Saw a quote from one of the designers talking about how they’d spent months on liquid glass to make apps feel “fluid and organic” My dude, I would settle for apps that work properly! Shiny ui isn’t preventing apps feeling “fluid and organic”, it’s that most have all perf and speed of wet cement.

Apples design team has a great opportunity to pull a late-season April Fools trick with this new “liquid glass” UX. Any minute now…

“What’s wrong honey, you’ve hardly touched the 15th new ai code editor I made you! What’s wrong honey, you’ve hardly touched your agentic credits honey! The ai code editor honey! Think of the productivity! Why don’t you use my ai code editor honey!”

I’m going to put seaORM in the bin. What is the point of an ORM, if every single interaction takes more code, is less expressive, and offers fewer guarantees than the straight-sql library it builds on (Sqlx).

AWS Cloudwatch metrics is such a deficient and clunky experience I’m somewhat surprised they even bother with it as a product.

Can someone explain the new Trait upcasting in Rust to me please? I’m too dense to get it from reading the release notes, but there seems to be quite a lot of excitement around it.

Rust docs: “there’s a lot of things, but here’s exactly what this function accepts, and I’ve linked everything for you!” Python docs: “it accepts an object. Bitch. What’s not clear about that?”

We had a game where this happened, it was called “BioShock”. I encourage anyone who thinks this a good idea to go play it and see how it turned out for everyone.

Balaji Srinivasan suggests giving Elon Musk “control of a huge swath of land surrounding Starbase, Texas” & designate that land as “a military base or … similar, so that [Musk] can fence it off & determine at his sole discretion who can enter.” Then replicate in other states w/ other Tech Bros. 1/

Oh look: > Regardless of the subject, it seems that the Red Hat corporate culture had finally finished the transition from the free-spirited campus-based life in the days of yore to an insane ultra-woke brainwashing hell-hole. Didn’t even get to 5 comments before we went wildly off the rails!

I just read this, and I cannot agree more! > would give my kingdom for an engineering culture in which people figured out how to build good primitives and protocols 🔥🔥 100% yes. It also links Frank McSherry’s COST paper, which might be my fav paper.

Q: How are you sure this solves real problems? "We'll ask customers": - boring - requires talking to people (scary) - less time to do mushrooms "It came to me in a vision": - ✨️✨️✨️ - more believable than whatever Sam Altman is pedalling this week - precognition helps anticipate shareholder whims

There are few kinds of tension like watching a Terraform Apply run and having “Still Modifying….” slowly tick by, unsure of whether it’s just AWS taking a while, or something has gone silently wrong.

Just found that @kagi.com can automatically provide associated HackerNews and Reddit on search results. I’ve always wanted something like that. This is so, so handy.

I love the wireless shifters on my bike, I absolutely wouldn’t go back to cables, but I’d be lying if I didn’t occasionally get annoyed because I want to go for a ride and I’ve forgotten to charge them up.

Hope you’re all excited to use software where you get ~~“subtle content prioritisation”~~ “fucking gaslit” by a wobbly machine consuming more energy than a small country.

For now, real-time personalization means subtle content prioritization, dynamic caching strategies, or preloading relevant data based on user intent. It doesn’t have to be an erratic, ever-changing UI nightmare. But yeah, if done poorly, it could absolutely be a disaster.

I’m really, really interested in running and improving some of these LLM well-poisoning/tarpit-ing applications. Anyone know if work/ideas/development on these are being discussed anywhere and how to contribute?

I really, actively resent LinkedIn’s very existence. I dislike that having is occasionally useful. I dislike that it’s filled to the brim with actual garbage. I dislike that I disable all emails from it, hardly a week goes by and “<random recruiter/person> is awaiting your response”

God Melbourne airport is a shit show. Did you people plan this thing by trying to decide the worlds-worst-possible layout and road-routing?

It’s kind of amazing how humanity collectively built the most comprehensive and accessible information repository of all time, and then a handful of people decided to let loose a bunch of broken robots to stochastically pollute it for no clear reason whatsoever

Call me when more than 1 or 2 MP’s can functionally demonstrate an actual understanding“homomorphic encryption” and “differential privacy”. The photos already leave my device to get backed up This is such a technical non-issue.

Senator David Shoebridge@davidshoebridge.bsky.social

ICYMI Apple has opted in all users to "Homomorphic-based Enhanced Visual Search". This allows it to grab your photos & geolocate landmarks in them. They say this is being done in a way that preserves privacy but it being secretly sprung on users doesn't inspire confidence.

It’s the paper clip scenario, but 15x more boring because we do the work for the paper clip machine.

Just saw a take on HN which amounted to “you should just embed JS” in the context of embedding runtimes into larger programs, and I cannot think of a more heinous suggestion.

Just discovered that God Of War: Ragnarok won’t launch offline because the ✨single ✨player✨game✨ can’t reach with servers. WTF Sony.

PhantonData and Branded types in Rust finally clicked for me the other day and it’s a proper lightbulb moment. So many times I’ve needed them, and had to “worse approximate” them using runtimes enums!
