So my thing about this is, from my experience in rationalist spaces I recognise the type of person you're talking about. But, I thought Scott Siskind was one of them and it turns out he was always a fascist masking his power level to recruit better - which makes me question my judgement of the type

I think something that isn't at all the main point of any of this but that is being surfaced by the "what exactly is bad about EA/TPOT/rationalists" and at least some of the pushback from those of us who do in fact dislike all the people who've caused the pushback is...ugh can't fit this in one post

Oh look, the congestion charge is doing exactly what it's supposed to!

Buses on Oxford’s main arterial roads are 12% faster in the morning rush hour, following the introduction of the congestion charge, than this time last year. Oxfordshire County Council has released data from the first month of the charge, which suggests traffic has fallen but footfall is holding up.

Doubt it'll do much good, but I've written to my nonentity of an MP asking her to stand up against the Nazi-adjacent policies coming out of the Home Office. Expressed that Labour is crossing moral boundaries which will make it very difficult for a lot of people to vote for them again.

It's time to update some stereotypes for the modern age: Americans have bad teeth. TV personalities and politicians (but I repeat myself) spend US$big money$ hiding this basic reality.

I've had to break it to a less online friend that 2 of the 5 main UK parties want to abolish/massively restrict ILR, while Labour merely want to double the eligibility period. She has ILR.

@stephenkb.bsky.social how many voters do you think have a numerical idea of how many immigrants they "want"? Most voters want "less" migration but still want all the benefits of migration, which is a level of imprecision that doesn't translate well into numbers

My most 'identity politics' take is that no-one without lived experience of running a discussion forum online should be allowed to write opinion pieces about online free speech.

It's fun when 'adults' throw tantrums about children existing in public. No, wait, it's the other one. You were a kid once yourself, have a little grace.

Not my closest, but tight with friends of mine; we lost one to meningitis and one run down by a car on his bike within a few months of each other.

Quote-skeet and tell me about a friend of yours who died too soon. I want to remember them with you.

Linguistics meets nature. Polish has a special word for orange-red: RUDY. We use it to describe kania ruda (red kite), rudy lis (fox), rudy rydz (red pine mushroom), rudzik (robin), and folks with red hair. It's distinct from orange (pomarańczowy) and red (czerwony), perhaps closest to russet. 🧪🦊🪶🌏

8am: publish article saying that support for women’s rights is a fundamental value. 11am:

Badenoch on Times Radio now saying she thinks maternity pay is bad and she wants to get rid of it. That will go down like a lump of lead. Also she's equally tetchy in this interview as earlier. Bit of a disaster today for her.

You are up to date.
