RIP Walter Koenig. I will always remember fondly his request to be shown to the “nuclear wessels”.

My son is doing the Physics GRE tomorrow. He has put in a lot of work, and I know he is stressed… but I am as anxious about this exam as any I have sat for myself. There is so much I want to say or suggest, and instead I am keeping my mouth shut. He doesn’t need me making things harder for him

It’s only been 2 hours, but time drags on when your spouse is in surgery 😰

Operation was about 2 hours, but pre-op + post-op made it 3 hours. All went well 😮‍💨

Currently seeing all the mainstream media claiming polls show the GOP is struggling. But the mood in cities has not predicted recent elections very well at all. The only thing I’ve seen correlating with results has been the prevalence of rural advertising… which is, unfortunately, subjective

I haven’t seen overwhelming MAGA support lately, though what I have seen demonstrates rising vitriol. It’s a lot scarier than it used to be

I wonder what the current opinion is of the older man who *screamed* at me, “God put that man in the White House, and you have NO RIGHT to try to remove him!” 🤔 (A nice lady representing the GOP had to stand between us to get him to back down)

Washington Post has released series of new polling this morning Perhaps this is the most striking finding:

Virginia has an amendment on the ballot to remove an *unenforceable* provision in the constitution about same-sex marriage. It can’t be enforced (even if Obergefell were overturned), so it doesn’t actually matter. Meanwhile, signs are popping up everywhere saying ‘Say “No” to Evil‘. Why? Hate? 🙄

Apparently it’s Catholic bishops pushing for it. It affects no law at all, so it’s simply a statement to reject people.

They’re also pushing to reject an amendment that preserves a right to choice in pregnancy. This one I expected from the Catholic bishops, despite the lack of access killing women.

No one weather event can be blamed on the climate, but it seems way out of the ordinary around here to have a 29℃ day followed a frost advisory that night

On or around my daughter’s campus: Gunfire on Saturday 10/3 Gunfire on Thursday 10/8 Gunfire on Friday 10/9 Gunfire on Saturday 10/10 Shooting on Monday 10/12 People accept this as “normal”?!??

Grateful that my daughter is home for the weekend. Because there’s been more gunfire again. At least this time it’s a few blocks to the West. That’s better, right?

Quoll@gearon.org

Gunfire reported next to where my daughter lives at college. I hate this

Aside from threatening neighbors with annexation, invading Venezuela, and starting a war, I don’t understand how a person who credibly threatened a country with genocide could ever believe he was eligible for such a prize. It would make a mockery of the award www.usatoday.com/story/news/p...

usatoday.com'I'm not bragging': Trump makes last-minute play for Nobel Peace PrizePresident Donald Trump said he should win the Nobel Peace Prize for settling eight conflicts and keeping Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.

Every time I go through a programming textbook that introduces binary, octal, and hexadecimal, I’m reminded of Mrs Kerr’s grade 3 classroom back when I was 7, where we spent several days on “number bases”. Why do I feel like the only person who ever remembered this from primary school?

I don’t know if my classmates from that time remember it, but my understanding was that most of our curriculum was set by the state, so why didn’t my peers at university ever remember this stuff? It always struck me as odd. Does *anyone* else out there recall this from primary or elementary school?

Young people have grown up in a world post Scott McNealy’s 1999 quote: “You have zero privacy anyway. Get over it.” People were angry about it at the time, but we apparently didn’t care enough to do anything about it

idk how people trust anything other than a local model with full unrestricted access to their calendar, email, contacts, messages, cloud storage, financial information, health data, etc. it's absurd that people just do not care anymore, companies don't even hide all the info they want anymore

Several people have said hello to me at Clojure/conj today, saying that they follow me on BlueSky. Hi 👋 And hi to everyone else who follows me too 👋

When I say, “AI is going to kill us all,” I don’t mean that it will act to harm us. Rather, I’m saying that those trying to develop AI will burn so much fossil fuel as to irretrievably push us past a point of catastrophic climate change

My town only had a drive-in. You wanted to see a movie, you had to go to the drive-in. Going to a cinema was an magical experience reserved for when we were visiting my grandparents during Summer

This article points out that the ad is likely a violation of the Hatch act. It’s so cute that they still think this matters

This week the Trump administration ran a 30-second campaign spot on Fox News and Newsmax, labeled "Paid for by the U.S. Government." This kind of propaganda using taxpayer dollars is unacceptable and very likely illegal.

While filling the car with fuel at a local place today I noticed a Nazi sticker posted on the pump. Lovely. 😖

Polio vaccine conspiracy theories are promoted by Big Iron Lung. Because the manufacturers of those machines want to revive their business model. Wouldn’t it be cool to see iron lungs become popular again?

Another week in Oslo. The weather was supposed to be bleak, but turned out quite well… except for drizzle today. But you can’t enjoy the good weather if you never experience poor weather. My ability to read Norwegian is getting better, but my pronunciation is woeful.

It doesn’t help that practically everyone in Oslo speaks fluent English. Who’d want to deal with my terrible language skills if they could just sidestep it and speak English instead?

Babysitting a computer overnight (6pm-6am) as it ran billing queries for a telecom company. If something went wrong, I had a number to call, and the person on call would fix it. I spent my nights reading. Also, I worked on a chicken farm for a while. That was… interesting.

I usually like listening to The Daily, but suddenly hearing the personal details of a suicide in the middle of today's story was not what I was expecting.

The impact of rough sea waves on rescue-boat crews in the Coast Guard can lead to long-term effects, including traumatic brain injury, New York Times reporting found. Here's how a teenager helped expose this widespread danger. Listen to "The Daily."

Some people, when confronted with a problem, think "I know, I'll vibe code it." Now they don't know how many problems they have.

Listen, if you’re not happy single, you won’t be happy in a relationship either, happiness comes from picking a new hobby and then buying all the things to start that hobby then finding the perfect little storage container for those things and then putting that storage container in the spare room

This view has made me take a hard look at my own studies. It’s made me start being very intentional about doing the “hard things” because of the benefits of doing that work, rather than being focused on the product of the work

I’ve come to recognize education as “reshaping the brain”; something that starts at a microscopic level and gradually builds. Very much like exercise gradually reshapes the body. Graduates are expected to *think* differently. AI often leads to students avoiding the necessary mental exercise

I’m also wondering about teaching in the future, even just on the side. I’ve run seminars and courses throughout my career, I’ve been a TA during this program, and students also just ask me for help because they’ve seen me doing well. How would I best help young students in an age of AI?

The 1979 “Buck Rogers” series had a Computer Council running things. Not something I was expecting the US to start adopting any time soon

Across the Capitol, lawmakers are using artificial intelligence to write speeches and news releases, sort constituent mail and draft amendments. Congress has already settled how it will use the technology: broadly and with little oversight.

This morning I warmed up with a short, brisk 2.5km run, and then HIIT. I haven’t done HIIT for about 10 years, and OMG… I’m dying.

Do we really? Or are most of our storytellers incapable of writing a tale that does not personify these forces?

Sounds good, until you consider… what type of power will they provide for themselves? If it’s generated by gas turbines (GTs) then the pollution concerns are enormous. I’d hope that “provide their own power” included limits on the types of generators

NEW: Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-PA) used the following words to describe data center developers today; "Predators" "Bullies" "Secretive" Shapiro signed a new state exec order tightening restrictions on data centers, requiring they get local approvals & provide their own power

I feel a bit guilty that I can track all the phones in my family (though any of them can turn this off if they want). I justify this to myself by remembering that I pay for high data plans for everyone. Unexpectedly, I’ve been told that they all feel reassured knowing that their parents can see them

You know what protects against many deadly pathogens? Vaccines

The Washington Post@washingtonpost.com

The White House is working to strengthen safeguards against biological attacks after staffing cuts depleted expertise in a field where officials increasingly fear AI could make it easier to create deadly pathogens. https://wapo.st/4xKlRij
