#FromOneLine 433 #writing #LifeLessons 🤕 It was a rhetorical question, but I answered it anyway. "No... no thanks. I've found, in the past, a punch in the face to be a unwelcomed experience. How about you? Would you like one?" 😏 My sarcasm was not well received. He punched me in the face. 👊

It was a rhetorical question Or so he thought “How do they let him continue to embarrass himself?” He didn’t realize he’d asked it in a room Where it would start a spirited debate About whether he was a sickly elder Or a brilliant genius Were “they” abusing him Or genuine believers

When I visit him on Sundays, it’s our day, just us. We still manage to go for our walks after Sunday dinner, the fresh breeze in our hair. We don’t walk as far now, but we still collect conkers as we go, he knocks the branches with his stick and we laugh as they rain down on us.

In December, his stick supported his steps through the dark woods when no path was discernible. 'What is, is,' he would say. 'Follow the stick. We can get through it.' Nana held his other hand as his strength left him. They walked together, both thankful for the life they had shared. 3/4

As it aged, it ripened to ebony. On Sunday afternoons in September he would lead me to the brambles, hold back the thorny briars with his stick that I might pluck the warm, bulbous fruits and taste the last of the summer sun as I mashed them between my tongue and the roof of my mouth. 2/4

My grandfather's walking stick was gratitude. He leaned on it his whole life. He cut it from a blackthorn as a young man, whispering thanks to the Lady of the Sloes. He sanded and oiled the wood, rounded the knotty handle to the cup of his palm, and fitted a ferule of beaten copper. 1/4
