I'm unsure of this, but i get the underlying logic.

My own two cents on spotting genAI crap within retro game modding/hacking & homebrew communities: One of the easiest telltale signs of something being vibecoded is if the "project"/"mod"/"hack" in question uses a particular faux "pixel font" with zero variation:

One of the first things I did to improve editing was to combine the UK soundtrack to the other version as a personal project. Of course, a remaster of the UK version came out shortly later.....

Lastly, if developers didn't want folks to put more quarters in, why would they make this lol Also, ask yourself - what's the purpose of a continue screen? In an arcade it's to *get you to put more quarters in*.

It is absolutely true that later games aimed for 1cc (especially STGs) but it was expected you'd have to spend to get there. A quote: " After all, if there weren’t fans willing to part with their money in our interest there would be no [us]." That company? CAVE. shmuplations.com/cavestghisto...

Second to last thing - bona fides, in case you think "oh well, he just sucks." Hate to tell ya but 90s sucked being a kid and dares would get your face smashed in at Nathan's if you didn't comply. So because of fear I 1ccd: Terminator II arcade Final Fight Ninja Turtles Adulthood: Batsugun

This is especially notable with Xevious Famicom and Gradius for the Sharp X68000, both "killer apps". We've always had skill as an option in arcades, but it's not the default, and due to high traffic, low time, and being too young to have enough money or time to perfect skill, it was rarer.

Now, we've talked about ports. That's one way - arcade perfect ports were always a selling point. But practice exploded with emulation. Now you had the ability to test yourself without spending actual quarters. But - perfecting in emulation is not the same as perfecting in arcade.

In a "call is coming from inside the house" moment, the developer dissatisfaction about how beat em ups were turning out came from.. Capcom. Are they selling themselves short? Absolutely. But don't claim developer intent when we have written record of developer intent. shmuplations.com/capcom1991/

Next point - the idea of getting better at arcades doesn't come from arcades themselves, but ports. Home ports of arcades sold for that reason and it was so popular that it was used as a killer app.

First off. The first games with continues are Super Cobra, Bosconian, and Fantasy. That's 1981. So very early on. Also, before we had video arcade games we had electromagnetic machines. So the "quarter muncher" model predates the concept of a video arcade game itself. See this ad? It's from 1940.

Back to NYC in a week to try to solve worsening jaw health (genes suck sometimes), working on finishing Q&A and next video by then. Progress is slow.

Jeez, old enough for EA to drain dry two of my favorite game companies in a parallel path. I kinda figured Bioware would go the way of Origin eventually, but it is still unpleasant to experience. Hope the devs end up somewhere good.

We all know the "Viggo broke his toe" story but what's another movie fact you're personally compelled to bring up every time without prompting? For me, it's the fact that Robin Tunney is wearing a wig in The Craft because of having just shaved her head to save her job filming Empire Records.

Stumped on this one - anyone have any thoughts what the original magazine scan would be for this image? Would've been from July 1992ish. Checked LOGiN, PC Engine Fan and Famitsu. Of course, just because I did not see it doesn't mean it isn't there.

Deeply worried about making enough / proving chronic illness or caretaking for Medicaid work requirements next year. Hasn't been looking good so far. Not sure how to solve this puzzle.

In the thread itself I mention being immensely creeped out by the tone and jank of the cartoon Spartakus and the Sun Beneath the Sea, but thinking on it I'm gonna go with "lady gets turned into a computer metal thing in Superman III" as the actual first thing I can recall

Sleepy Hollow Reviews 🎃🐎@sleepingvillage.bsky.social

In honor of scary media month: what is the first piece of media you remember truly frightening you as a child?

I will say that after running smack into the whole "Twilight Zone Magazine platforming Aum Shinrikyo Guy" scandal and the relevant essays about it when researching the bonus video I now very much get what Koji Shiraishi's OCCULT was trying to reference.

Bonus video is up for relevant tiers and solicitation for Q&A questions is sent out. Have some minor life stuff to take care of, then work on the Halloween video will commence.

Video clips for bonus vid are finished and final touches on script are done, after continued emergencies kept pulling me away from it. Next step is to re-record final, add music, citations, and credits, and then it'll go up, along with the Q&A solicitation for Patrons.

Yet more hospital confusion with family heart surgeries. @_@. I like the cardiac ward a great deal but my family's problems always seem difficult to diagnose. I would like this constant barrage of emergencies to stop. It's been six weeks of this @_@

Recent Wizardry discussion is making me think of Will McLean's original manual illustrations. Look at this Moebius lookin' dude

Still recovering from the constant hospital stay emergencies for my folks over the last month. The pressure from the storm isn't helping much. Stay safe out there, chronic illness/neuropathy folks - the air feels like a press.

Found by Jumpman at Gaming Alexandria after multiple people including myself have looked for it - The long lost American Xevious arcade commercial! Found in a Phillies vs Mets game, of all things.

While researching Kadokawa Media Mix strategy, I and @katewillaert.bsky.social saw an ad from Gangu Shōhō Jan '52 (discovered by author Marc Steinberg in his book Anime Media Mix) that had the best worst licensed toy of all time and am curious if folks know more about it. Behold the Bambi rifle.

Finally had a chance to catch up on some work. The script for the bonus video on Masaki Iwasaki is almost done, I just need to cover his modern work. Should be a small one of 15-20mins. I'll try to finish it by the end of the week, and then start asking for Q&A questions from Patrons.

Finally got medicine to calm down the facial nerve, but it's taking a bit to adjust to it. Trigeminal Neuralgia & complex facial pain are tricky to calm down once they get going. Also the 'catching a bug at the doctor's office' strikes again. Work continues on patreon bonus, it's just a bit slow.

Not related to Japanese computer games in any way, but I'm a guest on this podcast along with many other GA folks.

More than a year after recording it, here's a new episode of the Memory Machine! What exactly *is* the first "personal computer"? We assembled a stacked roundtable discussion to get to the bottom of it! memorymachinepod.com/2026/08/24/m...

Family health issues have slowed research for the supplemental video but hopefully making meaningful progress this weekend. It's tricky to make a biography of someone who prefers to let their work speak for themselves @_@.
