More than 80 percent of Americans view Russian President Vladimir Putin unfavorably, and only 4 percent favor Russia in the war in Ukraine. As columnist @fridaghitis.bsky.social writes, that makes President Donald Trump’s turn toward Moscow a political liability at home.

wpr.pubTrump’s Appeasement of Putin Is Bound to BackfireU.S. voters are likely to punish, not reward, Trump’s pro-Russia moves when they cast their ballots in upcoming midterm elections.

Worrisome news

US officials say they see the highest threat level from Iran since the start of Trump and Netanyahu's war. They say intel shows Iran is in the "advanced stages" of planning to attack US officials — not only in the Middle East, but in Europe and the US too. Gift link: www.nytimes.com/2026/10/23/u...

Trump betrayed Ukrainians and Americans: "The pivot toward Putin has occurred with dizzying speed, and it’s particularly shocking not only because of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and support for Iran in killing US troops, but because most Americans view Russia as an enemy"

How far are they going to go to try to keep voters -- especially Hispanics -- from going to the polls?

🚨BREAKING: A top federal prosecutor in Texas began the first day of early voting with a stark message to voters: “If you violate federal election law, I will hunt you down and prosecute you. Election Day is Tuesday, November 3. We’ll see you out at the polls.” www.democracydocket.com/news-alerts/...

It's as if the protesters in France were trying to help the far right win the elections. Riots, looting, arson.

Wars on both sides of the Red Sea, from Yemen and Somalia to Ethiopia and Sudan, are drawing in rival regional and global backers. As senior columnist @fridaghitis.bsky.social writes, that makes the vital waterway the place where “an out-of-control wildfire could erupt.”

wpr.pubThe Red Sea Is the New Epicenter of Conflict in the Midde EastThe Strait of Hormuz will continue to be an important chokepoint, but the real danger for the region has moved west.

The most unethical experiment, a vaccine trial playing lottery with children’s lives. Some get the vaccine. Some don’t.

Rachel Fairbank@sweetsciencewriter.bsky.social

“The children who are randomly selected not to receive the birth dose of the vaccine, those who “lost the lottery”, face in their earliest days the risk of contracting hepatitis B, which can cause irreversible lifelong damage.” No words. I am speechless. This violates all ethical boundaries.

Obviously I meant Flavio Bolsonaro. He's the candidate, and the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, currently imprisoned for trying to steal the last election. Apologies

"An Israeli official told CNN that one of the questions in the investigation is how an Omani pilot, a citizen of a country that does not have diplomatic relations with Israel, was allowed to join the crew. That...has the potential to uncover an operation larger than the actions of one man..."

Private dwellings targeted by drones; family members injured or killed. A school hit. Just a regular day (and night) in Ukraine. Russia killing civilians, not accidentally but deliberately, as a policy. But terror bombing didn’t work during WWII. It won’t make Ukrainians stop defending themselves.

Russia continues its terror against Ukrainian civilians. Russian drones targeted Kyiv and Kyiv region throughout the day yesterday and into the night, with attacks continuing today. A man was killed in Kyiv. A woman&two 16-year-old children were injured. 📹A Russian drone struck a school in Kyiv.

Russia said exactly the same about Ukraine in 2014 - just before sending infantry, tank, airborne and air defence units into Ukraine's Donbas in August 2014. Russia said the same thing again about Ukraine in January 2022 - just before attempting the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Lavrov said Russia does not intend to fight Europe, but accused Europe of preparing for war with Russia by investing heavily in weapons production. He warned this could become a “self-fulfilling prophecy” and said Russia would respond if Europe attacked. #Europe

At the U.N. this week, Donald Trump raised the prospect of annihilating Iran’s Islamic Republic, denied U.S. munitions shortages and dismissed global warming and AI in one sentence. None of it shocks the way it once would have, @fridaghitis.bsky.social writes.

wpr.pubTrump’s Bluster Isn’t Landing Like It Used toThe president’s rhetorical extremes once alarmed global leaders. But his latest U.N. speech showed how their shock value has diminished.

Unlike Trump’s tinkering with maps, this change will have a real impact

World Politics Review@wpr.bsky.social

The U.N. General Assembly voted 164 to 1 on Sept. 4 to urge member states to drop the centuries-old Mercator projection in favor of the Equal Earth map, which shows the relative sizes of countries far more accurately, @fridaghitis.bsky.social writes.
