dlvr.itBattlefield 6 Reportedly Cancels Mass Effect Collab In Wake Of BioWare ClosureBattlefield Studios is reportedly cancelling plans for a Mass Effect collaboration in Battlefield 6 in the wake of EA's decision to close BioWare and cancel the next game in the sci-fi series. Fans discovered various Mass Effect-themed cosmetics in Battlefield 6's files, with many speculating that they would be released in November, tied to the Mass Effect N7 Day holiday on November 7. Those cosmetics, which included Mass Effect-themed weapon charms and patches, have seemingly now been removed from Battlefield 6's in-game store prior to their general availability (via Kotaku). https://www.reddit.com/r/LowSodiumBattlefield/comments/1xcmb3o/the_seemingly_planned_bf6_x_mass_effect_pack_is/?utm_source=embedv2&utm_medium=post_embed&utm_content=post_title&embed_host_url=https%3A%2F%2Fkotaku.com%2Fbattlefield-6-mass-effect-cosmetics-n7-day-store-2000749091 If these Mass Effect-themed cosmetics were indeed real, getting yanked only makes sense, considering the blowback EA and Battlefield Studios would have faced for hawking new items based on a franchise that it just killed off. While this Mass Effect collab might not be going ahead, Battlefield 6 is currently hosting a crossover event with Dead Space. It might make financial sense to close BioWare and cancel the Mass Effect series, but fans are upset about the 30-year studio that blazed a trail for queer representation in games closing up shop. The closure of BioWare comes after EA was taken private by an investor consortium led by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. Due to the structuring of the deal as a leveraged buyout, EA is on the hook for a lot of debt, and there will likely be more layoffs and pain for the people working at EA in the time ahead.

Exactly! Where is the budget conscious, lower powered gaming handheld that parents will get their kids for Xmas and birthdays. The low investment foot-in-the-door. Nintendo, looking at you here.

My old Boss Rod Cousens said recently "where is the new GameBoy?" And he is right. Affordable HW with solid games at affordable prices to a wide audience. Have been playing a lot of DMG stuff. With a decent shader running you can see the great Artwork poured into each game.

TLDR: if EA can’t inject Ultimate Team cards and esports into your game, get fucked!

dlvr.itEA Kills BioWare, Cancels New Mass Effect, Pauses New Sims Game, And All The Other Big EA News That Just HappenedWhen EA was acquired by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, many expected major changes at the gaming company, including layoffs and game cancellations, among other shakeups. Now, those have begun, with EA on October 21 confirming a series of significant changes impacting the people and teams that worked on many storied franchises. EA also teased some of what's to come in the future, including a joint project between Respawn and DICE. Here's a rundown of all the big EA news today. Layoffs EA said in a statement that it made the "difficult" choice to lay off staff, and Bloomberg reported that the cuts will impact about 400 people. Affected staffers will be treated with "care and respect," EA said, and some impacted employees may have a chance to get a different job within EA. BioWare closes and new Mass Effect axed BioWare, the esteemed Canadian developer founded 30+ years ago, is shutting down. The studio employed fewer than 100 people, Bloomberg reported, and the team was working on the next Mass Effect. That game is now canceled. "BioWare is a legendary studio that helped define the role-playing genre, and we do not take this decision lightly," EA said. Developers at BioWare had feared their jobs were at risk after PIF announced that it would buy EA. BioWare is known, in part, for making pro-diversity games featuring inclusive storytelling and characters. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lg-Ctg6k_Ao Longtime BioWare writer Patrick Weekes, who was laid off in 2025, speculated that EA’s new owners, including the PIF, might want to avoid “gay stuff” and politics that the PIF’s leadership does not agree with. There has been an outpouring of support and thoughtful messages about BioWare in the wake of the news, from fans and industry professionals alike. CD Projekt's Michal Nowakowski said his company first got to know BioWare when the studio did the work to localize Baldur's Gate games in Europe. Later, BioWare lent its game engine to CD Projekt for the first Witcher game. "Very sad for the people affected, but also sad to see a legendary brand go down. Not a great day in the games industry," he said. New The Sims game paused Another game that's not going ahead at EA is Project Lotus, the codename for new game in The Sims franchise. Another The Sims game, codename Project Evergreen, is now the main focus for the developers working on The Sims. Exactly what this game is, however, remains a mystery, but The Sims is a juggernaut at EA and fans have been waiting for a new game for a long time. Skate gets scaled back EA's new Skate game, which was released in 2025, will remain online, but EA said it's "making changes to the studio," and that includes cutting staff to create a "more focused, smaller team." EA said this will help Skate have a "very clear roadmap" and one that can lead to a "healthier and more sustainable business." EA Sports open-world football game The EA Sports division, which is among the strongest at the company due in part to the lucrative loot boxes and microtransactions in Ultimate Team modes, continue to operate "from a position of strength," EA said. In addition to the usual annual sports games, EA said it has two new projects in the works, including a "brand-new, social-first open-world" football game in the works under the codename Project Gridiron. The other project is the next Fight Night, which is coming back after a 15-year hiatus. Shooters EA said Battlefield 6 was a "great success," and that the studio "learned a lot from the launch and live service." There will be future Battlefield games, as well as a new project to be collaboratively developed by Respawn and DICE. EA didn't say what this will be, but many believe it could be a new Star Wars: Battlefront, following recent rumors that DICE could make that game. Variety reported that yes, indeed, a new Battlefront game is coming. This would not be surprising at all, given DICE's two previous Battlefront games sold a combined 33 million+ copies. As for Apex Legends, EA said it will continue to "invest heavily" in the franchise by adding new gameplay modes and "other new experiences." Iron Man and Star Wars Jedi While EA may have canceled its Black Panther game already, the company's other big Marvel game, Iron Man, remains in development. Additionally, the next Star Wars Jedi game is still on the way, EA confirmed. "Beyond that, we will concentrate our efforts on fewer simultaneous, large-scale projects, ensuring that every game we build in this space is fully set up for success," EA said. The biggest leveraged buyout of all time The PIF, along with Silver Lake and Affinity Partners, took EA private in a $55 billion sale that was constructed as a leveraged buyout, or LBO. This was the largest LBO ever, not just in gaming, but in the history of all business. Since the acquisition was "leveraged," that means it comes with debt, and a lot of it, so many expected EA to make major cuts to help service that debt. Prior to the deal closing, Piers Harding-Rolls of Ampere Analysis said EA may look to “cut excess spending and rationalize the company’s workforce” to help bring in more money to address the debt. A report from Financial Times said EA might look to further bolster AI tools and technologies to help cut development costs and drive profitability. Mat Piscatella of Circana told GI.biz that the companies being acquired in LBOs rarely fare well. “Leveraged buyouts have a certain history that generally hasn’t been great for the acquired companies,” he said.

My biggest fear to come from the EA to Saudi sale has come true. I’m not shocked by this news given who EA was sold to but still, this fucking sucks. Here’s hoping those devs find work soon, in the games business or otherwise.

dlvr.itI Guess I’ll Delete Every PS5 Game I Own To Make Room For FF7 RevelationThere are quite a few months until Final Fantasy 7 Revelation launches on Nintendo Switch 2, PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. But you're going to want to get your systems ready now because the download for the final showdown between Cloud and Sephiroth may be big. According to a September 18 VGC Interview with game director Naoki Hamaguchi, the file size for Revelation will "probably" be absolutely massive. So huge, in fact, that Hamaguchi acknowledged that there was no way the game would fit on one--or even two or three--discs. "In a word, yes. Things are still getting worked out, but it's probably going to be around 200GB of game," Hamaguchi said. "I understand there are a lot of opinions about this topic, but at the end of the day, the fact is we need to overcome the hardware to a certain extent." 2OOGB is pretty huge, especially when the base PS5 (which is what I still have, sue me) holds approximately 667GB of usable storage space. With many of the games I own clocking in just at or well over 100GB (like The Elder Scrolls Online, Ghost of Yotei, Infinity Nikki, and Mortal Shell 2), I'm already debating with myself what games I delete to make room for Cloud's big sword and Sephiroth's shampoo collection. Although Hamaguchi knows that the absolutely gargantuan size of Revelation's download prevents the game from shipping on a disc, he still reiterated the team's commitment to some sort of physical release. What that is remains to be seen, but it is important to Square Enix. "One thing I want to say is, even though the game will not be on the full disc, in the position we’re in, because discs may be dying out, or maybe staying, with Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, we definitely wanted to deliver some kind of physical product," Hamaguchi continued. "That was really important to us. Trust me!" We don't have an official file size for Revelation, as the game doesn't come out until April 8, 2027. However, we do know that it could take about 100 hours to finish, and with two post-launch expansions starring Vincent and Sephiroth that may be the same size as Remake's Intermission DLC, I suspect Revelation will be enormous.

Okay Nintendo. You’ve given the Ocarina sickos what they wanted for long enough. Give us the Zelda 1 remake we’ve wanted for so long. And it better look like this!!! #Nintendo #Zelda

dlvr.itCapcom Is Getting My Hopes Up For Devil May Cry 6 With Its Talk Of “Reactivating” Dormant FranchisesA new Onimusha game hit PC and consoles last week, and so far, it looks like Capcom has yet another win on its hands. Onimusha: Way of the Sword sold 1 million copies on launch day--bringing lifetime sales for the franchise up to 10 million--which is pretty impressive for a series that has been dormant for the better part of 20 years. Commenting on the early sales milestone, Capcom said that it wants to repeat Onimusha's success with other games that haven't seen a new release in many years. "In addition to regularly releasing major new titles each year, Capcom is focusing on reactivating IPs that haven't had a new title launch recently," Capcom wrote in a statement. "The company is working to further maximize corporate value by leveraging its rich library of content, including this title." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2sSPdSPvCU Capcom added that "several marketing initiatives," alongside demos and hands-on exhibitions, also helped spread awareness of the new Onimusha, helping to drive sales. It also helps that the game is genuinely good, with gorgeous visuals and exciting combat that keeps you on the edge of your seat. As for which games could make the cut, take your pick. I'd argue that Devil May Cry is due a fresh sequel, considering that the last game, Devil May Cry 5, was released in 2019, but Lost Planet, Viewtiful Joe, and Dino Crisis fans might fervently disagree with me--and those are just a few of the games that have been gathering dust at Capcom over the years. Whatever Capcom does decide to reactivate, it'll land in the wake of a very successful 2026 for the company. Things got off to a hot start with the release of Resident Evil Requiem in February, and the momentum increased with the launch of Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection in March and the sleeper hit Pragmata in April. On top of that, several Capcom games like Street Fighter 6 have continued to enjoy post-launch support, and future releases include Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen in October, a major expansion for Monster Hunter Wilds, and Resident Evil Veronica. We're even getting a first taste of Capcom's reactivation strategy next year, with the launch of Mega Man: Dual Override.

For myself, this don’t change anything. I only use it from time to time just to quickly check out a game, but nothing close to to these limits. That being said, this still sucks. Especially now that hardware prices are so high and cloud streaming may be some people’s only way to play newer games.

GameSpot@gamespot.com

dlvr.itGame Pass Is Getting Worse, And More ExpensiveMicrosoft has made a big announcement about one of the big perks of Xbox Game Pass, cloud streaming, and the news is not great. Starting in November, Microsoft will put limits on how many hours per month people can use the service, and then allow people to pay more to unlock more time. Below is a breakdown of how many hours you'll get included with the tier of Game Pass you're subscribed to: * Game Pass Ultimate: 15 hours * Game Pass Premium: 10 hours * Game Pass Essential: 5 hours Microsoft said it understands this is a "meaningful change," especially for those who use the cloud regularly for gaming. However, the company said it estimates that these changes will impact about 4% of Game Pass subscribers, though the company did not share any specifics on how it arrived at that projection. A first look at the "cloud playtime remaining" UI on Xbox. For people who want or need more monthly streaming hours, Microsoft will allow people to buy more--but pricing was not announced. Additionally, Microsoft said that in November, for the first time, people will not need to have an Xbox Game Pass membership to stream games with the cloud. People outside of Game Pass will be able to buy cloud playtime through the Xbox Store, though, again, pricing was not shared. Microsoft said this option is meant to appeal to people who don't want to subscribe to a recurring membership like Game Pass and only want "occasional access." "We’re introducing this model because the cost of providing cloud gaming grows as more people use it and play for longer. Moving to monthly limits allows us to keep offering the service while continuing to invest in its reliability and performance. We understand that for some players the practical result is a higher cost," Microsoft said. The company added that it will "listen closely" to player feedback and make adjustments if necessary. Xbox's cloud gaming service runs on Azure servers, and the Azure business is booming. For the first time ever, Microsoft just revealed how much money it makes on Azure quarterly, and the latest numbers showed $29.4 billion in sales. As relayed by Reuters, that's behind Amazon's latest quarterly revenue for AWS of $42.2 billion but ahead of Google's $24.8 billion cloud business results.

I think that most customers don’t even give it a second thought when they “add to cart” and “confirm purchase” (Sonys terminology, not mine). They don’t read the terms of service, they just want to play their game. They just consume (as capitalism intended), which doesn’t sound reasonable at all.

dlvr.itThe Duskbloods Has Some George R.R. Martin In Its BloodFrom Software's next game, The Duskbloods, is inspired by both vampire literature and tabletop games. But another key figure that the studio looked to for motivation was legendary Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin. That's not too surprising, given Martin's involvement with the studio's smash-hit game Elden Ring, and while he may not have had a direct role in The Duskbloods, his work in vampire fiction still had an impact. "From a lore, aesthetic, [and] world-building point of view, there’s nothing completely direct," he said. "Vampire stuff in general is something I’m very passionate about and enjoy reading a lot. There’s definitely a bit of that that has rubbed off on me over time. [Some] things I enjoy include Vampire: The Masquerade, Fevre Dream [by George R.R. Martin], and Dracula Cha-Cha-Cha [by Kim Newman]. Not super old-school stuff, but a bit more modern vampire literature. It’s all very indirect–things that have rubbed off on me over time and things I’ve always wanted to implement. So from an aesthetic point of view, there’s definitely a bit of that." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2WytNOG7TM Fevre Dream was released in 1982 and features cruel vampires who view humans as cattle, while a newer breed seeks to coexist with humans. Beyond his work on the A Song of Ice and Fire books--which were subsequently adapted into a mega-popular live-action series Game of Thrones on HBO--Martin also contributed to the lore and backstory for Elden Ring, devising the 5,000-year history of the game's world. Just don't ask him what his favorite builds are, because he's never played the game. dlvr.itTake-Two Loses Billions In Market Value Since GTA 6 Leaks BeganGTA 6 is set for a big reveal on August 27 with an extended trailer coming to Netflix, but ahead of that, alleged gameplay footage is leaking everywhere. The leaks began earlier this week, and Rockstar owner Take-Two's stock price has fallen this week as well. Take-Two has seen its total market cap lose billions, as the company's share price began the week around $245. Today, shares are trading around $236. GTA 6 releases this November on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The share price of a company can be affected by news, and the GTA 6 leaks have been substantial, generating numerous headlines and even jokes from the US government. Another factor that could be affecting Take-Two's share price includes its top boss Strauss Zelnick selling $10 million worth of shares recently. Additionally, Take-Two's recent earnings report showed that the company lost more than $30 million the past three months, with net bookings falling, too. Another new development for Take-Two's stock recently was the disclosure that the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan bought nearly 150,000 shares of the company worth more than $37 million. Take-Two's share price has bounced around a lot so far this year, and, as of today, it's down more than 6% year-to-date. Over the past year, Take-Two stock is up 3.3%. Anyone who has been a long-term shareholder has benefitted greatly, as Take-Two stock is up about 50% in the past five years. When GTA 5 came out in 2013, Take-Two's stock price was about $18. Today, it's above $235. GTA 6 also suffered a leak in September 2022. At the time, Zelnick said it was "really frustrating and upsetting," but the leaks had no financial impact. Set for release on November 19, GTA 6 is coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The developers at Rockstar were reportedly testing the game for Switch 2, but fans should not get their hopes up.
