'Don't be evil'. Well, initially. Look, there's all this money to be had.

Anthropic’s filing appears to partly walk back the co-founders’ pledge to commit 80% of their personal equity holdings in the AI startup to philanthropic causes. Those acts, the filing suggests, are “voluntary, revocable expressions” that “do not constitute binding obligations.”

Coupla misses there: NSW South Coast (most of), Townsville - Cairns (it's the dry season).

Housing crisis. Two adjacent multiple-occupancy houses being built on small lots in suburban far-western Brisbane, by a private, for-profit developer. One with (I think) 5 bedrooms, all with outside doors, the other 4; shared facilities. Local word is 'for NDIS'. Could be, I guess; 'group home'?

Neither for nor against here, just interested. Guess there's a large market for this style of accommodation. Fair way from services though. There is a bus, supermarket, walking distance; medical centre a couple of stops on the bus.

So Anthropic is losing north of AUD$200 billion a year. That's billion, not million ... 0.2 trillion Australian dollars. 'But its revenue is growing.' Good. Maybe it has an unassailable market position, safe from competition, new entrants. Might. That's been unaccountably common among IT companies.

With respect Prime Minister. Philanthropy porn is heartwarming and satisfying. But by no means is it any way, to run a country. Society is not organised for the resources of AU to benefit the majority of Australians. In fact they are suffering to benefit a few and being told to shut up about it.

'Narrower goals'... Iran has 10 times the citizen population of Israel. It's 70 times as big. It fought wars with the Roman Empire 2000 years ago.

Jesus wept.

"Good people should be able to have weapons, bad people should have none." Premier David Crisafulli won't enrol Queensland in the national gun buyback. This year 250 guns were stolen Jan-Aug; mainly from Wide Bay–Burnett & Darling Downs where most registered firearms owners reside. #qldpol

Seriously? You're the goddam prime minister, presiding over a deliberately destroyed welfare system.

The Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal is bringing a little bit of joy to Australian families doing it tough. And that’s something our whole Parliament can support.

Has a banking licence, so has the same government guarantee as the others -- $250k per depositor per institution. But is presumably less secure overall.

The last time an Australian bank went belly-up, no one noticed. The government 'persuaded' the Commonwealth Bank to buy it out (BankWest in 2008).

I guess Canada is closer, but not understanding why you would buy any Yank-made vehicles at all. Australia barely does now – about 2.5% of sales. (Ford utes still have a slice of the market here, but local stock is made in Thailand, and in China!)

On the battlefield, Russia's made another entry into its Top 10 days of losses during the entire war. Another 1,990 sacrificial pieces of meat in the last 24 hours, taking October's total to 6th place with 6 days to go. It will absolutely smash the all-time monthly losses total.

Why are Victorians convinced that they were badly governed during COVID ... and *still* hold a grudge against Labor for that? The data doesn't much support such a position: x.com/Gergyl/statu.... Everyone was still learning.

Going to be close. If hold a position of power ANYWHERE, it's your job to promote successors — not one, several, and not by grooming, endorsing; by developing, mentoring, exposing. As a company board member it was one of my top-list questions: what's our leadership succession plan. Lula's a fail.

It's an interesting question, how nuggets like this form, geologically. Big lump, neatly rounded, so alluvial, after an even bigger lump? But it's quite soft, easily worked ... why not destroyed by stream power? Crazily heavy, so sinks among other stones, gets protected somehow?

Can also get rounded nodules in some soils, produced by nucleation and long chemical precipitation. Something like that? Gold is soluble in a few rare chemistries. Somehow created, naturally?
