Your monthly reminder that if you're using ChatGPT to do your science, you're failing your colleagues, community, and all of us. Here, ChatGPT makes up data and presents it as the real thing — then apologizes when confronted.

I rarely advertise my business. I've been fortunate to receive most of my work through referrals. But I do currently have space for a short-term project! If you need help setting up data collection systems, wrangling a dataset for analysis, or documenting data for sharing, reach out! cghlewis.com

New preprint on aging and implicit associative memory. Spoiler alert 🚨 - older adults can bind (no, I don't plan to stop repeating this...maybe when people start listening 😂) #PsychSciSky #Neuroskyence

I’m excited to share a new preprint on implicit associative memory in aging with @woodforbrains.bsky.social @rosannaolsen.bsky.social and @karampbell.bsky.social As we age, it becomes harder to remember associations - often linked to hippocampal changes...

The first paper from my PhD is out in Nature Neuroscience! Aging and Alzheimer's disease reshape how the brain communicates. But not in the same way: aging vs AD related alterations follow two distinct axes of brain organization Paper → www.nature.com/articles/s41... #Alzheimers #Neuroimaging 🧵⬇️

Enterprise software companies had a short-lived run where they competed on usability and product-led growth which seems to be over. Now every SaaS app seems to be converging on the same UX monstrosity, complete with AI features of dubious value.

If @science.org is covering it, I guess I should share something here- we have for the first time definitively detected radio emission from a planet around another star! 🔭🧪🎢 What does this mean? Details in thread! (But TL;DR- still not aliens) 🧵 www.sciencenews.org/article/exop...

Many struggle with writing alt text for charts and other other data visualizations. Amy Cesal's "Writing Alt Text for Data Visualization" hammers home the importance of explaining the chart type, the type of data, and the reason for the chart. medium.com/nightingale/...

📝 New article on Our World in Data: A never-ending childhood of malaria. Read accounts from those who have had a severe case of malaria, and many will describe it as one of the worst experiences of their life.

One thing I want to get better at is sharing the dataset I put together when working on my data stories. If 8 weeks of Apple Podcasts charts sounds useful to you, you can check out the dataset here: www.kaggle.com/datasets/fra... #DataAnalysis

A while back, I looked at how the top 20 podcasts in Science on Apple Podcasts change each week, which made me wonder which category changed the most. It turns out the top 25 podcasts in Comedy and News are the most stable, while True Crime and Society & Culture are the least stable.

P.S. I am looking for a better place to share my datasets besides Kaggle, since it tends to skew toward ML/AI datasets, which doesn't apply to most of mine. I'm open to suggestions, especially if you also post datasets.

I sound like a broken record, but if you can only do one sanity check before sharing your data, let it be this. Check your rows. 1. Do you have the correct number of cases? 2. Are any cases duplicated or missing? 3. Are the unique identifiers valid? Thank you for your time. 🙏

When sharing data, does anyone package their dataset with an actual validation script? Something that a computer can run to confirm that column level attributes are met? So beyond a data dictionary, something like a JSON Schema or maybe a YAML file with validation code?
