when people say "Islamophobia is the only acceptable bigotry" they're not really saying "racism against blacks isn't socially acceptable" they're saying politicians can win elections by saying "i hate all muslims and we should kill them all" in campaign ads.

this probably has enough racism that he'll overlook it, but if i was in this admin i'd be careful bringing up the topic of people who don't win the nobel prize

The Bulwark@thebulwark.com

RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

i'm not that worried about AI in K12 schools because it's not like "learning programs" keep being used in schools for 60 years after being objectively proven to be disastrous for learning

it's not unthinkable that a good artist could take advantage of the aesthetics of AI output to make interesting art so it's notable that nobody (or hedging, almost nobody) has. that would take effort so AI users can't be bothered

the beggars out of here getter@milesklee.bsky.social

In July, an incensed Elon Musk vowed that Grok Imagine would produce a "full-length" and "historically accurate" adaptation of Homer's Odyssey to put Christopher Nolan's woke version to shame. Three months later, we got seven minutes of slop that Grok itself admits is not historically accurate.

"my family fled Trump" is the new "my family fled Castro"

Michael Hobbes@michaelhobbes.bsky.social

What a bizarre article. The premise is about Americans moving to Europe to flee Trumpism, but nearly everyone quoted moved there before Trump was elected.

This is true but it's also true that US Presidents have said this about most foreign election outcomes they dislike throughout history

HELL Kennedy@helenkennedy.com

I know we are all inured, but this is an appalling and unacceptable thing for a US president to say about another country's election.

again I think "stop signal boosting them! they just want attention!" has limits, and the guy who gives briefings to presidential staff is probably beyond that limit and it's then more impactful (in as far as posting is impactful) to signal he's an out of touch idiot as loudly as possible

polymarket saus it's not gambling because "people with knowledge (insider traders)" push the "market" towards the likely outcome; and it turns out lots of people are too stupid to realize you can't insider trade an election

unfair, there's way less insider trading in gambling

Greg Pak@gregpak.net

The fact that we've agreed to call these gambling sites "prediction markets" furthers their bullshit. They predict nothing and it's a disgrace that news orgs have partnered with them and pretend they have news value. THEY'RE JUST A BUNCHA LOSERS GAMBLING.

"the cheese factory thing? that's what 2008-2016 was like every day" AND, that period was better than 1992-2000, which was better than 2000-2006

there's a bizarre amount of liberals who think the civil rights movement was all marches saying "George Wallace is still better than the Republicans, and he's with us on everything else"

Evan Urquhart@evanurquhart.bsky.social

Others see it as a necessary period without which equal rights were impossible, and point other minority groups to it saying "you haven't suffered enough so you don't deserve equality yet." No one deserved slavery or Jim Crow in the first place. Those were crimes against humanity.

The actual evil hotel, in Jack's mind: ow. what the fuck. you know you're working for me right. yeah we want you to get the kid but maybe chill out.

josh (oldfriend99)@oldfriend99.bsky.social

Sorry but this isn't how you take care of a hotel

the thomas friedman "we could've picked any country, but we had to pick some country to beat with a 2x4, to show them all we can," but now for anyone who doesn't conform to fascist aesthetics and/or ideology

flyingrodent@flyingrodent.bsky.social

That what all this shit is, by the way: putting systems in place that make it easier to beat the fuck out of people for fun, and to demonstrate what happens if anyone annoys our horrible ruling class.

looking at the fascist impulse to blame every misstep on "bad advisors" im thinking maybe the Viziers were good and not scheming at all, the sinister Kings were just scapegoating them

we as a society really fucked up when we didn't say "no we gotta make this illegal" the moment the unsolicited pop up window was invented

i can't believe we're here after a significant part of Trump's 2024 campaign was "Democrats will take hamburger"

FactPost@factpostnews.bsky.social

RFK Jr. suggests Americans can more easily afford groceries if they start eating liver instead of beef: "Most of the cheap cuts of meat are very inexpensive. You can buy liver or the cheap cuts."

and the entire establishment will bothsides it with the Hunter pardon, Joe's last "fuck you" to us all

Jeff Stein@jeffstein.bsky.social

Scoop: White House lawyers are weighing preemptive mass pardons for junior staff, sources says Under discussion: Pardoning everyone involved in deportation, war, or trade policy www.washingtonsun.com/whitehouse/w...

trying to think of things that got worse and there's not many i think a lot of things got worse over the past 5 or 10 years but not the last 40

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

housing and medical costs? immigration policy the genocide in Palestine if you get specific, but the 80s were a great time to do US-sponsored crimes against humanity in the general

so like what is the possible strategy to deal with Trump pardoning everyone, even under a SCOTUS that wasn't illegitimate hacks it seems plainly constitutional and legal shitloads of state charges?

*sees a kindergarten level analysis of the military industrial complex* this is so insightful and brilliant

Jay in Kyiv@jayinkyiv.bsky.social

Once again, the White House, Musk and the Kremlin all in lock-step that Ukraine must be destroyed.

seems like "on the orders of a nazi every major news outlet on the planet hounded an innocent man to death because he's black" should be one of the biggest stories of the year

as his recent rant about "defund the police" shows, matty's reality is just The Discourse. if pundits/politicians are saying words matty agrees with, that means he's been Proven Correct. facts and reality don't enter into it

G Elliott Morris@gelliottmorris.com

Matthew Yglesias continues to say that talking about ICE and excessive force in immigration enforcement helps Republicans. He is obviously wrong about this and refuses to acknowledge the data. Way past time for everyone to update their priors on this.

"no state has the right to exist" is not at all the same as "eliminate all states" it's a recognition that a State is its constitution, its borders, its government and its leaders; and no state should have a right or guarantee that those things are unchanging

Yair Wallach@yairwallach.bsky.social

"Does Israel have the right to exist" is a deeply problematic question: "right" can mean very different things, and Israel is not a stable geographic term. Having said that, "no state has the right to exist" is a smartass response that doesn't really work (unless you're an anarchist of course).

stunning to me that both ro khanna and brad lander can go through what they did and still come out saying "i wouldn't say the IDF are bad guys"

Brad Lander@bradlander.bsky.social

I’m grieving the deaths of the two Israeli soldiers killed in Hebron today, and praying for the full & speedy recovery of those who were injured.

the closest we've gotten to the debates Real Americans have is "do all parades have a right to exist" and it ruled

i used to pester Yglesias by asking "if, as you claim, Dems have to get more racist to win elections in order to help minorities, but elections are every two years, then definitionally there is no point where they can abandon racism" and he never answered 🤔

Colin Spacetwinks@spacetwinks.bsky.social

so at no point can you actually pivot to fighting for people because oh no, you cannot possibly afford to alienate *this* group, the random haley voters and such they were hoping they'd pull in by the score. any advances and protections for minorities has to be done invisibly, if at all.

searching for something in my old posts and found 🫠

Fuzzy Mike@fuzzymike.bsky.social

we really do have to do everything we can to spark a Musk/Trump feud because this country won’t be able to recover from putting its communications infrastructure under the control of Starlink

"voters don't understand politics " is like "drivers don't understand how cars work" or "users don't understand how computers work" voting is selecting people who present themselves as politics experts to do politics for us. the job is demonstrate to the people they do car/computer/politics good

Snowden St.@snowden.st

it’s wild to me how many liberals are wedded to the idea that voters are or should be smart and informed people. like, they hold the expectation with near-religious faith.

i like wording implying it's the diagnosis, not the condition, that kills them (allegedly)

FOX 13 Seattle@fox13seattle.bsky.social

People diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) face a roughly 71% higher overall risk of early death compared to those without the condition, according to a new review published in JAMA Network Open. bit.ly/47CbBgY

Ben Shapiro is a decent conservative, by which we mean he's a hardcore zionist and honors charlie kirk. Don't ask about anything else he's ever said or done

You fucked up, you trusted a Just The Tip Trumper

the light in my hallway is flickering. i don't want to change it because it's still got juice but the flickering instantly sets my teeth on edge so i just leave it off all the time and never use it. my brain works SO well

all of software now is just: AI-using Engineer: i just submitted a change that took me half as long because I used AI Reviewer: this took me twice as long to review AI-using Engineer: I just reviewed using AI, it took almost no time Engineer: I had to analyze and justify everything AI didn't like

am i seeing the past with rose colored glasses or are there less different ads in the streaming era like there's now always only 5 ads and you see the exact same ones every commercial interlude

love too poll questions like "should boys be able to tackle girls in football" instead of "should all teen girls be subject to genital and hormone inspections" or "should the government, not sports leagues, mandate eligibility rules"; then yell that gosh we just HAVE to be bigots
