting her scholarly interest in reproductive justice into practice through fundraising for abortion access. (1/2)

I've had the privilege of working alongside Seçil for the past month at the Brocher Foundation in Switzerland as she's been putting the finishing touches on this book. I have learned so much from her about syphilis in the Ottoman Empire, and the history of Ottoman medicine in general!

April Fools' pranks are getting and less and less believable. Like I'm seeing websites claiming that the government of the United States is going to argue in court today that the Fourteenth Amendment denies birthright citizenship to kids born here just because their parents didn't enter lawfully.

For those who have asked, I'm spending my sabbatical working on a book project on reproductive justice, immigration, and bioethics in the U.S. My book explores (among other things) advocacy against this long-standing and intentional pattern of inhumane treatment, abuse, and neglect. 1/5

NEW: Trump Has Detained the Parents of More Than 11,000 U.S. Citizen Kids A ProPublica analysis of new ICE data shows that Trump has detained parents of U.S. citizen children at about twice the rate that Biden did, and moms have been deported four times as often.

One chapter of my book examines the implications of ending birthright citizenship (SCOTUS oral args in Trump v. Barbara set for 4/1/26) for policies that support undocumented pregnant people. What would it mean for these advocacy coalitions if the fetus is no longer a future citizen? 3/5

And what does it tell us that unlikely allies can agree that incarcerating and neglecting pregnant people is wrong, but disagree when the person in question is a non-pregnant parent? Or a minor? Or a single adult without kids? 4/5

absolutely terrifying but not unexpected given the recent DHS proposed rule to expand collection and storage of biometric data.

People arrested while protesting ICE say federal agents took samples of their DNA. It's legal, but experts say the practice raises questions about what the government is doing with that genetic data. n.pr/4lyzEDy
