“There’s also an opportunity for him in this vulnerability to be as great a comfort to many people as he was in the first year and a half of his papacy,” Mr. Gibson said. Leo XIV’s Cancer Diagnosis Tests the Assumption of a Long Papacy www.nytimes.com/2026/10/13/w...

nytimes.comLeo XIV’s Lung Cancer Diagnosis Tests a Papacy Still Taking ShapeFor a pope who appeared to have time on his side, cancer has raised questions about his longevity and brought a new urgency to his plans for the church.

If the Pope’s baseball team clinches playoff series tonight and he wins the Nobel Peace Prize tomorrow morning I think Leo should kick back and take the weekend off.

One thing that’s interesting about this is that it shows that despite insisting the wokes overinterpet everything, conservatives are actually aware of and agree with their critics about how coded racist appeals work, they just like them bsky.app/profile/newr...

FYI for folks here in the BlueSkylo—the American pope has been in France saying all the things you wish an American president would say. It’s good to get out sometimes.

I'm not the kind to say it all points back to a single historical episode, but so much of what Trump is doing with ballroom & Kennedy Center—the wanton destruction, the callous indifference to the past—was evident when he destroyed Bonwit Teller's irreplaceable sculptures nearly a half-century ago

Michael Lobel@mlobelart.bsky.social

I'm just a lowly art historian, but in moments like these I always think back to one early sign of Trump's wanton, pointless destructiveness: his demolition of the priceless & irreplaceable Art Deco relief sculptures on facade of the Bonwit Teller building, which he tore down to build Trump Tower

God upon hearing this:

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Wow -- RNC video: "On June 14th, 1946, God looked down on his planned paradise and said, 'I need a caretaker,' so God gave us Trump." It only gets more unhinged and culty from there.

For a sense of what the Catholic Church can be, and how synodality (the word that shall not be named!) in action works, check out this short doc on the "Way Forward" project that we help organize each year:

Can the Catholic Church learn how to evangelize in the contemporary world? To try to answer that question, the Way Forward Conference brought bishops, theologians, and lay leaders together in dialogue. Watch this video to hear from them.

“Entirely aware of their own standing in the shadow, and yet alive to every tremor and gleam of existence, there they endure, and it is to the Greeks that we turn when we are sick of the vagueness, of the confusion, of the Christianity and its consolations, of our own age” – Virginia Woolf.

Virginia Woolf may not be around to see Christopher Nolan's adaptation of The #Odyssey, but her work serves as a helpful guide to make sense of the discourse (and drama) surrounding the upcoming film. Read more from @oliviapoust.bsky.social.

This "schism" will be a wake-up call to many Catholic conservatives who will have decide whether they want to sink into a state of permanent opposition, not really a Catholic option, or double down against a 70-year-old Pope who wants unity and will be around a long while...

Final note: I covered the FIRST schism by the SSPX in 1988! JP2 and Ratzinger bent over backwards to accommodate them. But here we are again. Schismatics gonna schism. History repeats. The church does not forget. Be interesting to see how tough Leo is on the Trads. FIN

Issue No. 2, namely that the Latin Mass Trads and their allies on the Right are, like so many secular national populist movements, reacting against the shift away from their cultural base in the West, and they want to retain and reclaim that privileged position ...

First, the SSPX and their fellow travelers in the Old Tridentine Mass orbit are so tiny they represent a rounding error in the 1.4 billion member global church. Also, their arguments don't hold water--but it's a waste of time going down that liturgical rabbit hole ...

The central problem that the SSPX splintering highlights is the wider "affective" schism on the right that wants to 1) re-litigate the Second Vatican Council's reforms on religious freedom, the outreach to Jews, Muslims, and Protestants, a pastoral engagement with the world ...

That's why most journos don't mind being on Twitter but dislike Bluesky. They can't function is an explicitly moral context. Cf this piece by @booman23.bsky.social.
