Hello!
My main interests are writing and learning, particularly as they relate to productive disagreement in rhetoric, organizational & workplace communication, emergent strategy, coalition work, and facilitation.

New OA publication! ✨ Digital Democracy from Below is a collection of 34 essays exploring where less obvious democratic levers are hiding in the digital age. We present democracy as a form of government, a way of living and a skill that can be collectively practiced. Here: doi.org/10.5281/zeno...
how long before canvas introduces a mechanism to quantify how long instructors take to grade a single essay, which mgmt will then use as a metric to allocate teaching and grading hours?
From @jakemgrumbach.bsky.social + @adambonica.bsky.social:
"The Democratic Party is being devoured by an ecosystem of consultants. Mostly out of view of the party’s voters and activists, political consultants are paid to raise the money, place the ads, and set the strategy." trib.al/5hL0Lsd
Democrats are still stuck in "workforce readiness" and the transactional job training paradigm of the neoliberal university. The Republican Party, conversely, as it's moved toward fascism and authoritarianism, has rediscovered that the things we believe about our country and its people matter.
Do Democrats not see that the effort to build civic centers using taxpayer dollars and private funding at public universities is an effort to shape future voting preferences against them? Why aren’t rich Democrats counter the Right and funding normal humanities departments?
This piece by student journalist Naishu Vempali made me pump my fist in solidarity. I hope when I’m back teaching at UMass next year they take a class with me, where they can expect nothing but top quality human-grade feedback, interaction, and attention.

Have faculty elsewhere had their admin introduce CircleIn (an AI "tutoring" app that is integrated into LMSs) & if so are your students receiving emails like this? Despite being told that we can opt our courses out of CI, we've reason to doubt that—plus this email directly undermines us as teachers.
At MIT, an alliance between property service workers and graduate students shows the power of wall-to-wall organizing for living wages and workers’ rights against a shared, well-resourced management. Read more: tinyurl.com/MITWorkersUn...@32bjseiu.bsky.social
Great discourse on intellectual community this morning, and I just want to add that pushing course caps, teaching loads, and the institutional churn of structural precarity increasingly forces scholars into narrower, lonelier working conditions.
the other thing is that conservatives resolutely do not see the purpose of education as providing social mobility but as reifying and deepening existing inequalities of status. they are as hostile to low income students getting admission to elite institutions as they are black ones.
Slavery was and is a real thing that has brutalized hundreds of millions of people over the course of human history, if someone tells me a fucking chatbot is enslaved I'm immediately throwing hands. It's not cute, it's not intriguing, it's an insult to real people who suffered and suffer now.

"Diversity describes who is present. It says nothing about what those present are permitted to do, to say, to challenge, or to become."

That’s why we developed the Data Work Landscape, which maps the hidden supply chain powering AI.
But to truly understand the impact of this layered system, we gathered stories from workers at these companies, like Junbee. techequity.us/2026/06/23/s...
This is today! I’m excited to talk about why inevitability discourse only serves wealth and power, big ethical questions about AI products themselves, and a framework for thinking through whether or not to use AI. Discursive strategies for refusal, too. You can sign up right until the session start!
I am doing an online workshop next month for BCcampus about ethical practice and genAI tools. If you want to come hang out in a space where inevitability discourse is verboten, consider registering: bccampus.ca/events/the-f...
When the AI bubble pops, we can’t repeat past corporate bail outs. We need to be ready with policies that protect ordinary people and hold tech execs accountable. We also need to talk about nationalizing AI companies — or maybe even abolishing them altogether…

RTD's new app while nice while it lasted, I guess.
People are reporting not being able to log in, which I experienced yesterday.
RTD's solution? Use the old app.
Which requires calling customer service if you've already used up your allotted app/device changes.

OK, since this thread has blown up a bit, I think it's worth clarifying in a new thread to what extent the 'GenAI is asbestos for the mind' analogy might hold up, and where it breaks down (as even useful analogies always do): 1/n
CAPU is seeking a $500,000 grant from the city to further commemorate that history and revitalize the alley from a loading zone back into the cultural hub it once embodied.
I feel like, since the pandemic started, we not only failed to structurally integrate the necessary infrastructures for hybrid events, but lost several mechanisms we USED to have. Where's the widespread hashtag use? Where's the conference accounts posting reminders?
Maybe it's happenstance, i dunno
