It's looping the loop! Right after I saw and heard starlings in a marshy area making red winged blackbird calls (they've all gone south already), I go online and see snakes doing this! Nature is bonkers.

Ever see a snake do a barrel roll? Scientists disentangle the locomotor kinematics of this behavior in rolling snakes. Learn more in Current Biology: spkl.io/633287ntaA Yosuke Kojima & colleagues @currentbiology.bsky.social

Went for an hour run this morning and according to Strava, this was my, uh, longest run. According to Strava I also burned 35,000 calories. I am reminded, once again why I almost never use Strava.

THE REIGN OF TERROR IS OVER! THE RED ROSES HAVE FINALLY BEEN DEFEATED! WHAT A VICTORY FOR CANADA! WHAT A DAY FOR RUGBY 🏉 Bloody hell what a game!

It's not every day you just, you know, become a pilot. Three years ago we were watching float planes take off from Vancouver's inner harbour and I thought, "How do you do that?" Then, later, I thought "I just take a step, like always." I've taken a few steps, it just took some time.

All that will be left of the world in 30 years will be ugly little coprolites comprised of all the nicest things we ever had.

We put a tracking device in a shipment of rare books acquired by an anonymous buyer. It ended up at an Amazon facility where the company scans books for training data and destroys them in the process: www.404media.co/we-tracked-a...

This little fella left Earth to travel out into the universe today🥹 When my parents got him, I thought "Sweet, a little dog will keep them active!" They got the only dog in the world that hated going for walkies. Thanks for the laughs, little man, say hi to Dad for me.

Former co-worker sent me this paper and, low and behold, I had done the illustrations in it. Always nice to see them out in the wild - the "wild", that is, of scientific publishing. Brain base surgery is some weird stuff.

Folding this light merino long sleeve that I’ve had for over a year and, for the first time, noticed this tiny label sewn inside near the hem. I liked this shirt before, but now… I needed this message as I’m about to fly home to a whole raft of crummy little life problems.

Someone working on the same Big Pharma marketing project as me explaining to me what the anatomy of a heart and vascular wall look like as I sat on my lunch hour in my office in the human anatomy lab at McMaster University; that maybe the project should hire a medical illustrator.

If you see this, please tell me the worst/most baffling bit of creative feedback you've ever recieved. Mine is still the time somebody told me my aliens had names that were too alien. Not that they were unpronounceable, just that they didn't sound enough like human names.

I have been loving the non sequitur humour in ACARS Drama. Tonight, somewhere over northern Florida, someone on aircraft is extremely smelly.

FYI commercial airline cockpits have this kind text to radio system that they use to communicate to their dispatchers or maintenance etc. “PAX” = passengers.

This is the opposite of a boast. Watching someone you love try their hardest at something really, really important to them, knowing they are going to fail, is just heartbreaking. I wish I was talking about kids because they tend to move past this stuff, adults not so much.

I swear all the worst stuff seams to happen over Valpraiso, Indiana.

Nobody "earns" billions. Oversimplified (ie not accounting for invested money or wacky returns), but say you have a 45 year working career. To "earn" a billion you would have to make, on average, >$22M per year. Once you "earn" a billion, you should be made into sausage.

Karl Bode@karlbode.com

The Washington Post is just so profoundly embarrassing now

Update. I was curious so I did some math. Say your living expenses were ~$55K/y adjusted for inflation and you invested the rest of your income in an account earning around 7.5% per year for 45y. You would have to earn a little more than $3M per year for 45yrs to retire a billionaire. Not realistic.

Also, if you're living costs are around $55K/y, you don't need to work for more than 2 years at just over $3M/y to retire, very, very comfortably. So nobody's gonna stick it out for 43 more just for the billion unless you're mentally ill. Billionaires just need to be made into sausage.

And there it is. The first request from a client to clean up some medical illustrations that they had AI do. [Honestly, they're not terrible. But it's pretty clear it's been fed a steady diet of BioRender stuff]

Sees pizza box fly off roof of car driving past house. Rescues pizza box from getting squished on road. Waits to see if driver doubles back upon realization of error. They do not. Free fresh pizza. My weekend is off to a great start!

Had on a Niel deGrasse Tyson Startalk podcast and they were talking about how silly zombies are. I totally agree. This was my working example poster for my scientific illustration students last, fall illustrating why zombies are not the threat we think they are. #SciArt youtu.be/UwlV-mflc7o?...

2. A dutch pancake house in the woods, accessible only by foot, horse or bicycle. 3. An industrial design prototyping shop, basically what I do now but better resourced and not out of the basement of our house.

Lol, I can't count the number of times during road rides that my competitive pride has spotted another cyclist up ahead, so I bust my nut trying to reel them in and pass them only to find out it's a 65 year old on a step through e-bike. After that, pride prevents me from relenting, so I nearly die

Ebikes are the great equalizer.

I was an Artist in Residence with the USFS in 2014. As a 🇨🇦 I learned a lot about how the US treats it's natural spaces and designated wilderness areas. The people who worked and volunteered were some of the loveliest people I've ever worked with. This, among many things, makes me sad for America.

Breaking: Trump orders the dismantling of the US Forest Service. All regional offices are being shut down and the research program destroyed.

Oh boy. These are so insidious. They *LOOK* like an anatomical diagram, have the same visual style and language. But when you start to look closely and scrutinize it - never even mind the labels - it's almost entirely wrong. Like, not one correct thing about it.

Karen James@kejames.bsky.social

There are so many no-good, terribly bad, wrong, AI-generated anatomical diagrams out there. Here's one I found on the website of an actual clinic in Minnesota. Yikes. Be careful out there.

That feeling when you find someone’s wallet and root through it *just enough* to figure out who they are and how you’re going to get it back to them. Was able to drop it off just when they were really starting to panic, made someone’s day!

Given our 60 degree temperature swing from coldest days to hottest days in Canada, you would think we would be world leaders in building energy efficient housing. But, if we build them at all, we build the bare legal minimum quality house. I wish this would change. We need it to, like, yesterday.

Is literally tar+sand. Tarsand. They're hella flammable too. All those roofs doing nothing but being a massive counterproductive liability. You'd think we could mandate that they do a little more work for us. Don't even get me started on Passive - I know, it's coming. We need to to better.

Imagine if all the roofs you saw flying into Pearson - warehouses, light industry, housing - all had solar or were green roofs or, gasp, were greenhouses growing food for local consumption? We might actually put a dent in this thing.

Take roofing for example. Fly over the suburbs into any Canadian airport and you see an ocean of roofs doing sweet nothing more than being an umbrella over ventilated attic space. In the summer, their dark colour contributes hugely to urban heating, in the winter the lack of snow on them is a tell

Where a house is bleeding heat. It's rare to see solar water or electric for a bunch of silly reasons from disincentives (ahem Ontario), lowered re-sale value (seriously!), to the very shape of the roofs - a square house but with a roofline akin to a medieval village. The roofing material of choice

My octogenarian Mum has to write a book report for her book club. We fired up the old computer, updated it to windows 11 and, much to my surprise, Word 2003 works a dream. Surprisingly, pleasantly unshittified.

10 Years ago, when we lived in Dublin, we walked down to O'Connell Street with some friends who were visiting. It was jammers. There is a really cool - kind of organic - parade through central Dublin. All the floats are human powered with limited height to clear the Luas catenary. There's definitely

locals out, but this is mostly tourists. You can feel it picking up at the beginning of March, the tourist influx. St. Patrick's day in Ireland is a actually a pretty quiet holiday for visiting friends and family. We usually went for a walk in the Wicklows. Happy St Patrick's for those who celebrate
