i'm not 100% joking either. these group project pilots where everyone passes the same $20 back and forth is just not sustainable. it's nice to have a good looking pilot, but i'd rather adopt 60's Hanna Barbera practices and actually make shows, shows that don't cost hundreds of thousands of dollars

Agreed. The minute you’d ask people to pay for animation (especially for independent shows) is when you hear crickets. Unfortunately we forget that the money _has_ to come from somewhere. If we want to support ideas outside the standard entertainment companies, we need to find was to pay artists!

a cool thing about indie animation is that it's expected to save the entire industry, every show has to look better than the things the fans grew up on or it's a waste of time, there's no union to be found anywhere, no budget for any of it, and asking the audience to pay anything to watch is illegal

This isn’t even a “haha digital circus fandom bad” thing. In my opinion ALL fandoms are bad because the internet, by design, enables all sorts of zealotry and narcissism. “Fame” affords me a lot; more than most people can say. But also I need to maintain a healthy distance from it.

Disney Animation’s ‘Hexed’ will feature a hand-drawn 2D prologue telling the story of how the Kingdom of Hexe became a refuge for witches and wizards persecuted in the real world. Tyler Pacana, one of the studio’s few remaining 2D animators, animated the sequence.

My kid has started a Letterboxd list called Killer Sweaters for films where the killer wears a great sweater and they've asked me to throw it out to Bluesky for more because "that's the kind of thing those weirdos like to do"

It took a while, but in a way the American animation scene is finally getting on the same page as what international animation has done already for the last 15 years, and it couldn’t have come sooner. It really feels like the broad perception of the medium here is slowly but gradually changing.

Working on the rough draft of the storyboards for the upcoming animation “Ampere’s Daemon: 1920!”. Ampere’s Daemon was focusing on his work until an incoming telegram caught his attention!

This is such an awesome series! The fact that it turns the idea of saving the Disney-esqe princess into a horror show is so interesting. Plus the animation is really great! Also, I loved the tribute to Luis De La Rosa at the end.

This amazing clip has reminded me of something that I think does need reminding: a few decades ago wasn't the stone age, Japan had the best AV tech in the 70s and 80s, and the principles of animation have been known and established for most of the 20th century.

Yeah the biggest human trafficking bust in 21st century US history went down in 2021. Operation Blooming Onion. They took down a $200 million slavery ring in Georgia. 100% H2A visa workers who immigrated legally. This was HUGE NEWS for anyone who was paying attention to farm worker & labor issues.

I mean, a shit ton was done in '21. It's just that none of it was really aimed at alleviating these particular issues because the de facto slaves don't vote and none of the blue voters particularly care about them. There is/was no constituency for this issue, so we need to make one ourselves
