"A push to reopen the door to commercial whaling failed at the recent meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) [...] leaving the IWC’s 40-year-old global moratorium on commercial whaling intact." 🥳

Higher wild boar abundance = more crop damage. But is more culling the answer? In Xishuangbanna, China, higher wild boar abundance was also linked to higher vertebrate richness, positive associations, and stable co-occurrence networks. Conflict-driven culling may have unintended ecological costs.

"Looking beyond hunted species to their habitats, hunting predominantly increased the extent of land conserved. We now need to understand the ecological integrity of these landscapes."

🚨Preprint alert! 🚨What if your study animal doesn't know the landscape yet? Standard movement models such as SSA assume it does. In our new study we let it learn instead, and put "learner" against "omniscient" head to head (1/4) doi.org/10.64898/202...

Subsidiary Q: Do some preprints out there eventually never get accepted and published in a PR journal? I would think so, and if so, what's the point beyond cluttering science?

Honest Q Has any1 evr got a preprint eventually published as is? I mean,as flawed as peer-review might be,I'm expecting substantial changes btwn the submitted v of a MS & its final published v,if not (desk)rejected 2 start with Askin 4 a frnd who nvr got the concept of preprints that stay up 4ever

The deadliest myth regarding the pangolin is the persistent, unscientific belief in the healing powers of its carapace. Despite the keratin scales having the same remedial properties as human nails, traditional Chinese homeopathic medicine underpins the robust demand for illegal pangolin body parts.

Most of the statistical tests you learned in stats class — t-test, ANOVA, correlation — are actually special cases of a single thing: linear regression. Ch 7 of Experimentology argues that thinking in models, not tests, is more flexible and a better foundation for theory. 🧵 experimentology.io
