Ummmm... How can one win player of the year but not win at his own individual position?

100 years from now, some brash young player is going to jokingly deny the existence of PCA and people will lose their god damn minds about it.

Dan Why-Ner@danweiner.bsky.social

Cookie Monster had Boog DYING when he answered who is favorite Cub is (PCA)

1) Stop comparing professional sports to every day jobs 2) These agreements are collectively bargained 3) Keep in mind players EARN those contracts by having to work at significantly below market rates for upwards of 10 years before they get to choose their employer.

davidpegram.bsky.social@davidpegram.bsky.social

That IS what I am talking about. Do you have a guaranteed contract? Does the Trader Joes employee? The team agreed to it because that's what the MLBPA has set up. Contracts are guaraneteed, and opt outs happen after the fact. I can't/won't shed a tear for the players anymore.

Thing that my pitching nerd self finds fun? Doing scouts on minor league arms and writing little blurbs. So going to try to do these every now and then. First up? Kenyi Pérez and his 6/21 outing (His AA debut for Knoxville).

Pitches extremely backwards. Was 73% sliders in this one. Seen him as high as 80%. Fastball mostly 95-96, T98 with what appears to be some carry. Uses it more as element of surprise, but doesn't command it particularly well. Slider is the money pitch. 84-86 with good glove-side movement and depth.

Can rack up whiffs with the slider (Had 5 whiffs on it in this outing). The miss is armside, but he commands the pitch well. Obviously reliever future, but I could see very good 7th/8th inning reliever similar to Pedro Strop if he can maintain the command that he's shown in the last month+.

Exclusively from the stretch, Pérez gives you a bit of the Kittredge lean back look when he comes set. Fills out the pants in the lower half (he thicc) and gets into those legs well. Bit of a head whack and flies open on the front side, which is why he occasionally loses sliders armside.

For a guy looking to pull and lift, I’d view the green circle as the happy zone. Alex Bregman needs to be crushing the ball middle-in. Well… 2023: .397 wOBA 2024: .454 wOBA 2025: .451 wOBA 2026: .308 wOBA Just completely unable to punish mistakes this year.

Gavin Lux, Dustin May, Michael Busch and Matt Beatty

Mike Petriello@mikepetriello.bsky.social

yeah, setting aside everything else, I don't know what you do about "no really, 5 of the top 10 prospects in their stupid deep system came in trades for Gavin Lux, Dustin May, Michael Busch, and Matt Beaty."

The absolute funniest irony of the Bears stadium situation is the same people who bitch about taxes in Illinois are the ones bitching that JB isn’t raising our taxes so a football franchise worth billions can build a new stadium

There's still 6+ weeks to go, and I think on the whole Jed Hoyer is a perfectly cromulent baseball executive, but if this doesn't turn around he should be gone. You can't be allowed to be THIS wrong and still keep your job.

Just such a good, thoughtful dude. PCA clapping back was fun and good. What he said was very much not. And for him to acknowledge not just that it was wrong but WHY it was wrong just shows the type of human he is.

Jordan Bastian@bastianmlb.bsky.social

Cubs center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong held court pregame today to address the heated exchange he had with a White Sox fan during Sunday’s game ⤵️

The man spent like hundreds of millions of dollars to trick lower and middle class Illinois voters into raising their own taxes and even after he succeeded he fled to Florida. One of the worst humans in the world.

Very Important Update: With his homer in the 8th, Cubs first baseman Michael Busch is now batting .304/.412/.589 with three homers, five doubles, a triple, nine walks and 15 RBI in 68 PAs since a goose landed in shallow left while he was batting on April 20.

A friendly reminder that since August 1st, 2023, which is 1,500+ PAs for Seiya, he has been the 11th best hitter in all of baseball with a 139 wRC+. Absolute star hitter.

Brett Taylor@brett-taylor.bsky.social

After his tank last night, Seiya Suzuki is hitting .321/.417/.568/173 wRC+ on the season, the seventh best slash line in baseball. Feels like we're not giving him enough love for a monster start to the year.

I'm not saying Craig Breslow has been perfect or even good, but this narrative that Alex Cora didn't get a fair shake is so wild to me. The guy managed under three different regimes. Post-COVID he had just one 90-win season and hadn't won a playoff series since 2021. The guy got plenty of chances.

Definitely the GOAT baseball player. Terrible gambler, though.

Joe Sheehan@sheehannewsletter.bsky.social

The only bad thing is that Shohei Ohtani has ended any reasonable "who is the best player ever" argument. Bonds, Ruth, Mays, Trout...if you want to make a WAR case, a value case, that's different, but Shohei Ohtani is the best to ever play baseball.

May 1st is a standard opt out for a lot of veteran minor league free agents. Could see some movement here in the next couple days around the league. Just a few names to keep an eye out for Cubs: Lou Trivino (Phillies) Trevor Richards (Phillies) Michael Fulmer (Giants) Tommy Kahnle (Red Sox)

External bullpen name I'd keep an eye on. Lou Trivino. Velo not all the way back but getting bunch of whiffs in AAA for the Phillies. Has a May 1st opt out. Obviously Phillies can just add him to their roster, but Cubs should pressure them into doing so.

I gotta say... The Mets losing this game to extend their losing streak to 11 after getting crapping your pants mad over Mo running over like 6 inches of mound is incredibly funny

Entirely possible this one turns out looking bad, but also some Alfonsin Rosario post-trade vibes here as well

Sam Dykstra@samdykstramilb.bsky.social

The Nationals have promoted infield prospect Ronny Cruz to High-A Wilmington. Acquired from the Cubs last year for Michael Soroka, the 19-year-old hit .333/.460/.627 with three homers and 15 steals in 14 games at Single-A. He was the talk of Spring Training across the org.

I'd wager extension news hits immediately after his debut, which is a pretty clever and nasty bit of work by the Pirates FO. Send him to down to start the year as leverage in extension talks. Promote him once extension is agreed on, but do so BEFORE it's official so he retains PPI eligibility.

Opening Debut.

One of the things that always surprises me is the fan reaction to how bad the 12th and 13th position players on MLB rosters are. MLB teams just do not care about those roster spots and fans just can't help but overreact to those guys on the roster.
