Absolutely stoked to be among the 2026 winners of the BC-Yukon Book Prize. “This Book Is A Knife,” my second non-fiction work, took home the Jim Deva Award for Writing That Provokes. It focuses on a single thesis—that capitalism is the root of climate crisis. Read more 👇

One of the weird things about the Yukon is you get to the airport for the early flight on Saturday morning and you see all the same people you saw last night at the bar and you can tell exactly who made the choice to go home early and exactly who decided to “stay and check out the DJ.”

Driving myself to the airport this morning to catch a flight to the Vancouver Writers Festival to talk about This Book Is A Knife, my queer, working class, anti-capitalist climate crisis book, and listening to Danielle Smith talk about how kids “are being transgendered behind their parents backs.”

Queer books. When I was coming out in the aughts, you would go to a queer bookstore and it would be, by and large, just… bad. Bad writing, bad print quality, bad covers. Now, queer books—and queer characters—just… happen? I can read an amazing novel, and we’re just part of the novel, not a prop.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

I think it's odd to live in a time where we're just past the peak of everything. In less then two decades, billionaires have stripped all progress, turned to warmongering, and ensured we will all suffer for their pissing contest. That said, luggage wheels are great.

THANK YOU, yes THIS

Hey, just a humble, respectful request. For the love of fucking god, stop fucking attacking Donald Trump with blatant and repulsive homophobia. If you think going after fascists by calling them gay or producing AI slop of them in dresses or making out, you're part of the fucking problem.

Costco often changes the floor plan to keep the animals engaged as they search for their next free food samples.

I had top surgery the spring of 2023. I went on T the spring of 2024. These decisions were some of the best decisions I’ve ever made for myself. If you want to transition, and you can transition, you should probably transition. Just a message for anyone who needs to hear that.

Cutting off both my parents & never, ever speaking to them again is, absolutely, w/o the shadow of a doubt, one of the best choices I ever made for myself. The covenant btw parents & children is two ways: unlimited love, care, & protection. If they didn’t pay their end, you don’t owe them yours.

Being 40 is so weird. In some ways I’m in the best shape of my life—run 8K up a steep mountain pass? No prob. Hike 23 K round trip? Cool. Lift a bunch of heavy shit into a truck? No biggie. But two weeks ago I sneezed wrong and pulled a muscle and I’m someone still paying for it? WTF man?

I watched Florida taken apart by corrupt rightwing governors who destroyed so much. Oregon might not be perfect, but it has a functional government that has preserved many human rights other states have lost. Please don't take that for granted-- reelect Kotek as governor. Hold fast.

Okay for fucking real did Annie Jacobsen write this? Are we being punked?

Things I did this weekend: -closed down, cleaned up, and processed the last of the garden -deep-cleaned and rearranged my home office -purchased a new stand-up freezer, inventoried frozen goods (I fish, forage, and garden, ergo food storage important) -cleaned and organized kitchen cupboards

For the record, I had the same deeply visceral reaction to this as I do seeing someone in like… Looney Toons PJ bottoms in public. Like tell me you’ve given up so hard your friends should and/or presently are organizing an intervention without telling me that out loud.

Behold: a “hot take” that is actually a goddamn science fact. What a lot of people who aren’t actually non monogamous believe non monogamy to mean is “I fuck around so long as the cis man in the relationship is cool with it and also he can do whatever he wants and queer people are side pieces.”

okay actually hot take: people are monogamous or not and “trying” non-monogamy isn’t real + people who do that end up having a huge blast radius that hurts a lot of non-monogamous people
