Have some more respect for the office of President of the United States, please! We always knew that any mentally competent white man could become President. In 2008 we learned that any mentally competent man could become President. In 2016 we learned that any man could become President. Progress!

Web developer lazyweb - HELLLLLPPP!!!! Picture if you will. You are at the website for wossnames dot com. You wish to buy a new wossname. You go through all the usual rigmarole of searching, adding to cart, signing in, filling out your shipping details, etc. The final step is payment. [1/5]

I'm building a payment gateway from scratch, for Reasons, and I have the credit card side of things working: create object, assign products, generate URL, redirect browser to URL". Lovely. I want the same thing with PayPal, but a week of googling and trying examples has given me nothing. [4/5]

IF YOU KNOW THE ANSWER, please let me know. If you at least know the correct terminology (is it an order, a payment, a transaction, a vault, or something else?) please give me some clues. If you figure you can ask ChatGPT and tell me what it says... please sit this one out. Anyone? [5/5]

You wish to pay using PayPal (yes, I know, work with me here). You click a button marked "PayPal" and the process of payment begins: popups, passwords or passkeys, etc etc etc. Payment happens, shipment happens, wossname is delivered, everyone cheers. [2/5]

My question is: how does that button marked PayPal get created? How does it know to take your money and put it into the seller's PayPal account? How does it know the correct amount? How does it have a description of the exact wossnames you're buying so it can confirm the purchase? [3/5]

Currently helping an elderly family friend figure out if an email is a scam (which it obviously is) and hey, people who make mobile email apps, it's a dark pattern to not make the email address of the sender visible without needing to click on the little arrow thing. Just thought you should know.

Supposing you had the ability to teleport yourself and anybody else to any location instantly, how many ICE operatives would need to be dropped into an Indonesian volcano before the USA became minimally civilised? Ten? A hundred? Every last fucking one of them?

Ugh. Well, thank the gods that's over. I don't get the praise I'm seeing for that episode: it was a poorly-acted plotless sequence of cliches all wrapped up with the biggest Star Trek cliche of all, the omnipotent glowing super-aliens.

I just want to know: if they don't have fully functional replicator tech in the 23rd century, where did they get so many Idiot Balls for ALL the characters to hold simultaneously?

⏩ atmosphere is already annoying me, even before we find out that the moon's orbit takes it into the atmosphere of its primary, which has so many things wrong with it that I may weep. Never mind. Grit teeth. If I can't manage it, I'll read the plot synopsis and skip to the next episode.

The lawyers of BlueSky seem to know something we don't, and have applied age verification only to the Chat function of the app, not the whole thing. I'm 90% certain they've misunderstood the "law" on the Australian "ban" on "social media", but meh, whatever. Don't try to chat me; I refuse to verify.

Fun fact: BSky does in fact have auto content moderation. I suggested that the way to deal with the US situation is to target NewsCorp management, not just politicians. I used the expression "Be the [name of Mario's brother] you want to see in the world." It was INSTANTLY taken down, at AI speeds.

I know y'all will accuse me of lying or hallucinating, but I saw it with my own eyes: I selected "Install updates and shut down" just now, and my Win11 PC installed updates and then... IT SHUT DOWN! By itself! It didn't restart and sit there waiting to log me in! Truly, this is the age of wonders.

Currently, when a government does something stupid, like our government green-lighting yet another environment-raping business venture, our only recourse is protest. This is because we don't have assassinations any more. Governments should be grateful for this change, and act appropriately.

Scott Adams, the defective personality behind the laugh-a-decade cartoon Dilbert, has the same cancer as Joe Biden. The difference is that it will be sad when Biden dies.

It's only the second time Adams and Biden have had anything at all in common. The first time was when Biden spent his entire life never drawing a remotely amusing comic.

Just had to unfollow the beloved @georgetakei.bsky.social, legend of SFTV, the closest thing the US has to Stephen Fry, because I realised I don't need to see every single news post from the weirdly rabid pro-Democrat "news" site Comic Sands. Sadly, Bluesky doesn't support muting by linked URL.

Election results around the world since 20 Jan 2025. 🟨 is liberal/progressive/left-wing, ⚪ is conservative/right-wing. 🔺is a Russian-influenced mess beyond comprehension. ⚪ 26 Feb: Belarus (rigged election) 🟨 7 Feb: Turks and Caicos Islands 🟨 9 Feb: Kosovo ⚪ 9 Feb: Liechtenstein 🟨 18 Feb: Bermuda

Notes: Greenland is an interesting case. Trump has definitely sunk the nascent independence movement there. Romania might just deserve a 🔺 for the Russian meddling. Current front-runner (not current leader -- that was a typo) is a real piece of work. Watch closely, but with not much optimism.

Also, am I reading too much into the list of Romanian candidates, or did one of them literally give himself the slogan "This Is The Way"? Does Romania want a Star Wars fanboy in charge? Honestly, it would probably be an improvement...

Now what I want to see is a simple table, as follows: Column 1 and 2: the date and location of every national election starting 20 January 2025. Column 3: an icon indicating if the pre-election government is conservative, liberal/centrist, or progressive. Column 4: same icon, post-election

I guess it's lucky that Pope Leo is "woke". It saves the "Christians" of the US from having to temporarily pretend they think Catholics are Christians too.

@stilgherrian.com Your old mate Soapy the Ankle showed up on a clip I was watching, and it occurred to me that his nickname scans to "Frosty the Snowman". I was thus inspired to write a song about him, but to avoid litigation I thought I'd fill it with obvious lies. You can't sue for fiction! >>

Soapy the Ankle Soapy the Ankle Was a nasty piece of work He assaulted several journalists Then he murdered Tony Bourke. Back in the sixties, He was friends with Harold Holt He gave him swimming lessons, and Well, you know the end result. ... Shall I go on, or are the lawyers already looming?

We named a swimming pool and a submarine monitoring station after Harold Holt. What are we naming after Dutton? I propose: a unisex toilet block, a housing program for recent immigrants, or a Royal Commission into police brutality and corruption.

Feel free to add Australia's federal election to the list of those influenced by Trump. In December, the big question was which prime ministerial residence the conservative opposition leader would live in. Tonight, that same leader lost his seat. I vote for that to happen EVERYWHERE.

Decided to watch a whole episode of SNL, which I've never done before. It was astonishing. To think, they're all aware of what they did. How is the suicide rate from depression not a hundred times higher among the cast? I can't explain it.

I want to see a SF story in which every single person with a "minority" identity -- LGBTQIA+, neurodivergent, disabled, etc -- has a superpower. Like, all lesbians can fly, all autistic people can teleport, all the different First Nations have a specific superpower common just to their nation, ⏩

Rick Riordan@rickriordan.bsky.social

Every time I see a 'visibility day' being commemorated, I confess I misread it as 'invisibility day' and for a split-second I get disappointed because although I totally support visibility days, I would also support giving underrepresented groups super powers for a day. That would be cool!

and so on -- and the unpowered cishet white majority have to twist logic ever tighter to maintain the belief that they're still superior. Maybe superpowers make you less "human". Part of the allegory would address the idea that some people are already assumed to have "powers" in the real world ⏩

-- autistic people are good at maths, gay guys have impeccable dress sense, African American men are well-endowed, and so on -- and that's not 100% a good thing. POV character is an autistic black trans woman who is discovered to have no powers at all, meaning she's as "special" as white folks... ⏹️

I hear that not ALL transphobes are gagging for the new Harry Potter remake. Apparently, they cast a black guy as Snape, so now the racist transphobes are out. That doesn't leave many still in favour!

I'm sure the goblins will still be 19th-century-style Jewish caricatures and the one POC in the entire school will still be named "Ching Chong" or whatever it was, so not ALL the racists will be unhappy. Still, it's a start, right?

So did the Insurrection Act/Martial Law thing happen? And if not, are the people pushing the scary story now back-pedalling, or have they just gone to ground?

If anyone has the ear of any sitting member of the Democratic Party in the US, can you pass this on? Tell them to start announcing NOW that when they eventually hold power again, they will prosecute EVERYBODY who is involved in this government's crimes - NO exceptions. It could be a vote winner!

Wait - are you telling me that there is NOBODY in the entire USA who is suicidally depressed enough to give up their life to assassinate the President? How is that even possible?

I need a sanity check. This April 20/Hitler's Birthday/Insurrection Act thing - is it a crackpot conspiracy theory or a real possibility?

It's good to have definitions for words. For example, the definition for the word "stupid" is "any Australian who isn't fabulously wealthy but still votes for the Liberal Party". It's not stupid for wealthy people to vote Lib, but it is still selfish.

For all my trans-anything friends on this International Transgender Day of Visibility: I hope your eyesight is excellent or your lenses are clean and unscratched. I hope your ambient illumination is optimal. Furthermore, I hope you are exactly as visible TO OTHER PEOPLE as you want and need to be.
