in Taiwan, at least back in 2019, a very common password revealed in Have I Been Pwned data breach reports is ji32k7au4a83 "that seems secure," you might think but it turns out that in the Zhuyin keyboard for inputting Mandarin, this series of keystrokes yields ζˆ‘ηš„ε―†η’Ό (wΗ’ de mΓ¬mǎ, "my password")

Wrote down a few thoughts about the direction I see website emissions estimation heading over the next 18 months, and some of the models and tools that I know of which are shaping that. These are my reckons, you've probably got yours. Would love to hear them! fershad.com/writing/webs...

🌿 One question we often hear around the Web Sustainability Guidelines (WSG): what measures will have most impact? A new document, published at W3C today, has impact ratings for each of the success criteria in the WSG: www.w3.org/TR/wsg-ir/

Choosing sustainable hosting infrastructure relies on understanding who's taking energy decarbonisation steps & in which regions. Here's one way @mrchrisadams.net & I hope can represent this nuance, so consumers can make informed decisions on their tech suppliers. fershad.com/writing/deca...

fershad.comA repeatable way for showing how hosting providers are making progress decarbonising the energy they use - Fershad IraniAn idea about categorising the energy used by hosting infrastructure which shows progress, is repeatable, and incentivises meaningful decarbonisation.

@fastmail.com launching EU hosting for their email service shortly after I worked through the rest of my tech stack is very nice timing. Been using them for years, now I've switched my data region to the EU. fershad.com/writing/euro...

fershad.comTrying out an EU-based stack for this website - Fershad IraniAs a bit of a side quest for work, I've been digging into the idea of a tech stack that's divorced from US big tech companies, with content and data being hosted on European-based infrastructure.

Fastmail data can now live primarily in the EU, on servers our own engineers set up in Amsterdam. Current customers can switch in settings; new accounts pick a region at signup.

Our CEO Bron's post walks through exactly what lives where.

Doing some research for some upcoming projects. One requirement is the services/platforms used are not tied US big tech, and ideally are EU based. Anyone have pointers to server-side hosting (SSR sites, API endpoints), email marketing providers, or domain name registrars that might fit the bill?

Friends, I'll be in Japan for a few days in May and June. I'd love meet with members of the tech community working on: - Japan's energy transition - The sustainability reporting landscape - How Japan is thinking about data center growth and AI If that's you, or someone you know, get in touch!

Amazing work from my Green Web Foundation colleagues. ⚑ State of the Fossil-Free Internet ⚑ The report casts light on the opaqueness of climate disclosures made by the internet's largest players, while highlighting three pathways for an internet that serves everyone. fossilfree.greenweb.org/2026/

This is my favorite climate change chart. Japanese monks, aristocrats, and emperors kept meticulous records of cherry blossom festivals for 1,200 years and accidentally built the world's longest climate dataset.

In 2022, I released a little project called "Are my third parties green?" so people can check the sustainability of third parties on the web. Nearly 5000 web page checks later it's time for an update! It's still in beta, but you can give it a look over at amtpg.run (amtpg.run)

DAY TWO OF ME ENDLESSLY PROMOTING SOMETHING I'M PROUD OF Here's a new video summary, focusing on the flimsy evidence behind the claim AI tech will make global emissions plummet by gigatonnes and how similar that is to something you might recognise..... ketanjoshi.co/2026/02/17/b...

OKAY BIG ONE FOR YA NEW report out today: I dig deep into how big tech has been muddling tech types and overstating evidence to claim "AI" will make global emissions drop like a stone.... Not only will it not, it seems to be verifiably doing the opposite!! ketanjoshi.co/2026/02/17/b... + πŸ“Ό+🧡>
