Senior Lecturer, University of Brighton. Researching gendered and inclusive language, media narratives of femicide, masculinities and fatherhood. Now focusing on examining Meloni's far-right anti-gendered politics. Born in the South of 🇮🇹.
People now say bad things about Twitter, but exactly four years ago I connected with @genderedform.bsky.social there and now she’s my co-author and friend and I’m so happy to talk to her all the time 💜

In Trento to attend the Società Italiana di Scienze Politiche conference to learn more about political science & to present a paper about the communicative performance of Giorgia Meloni, "split" between the personal (Giorgia) & the political (Meloni, expectations of the role).
and there is little or no time for the audience to ask questions. The audience has a much more passive role. This makes it a bit less interactional and networking-y than i am used to. It's going to be interesting tomorrow when i present my paper.
Another "realisation" is that many presentations have the same layout/design, more likely as an effect of the employment of AI in slides preparation. A reminder that AI is not inevitable but it is a choice.

I have attended few conferences in Italy so i am also exploring the practices. In this conference, the chairs in the panels have a much bigger role than i am familiar with. They give targeted feedback to each paper (as they read the papers/presentations beforehand)..
Today Meloni's government becomes the longest serving government in the history of the Italian Republic.
Pity it's achieved nothing of any value whatsoever.
I reached one of the other sides of the world (from Europe) for the holidays. While i am still adjusting for time, i look forward to visiting Sydney/Gadigal Country and surroundings.

I know it's Saturday☺️& some of my corpus fellows have just returned home from a wonderful #CADS2026. Next week, I'll start a chapter on gender, sexuality & language + corpus. On my way home after #cads2026. I have thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of it! the community is going stronger and stronger making it a place where we all blossom. Looking forward to the next one in Vienna!
12 years ago, I was walking through this spine at Lancaster University to attend my PhD viva. I was anxious but it was such a good experience! Today, I celebrate this anniversary and these 12 years in academia on the very same campus (while attending a conference)!
Selenia Anastasi and Federica Formato are presenting a CADS study of an Italian Incel forum. Interesting to see how Southern Italy, particularly, is discursively constructed with clear gendered patterns. Also very great to know a bit about the manosphere in Italy. #CADS2026
@seleniaanastasi.bsky.social and I are giving our paper this afternoon at 5.30. If you are interested in "the" manosphere, come and check what happens in the Italian one (through an historical lens). #cads2026
Spent the weekend in London with some friends, now in Lancaster for CADS. Looking forward to meeting the CADS community, it will be three days of interesting talks and chats.
When utilized in literature review, LLMs consistently 1. fail to mention female authors in female-led literatures, 2. insist that men are more influential or more heavily cited when this is contradicted by objective citation counts, and 3. attribute women’s work to hallucinated male scholars.
Guess what is the anti-fascist side in Brighton?
With the spirit in Brighton, with the body here in Bologna, getting ready to attend the pride this afternoon!
@giuliaevolvi.bsky.social and i are on our way to (the uni of) Bologna after 4 productive days working at my uni on a chapter where we investigate some IG comments (constructions of masculinities, populism and insults). Hoping for better weather 🫣
Glad to report that the weather didn't disappoint. We cannot say the same about the language we are investigating, as transphobic, homophobic and other types or insults are recurring in our dataset.

Lovely meeting with the octo-crew (@coocho.bsky.social & @domini.bsky.social) today to plan "Influence, Manipulation & Seduction 3: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Persuasive Language" (aka #OctoConf3).

Io credo che le donne nel 1946 sognassero la liberta' delle donne, non UNA sola donna che si occupasse male delle questioni di genere. Ma evidentemente io e FRATELLI d'Italia la pensiamo in modo diverso.
#meloni#giorgia
Today, Meloni remembers Giorgio Almirante on the anniversary of his death. He was leader of far right party MSI (precursor to Fratelli d'Italia) & is greatly admired by Meloni. Under Mussolini he edited the periodical "La difesa della razza" aimed at spreading antisemitic sentiment [Thread] >> 1

The second round deadline is end of May
A reminder that the women of the Iranian national soccer team were forced to return to Iran. They did not leave Australia voluntarily!
The fact that Iran is currently being illegally bombed by the U.S. does not, in any way, shape or form, make its regime less authoritarian, brutal, and misogynist!
Iran 🇮🇷
Iranian women's football captain Zahra Ghanbari has had her seized assets released after returning from an asylum bid in Australia, with Iran's judiciary noting the decision was made "following her change in behaviour”.

I applied for some funding for a project that I am really keen on doing (in my hometown in italy and to counteract the anti-gender politics of the government). First round: rejected for not being too ambitious, second round: rejected for being too aspirational. It's very disappointing!
I put a lot of work in between the two rounds to involve key stakeholders that I was told were missing from the first form. I won't give up, the project is just delayed; I feel it is kind of ironic that the two rejections are so opposite to each other. It's more c'est l'academie than c'est la vie!
The University of Essex has proposed to discontinue most of their undergraduate language provisions as well as the Languages for All programme as part of large-scale restructuring.

I have the sun-FOMO (did we need a new term? no!), I really wanted to enjoy more of the good weather but some urgent work things kept me in the flat the whole day, today. I now found out that the sun is here to stay for some extra days, my sun-fomo is taking a step back and i can plan some walks!
We are delighted to announce this year's winner of the Judith Baxter Award. Congratulations, @peterbrowning.bsky.social. Join us in Southampton (on 10 April) to hear more about Peter's research. See info to register.
