“But isn’t a Russian victory inevitable in the long run? It is so much larger than Ukraine.” Look at this graph. (The dark green represents territory captured by Russia.)

Russia’s war on Ukraine is not going well. Russia is basically fighting for nothing

Russia is such a caring champion of the Global South that it offers Africa’s poorest the chance to die for its own expansionist ambitions in Europe. “Anti-imperialist” imperialism FTW.

MAKS 26 👀🇺🇦@maks23.bsky.social

🌍 Russia is expanding military recruitment in some of Africa’s poorest countries to offset heavy losses and manpower shortages in Ukraine, - Bloomberg Recruitment surged in Burundi (699 recruits) and Zimbabwe (530), with increases also reported in Sierra Leone, Sudan, Cameroon and DR Congo.

So in a huge surprise to absolutely no one, it turns out that NIH director Jay Bhattacharya's new journal based on the premise of letting his friends and only his friends publish essentially whatever they want is full of crackpot nonsense from retired cranks.

Did you, like me, miss this tiny little story on Friday? The Trump administration got the US-sanctioned Russian energy giant Novatek to secretly set up a major natural gas drilling project in Alaska. When the management of the U.S. company realized it was a front for Russian investors, they quit.

The NYT must cover their a$$es against possible lawsuits, but seriously?: “There is no indication that Mr. Witkoff and Mr. Kushner were aware of Polar LNG or its ties to Novatek, even as the broad outlines of the deal came up in their talks with Mr. Putin beginning last year.”

Many International Relations theories assume that leaders act in their nation’s interest & that national resources are sources of national power. But what if your leaders instead see your national/natural resources merely as stuff to sell off to hostile powers for personal gain?

Trump's deal will be that he returns Alaska to Russia in exchange for letting me keep the occupied parts of Ukraine.

Of course: “Putin discussed the plan last month with President Trump’s peace envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner”. As is common in these cases, the United Arab Emirates laundered the Russian money by setting up a front company. (Jared’s shady UAE-ties were exposed in another story this week.)

Any other administration—Republican or Democrat—in modern American history would have fallen instantly if something like this came out. But we’re just overwhelmed by the scale & sheer number of corrupt and perhaps even treasonous acts by members of the Trump administration, so this barely registers.

Now hysterical people will start yelling ”Ooh, Nazis!” just because Alternative für Deutschland party members were caught sending emails with… umm… “Sieg Heil Swastica cristmas cards” and wishes that immigrants be… ahem… “turned into handbags” to fellow party memb… Ok, they’re Nazis.

Witkoff salutes Putin the “humanitarian.”

The Tennessee Holler @thetnholler.bsky.social

WITKOFF TO PUTIN (yes, that Putin): “You talk so much about Trump being a humanitarian — you are a humanitarian also, sir. I salute that. I commend you.” 🤯 we are so cooked. Russia was never a hoax.

A few hours after the meeting in Moscow where the U.S. envoy called Putin a “humanitarian,” Russia drops CLUSTER BOMBS on the capital of a democratic European country.

Alina Pereverzieva 🇺🇦@perevaa.bsky.social

Russia struck Kyiv’s historic center overnight with an Iskander ballistic missile carrying a K5 cluster warhead. Its 58 submunitions explode in midair across a 400×400m area. A nice addition to the humanitarian aid package – ensuring that as many people as possible receive their share ✨

When the AfD's Alice Weidel confidently asserts that Ukraine CANNOT defeat Russia because it is smaller, it betrays a pro-Russian ideological assumption, not a realistic assessment of the war. The fact that the Ukrainian population is suffering doesn't mean that the war is going well for Russia.

Not surprisingly, Russian propaganda is already using this clip of AfD leader Alice Weidel as proof that Ukraine has already lost the war against Russia. 🤪 📹 The Economist

In the same interview, she also argues that it is “stupid” and “a huge provocation” for Ukraine to … umm … defend itself against Russia. I honestly don’t even know what to say, except maybe don’t watch if you have a high blood pressure.

Weidel: "Prolonging the war and shooting drones into the hinterland of Russia, destroying refineries, houses, and buildings near Moscow, is a huge provocation." Host: "It's defending itself." Weidel: "No, it's not." Host: "Every night, drones and ballistic missiles rain down on Ukraine..."

Russia attempted a major offensive to break Ukraine's defensive line in Donetsk this year. Ukraine defeated it. Europe's increased support enabled this success. Imagine what Ukraine could accomplish if the US returned to pre-Trump levels of support.

Trump-Musk Starshield restrictions have hampered Ukrainian drone strikes (and the absence of intel sharing may have led to unnecessary Ukrainian civilian deaths), but the Ukrainian counteroffensives are effective. Over 40,000 Russian soldiers have been killed or wounded since the summer.

Here is another of the children at the park who were just slaughtered in Ukraine. Meanwhile, Trump is planning to help Russia with $5-7 billion. Call your senator.

On October 9, according to the WSJ, Putin proposed in a phone call with Trump a November summit with him and Xi Jinping to end the war in Ukraine on terms favorable to Moscow. The same day, a US-russia diesel agreement was reached.

We started grass fires during at least one exercise back when I did my compulsory military service. In our case, I think that it was tracer ammunition that set it off. Unfortunately, these things happen so there need not have been any foul play involved. May the soldiers RIP.

An interesting and well reasoned rejoinder to the kinds of arguments I and others have made about a Transatlantic rupture. I think that it vastly underestimates the global shift that Trump 2 has initiated, with US allies realizing that their deep interdependence with the US is an unacceptable risk.

I don’t think NATO members will leave, and military-to-military work in the alliance continues, but NATO is a political project. Ultimately, if the leader of the alliance doesn’t want to live up to the mutual defense obligation, it is a house of cards that stands only as long as it’s not tested.

Many European policymakers & diplomats used to dismiss Macron’s talk about strategic autonomy as cover for French protectionism. Now everyone understands that it is a necessity. Given the level of interdependence, it will take time, but the direction of movement is clear.

One illustration of the historical shift is the creation of the Makkah Alliance for Defence; a new defense alliance in the Middle East that is a function of an unreliable & unpredictable America that has shown itself to be incapable or unwilling to protect its partners in the region.

The US Defence Sec seemed to smirk when asked “Are you Putin’s puppet?” by a SkyNews reporter. Pete Hegseth, thought to have advised Trump to stop Starshield for Ukraine, also refused to answer when accused of being played “like a fiddle” by Putin.

This is a fair point. I guess I’m just happy that someone is asking tough questions of this American administration.
