The Washington Post is just so profoundly embarrassing now

it's funny to me that Bezos (and Ellison) have all the money in the world but they're incapable of creating useful, well-crafted right wing agitprop that at least respects your time CBS News is trash, WAPO Op/Ed section reads like a children's book written by a developmentally disabled mongoose

It’s quite unrealistic for most people to even become a millionaire, or half a millionaire, in their entire lifetimes. Sure, don’t say it’s impossible. But it’s unlikely. Billionaires are a freak of tax policy nature.

I spent the 1990s checking out how a series of rich individuals got their money. Every one I dug into was a scammer, monopolist or criminal. These included Mark Shapiro, Paul Mears, David Siegel and Congressman John Mica.

No wonder why people are paying respects to the late Ted Turner (despite being indirectly responsible for a bunch of domino effects that lead to the hell we’re currently living in…)

The hit piece they wrote eulogizing the Left Coast the other day was equally bad. Just indistinguishable from a random far right blog circa 2008 these days.

Even bad right wing slop agitprop is still right wing agitprop. The Nazis started out amateur hour as well. Current US billionaires have a lot more data and resources to iterate and ‘improve’ their agitprop with quickly.

but remember that something like half US Americans can’t even read above a fifth grade reading level so they don’t need to create better propaganda for them because most folks would not understand it anyway

Just nut up and say the slur if you're just going to mock the same people regardless. So many words for fuckwit and you're struggling with the semantic treadmill on the slowest speed.

The fact that their agitprop reads as obvious bunk to those it does not convince doesn't mean it's not well-crafted. Many successful ideas seem obviously stupid to people who don't believe them. This has included ideas that were brilliant and revolutionary, as well as ideas that actually were stupid

Perhaps it is more just about capturing the institution so it can no longer fulfill its intended purpose more than actually being good at it. I think Ellison knew Bari would fail at CBS, but that was the point. And gaining Trump’s favor.

These idiots never read a book or experienced life outside their myopic view of their own shallow self interest. To truly believe you can EARN a billion dollars AND that by doing so you show the potential of human achievement is so completely divorced from the meaning of those words as to be 🫠

Naturally he doesn't mention where you're going to get the money to buy enough land to grow 3.9 million tomatoes. Or any needed fertilizers, machinery, and so forth. Or the labour to pick them. Or what happens if you have a bad weather year or insects eat your entire crop. Armchair farmers. 🙄

"To say no one can earn a billion dollars is to lack the imagination for just how far we will let inflation hit the USD until we start printing $10Trillion bills like Zimbabwe"

If wealth rations applied to sport, the fastest marathon would be well under 1 second. Sad we've limited that possibility wealth ratios are clearly just about genuine human potential

In the past, their response was: "You can't tax billionaires! They're the job creators! Threatening them with an 5% increase in taxes will put thousands of jobs at risk!" And that argument no longer holds water because of their aggressive push for AI.

We are fairly secure. Should be able to retire reasonably well. But if you fast-forwarded thru the rest of our lives, kids' lives, & grandkids' lives, if our income/expense/investment habits so far become a 3-gen trend, our great-grandkids would still not inherit anywhere near A BILLION dollars.

who made the shoes? where did the raw materials for the shoes come from? who shipped the shoes? who is impacted by the waste produced by manufacturing the shoes? the shoes didn’t pop into existence in the back room of the shoe store there was a ton of exploited labor required to make them

What the article should say is “if you have rich parents who lend you a few million, and you exploit a lot of people at every step of the way, and bribe the right politicians to give you grants and tax cuts, you might end up with a billion dollars”.

But have you considered that HYPOTHETICALLY we might undergo Weimarr or Hungarian style hyperinflation, and EVERYONE might legitimately earn a billion dollars? 🤓 Erm, checkmate!

absolutely, because no one becomes a billionaire just by selling shoes or any other product, you can only become a billionaire by massively exploiting other people

Is there a billionaire who built their fortune on selling expensive shoes? If there is, its going to involve nor having Netflix, avocado toast, inheriting $500,000,000, and exploiting third-world labor.

Every market is fully calcified except making some dumb tech startup that gets in a magazine and is bought by people who actually have a billion dollars to spend. you're not selling shoes and making a billion dollars, unless they are a million dollars each pair.

To the same degree that any billionaire has "earned" their money, Phil Knight (co-founder of Nike) could be counted as such. But, you know, his wealth comes from the exploitation of the labor of others.

Nobody "earns" a billion dollars. They steal it from the productivity of their workers. If Jeff Bezos was still selling books himself out of his garage, there is no possible way he would ever physically be able to earn a billion dollars, let alone a hundred billion...

I think people can't even think about numbers that big (a billion) or odds that small (approaching zero). Like 1 in 100 odds I can visualize, even 1 in 3000. And that's probably the odds of getting some terrible disease you really don't want, that also bankrupts you. But this nah. Inconceivable.

the (very stupid) op-ed is also misunderstanding her argument, it's not that a person cannot make a billion dollars, it's that they can't "earn" a billion dollars. You don't become a billionaire through salary, or the direct work of your own hands; at that scale exploitation is inevitably part of it

Who did Taylor Swift exploit? Other than the friends and exes that make up her source material I suppose... I think there are exploitive billionaires but there are certainly people who are rich because they made things that many people value...

Same outlet and billionaire actively destroying democracy - depreciating the ability for human beings to have any control or autonomy over their own lives - under the idea that maybe they can't handle it. Bezos and his Epstein class friends have no shame.

Imagine business where the profits are shared primarily with those who make the products. In America abusive groups where employees are treated as disposable & cruelty with low as possible pay are typical. Imagine the quality & customer service where all employees have positive, fulfilling lives.

Nobody “earns” a billion dollars. No one is working a million times harder than anyone else. You deserve to be rewarded for clever business but 1. The rewards should not be so far above the effort involved 2. You are not worth a million other human’s efforts

I knew it was time to cancel my subscription a few years ago when I was often reading more accurate information in the comments section.

On the contrary, "Washington Post Editorial Board," believing that earning a billion dollars is a result of "human potential" when billionaires make up 0.00005% of the population reveals a much lower opinion of human potential.

That .000005% seemed high to me so I checked it out. 2,781 billionaires / 8,300,000,000 people = .000,000,33506% of the population are billionaires. three millionths of one percent

Sometimes it's "human potential" with a lot of luck & government subsidies. Tesla would have folded without its half-billion dollar taxpayer loan from Obama in 2009. And Musk gets most of his billions from US government tax and regulatory credits. So we taxpayers are subsidizing most billionaires.

I’m constantly mad at myself for canceling my subscription in protest a few years ago because it means I’m unable to do it again every time they pull some fuck-shit like this

WaPo's pre-2026 election setup--get into the minds of the public that those frightening Democrat[ic Socialists] Mamdani and Ocasio Cortez are to blame for whatever, especially your lack of "freedom."

I think I need to retell this joke:

Gro-Tsen@gro-tsen.bsky.social

Do you know the story of how John D. Rockefeller Jr. made his first million dollars? A moving tale of American entrepreneurship! He bought a dirty apple for 1¢, made it nice and shiny, sold it for 5¢, bought 5 more apples, made them nice and shiny …

Let's assume a 50 year working life. For the sake of simplicity, let's assume a constant level of income throughout. To earn a billion dollars would require an annual income of $20m. As a fairly well paid, in-demand, professional, the best I ever managed was 1/100 of that for a fraction of my life.

That does match Oligarch Bezos directive about editorials pushing personal freedom and liberty, and it kisses his hinder! Win-win! If only he read WaPo, and not The Free Press.

The only billionaires who potentially earned their money are in entertainment because they're not stepping on others for their earnings. They don't HAVE to fk over others to earn their money. But business owners? Gfy.

Aside from their valorization of the excesses of materialism, championing that cause as if they're sticking up for the "potential" of the everyman is especially galling. They're insulating the obscenely wealthy from criticism by pretending the common person is one idea away from joining them.

OK, Editorial Board. Tell me how. Is this a "one weird thing" situation or more of a "I know someone earning $20,000,000 a week part-time in their basement" deal? I'm open and flexible with inconvenience for that level of compensation.

it suffers from the same disease of most of establishment media, but it really is exponentially worse under Bezos than it even was just three years ago

“(Workers) suck shit and beat themselves into the ground all day to make value that other people keep.” -“Deer Hunting with Jesus” Author Joe Bageant (d. 2011) from the documentary “Kingdom of Survival”

What do they mean by "you"? It's quite clear that not everyone can become a billionnaire. Even if 1% of the population on earth were billionnaires, all the resources of the planet would be burnt in a few months. Right wing people just don't understand what the common good is.

I love how guys in America living in a rented trailer, vote to help billionaires, well destroying their own lives thinking one day that could be rich. All Americans have a way better chance of becoming a billionaire if they fund education, health care, and a security net so more can take chances.

Even if we were to grant the (utterly, ludicrously, untrue) assertion that "anybody" can "earn" a billion dollars, not EVERYBODY can do it. IDGAF WHICH person sits atop the pyramid, the problem is that it's pyramid shaped.

That this is the *Ed board* and not under the byline of a single opinion columnist is all the more revolting.

33% of the American oligarchs inherited their wealth, the rest are self-made, given investment money by their well-to-do relatives, or foreign oligarchs came here for low taxes and regulations or came because their country wouldn't put up with their crap. We have the highest amount of billionaires.

Somebody doesn't understand shat AOC said. Like yes. It is possible. Otherwise we would have no billionaires. If you make a billion dollars by designing shoes you stole money from other workers. Its really not that difficult to understand Mehrwert.

i will graciously accept apologies from any of the multiple Washington Post pundits who claimed i was misrepresenting the editorial shift of their publication after it was purchased by Jeff Bezos. i am sure that is coming any day now. correcting the record is so important, after all.

these are all actual headlines from the washington post. you can literally track the rightwing ideological shift over time towards supporting billionaires & transphobia.

"Own a prestigious legacy media company and abandon any principles preventing you from selling it to one of them" Oh, make them pay *society*? No, nothing for that, best we can do is: suffer.

This is reminding me of that slide in Al Gore’s Inconvenient Truth powerpoint that has the scale on it. The planet earth is one platform of the scale, and the other platform has (I think) a pile of gold coins on it? “Sure, the earth looks really nice, but what about all that delicious money???”🙄

If one’s opinion of human potential is expressed in piles of looted cash, then the size of that pile does not matter. The opinion is misguided to begin and hanging more zeroes on it does not make it better.

The only thing that makes Jeff Bezos special is his money. There's zero chance he wants an influx of billionaires taking up space in his lane~

For part of my work, we have a principle of don’t create policy for the exception. Given that your odds of becoming a billionaire are 0.0002%, I’m going out on a limb to say you ain’t becoming a billionaire. But sure let’s create fiscal and tax policy for the 0.0002% of us.

Here’s Maria Bartiromo on how to become a self-made millionaire, in case the Post wants to write this up too. bsky.app/profile/atru...

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Maria Bartiromo: "When I started my career, I put money in my 401k and I was advised, my mother told me, 'match it 100%, whatever your company puts down, match it.' And that's how I got to my first $1 million. I'll say it. That's how I got to become a millionaire."

Even if “you” could “earn” a billion, it’s nearly impossible to do so. And completely impossible without exploiting people/environment or doing crimes—usually both! Before considering if one could, decide if one should Being a billionaire should be looked down upon, as evidence of low character

I think she has a strong belief in our potential as a species. I could care less if she thinks we can all make a billion dollars because we know how to market the latest piece of crap we can most likely live with out. What does that have to do with human potential?

Anybody with a brain who looks at red state policies know Republicans don’t give a fuck about human potential. No childcare, no education, no healthcare. Bigotry, racism, discrimination. The fact that they even measure human potential by net worth shows you these people are soulless and sick.

It’s easier for a camel to walk through the eye of a needle, than a rich man to enter the kingdom of god. Jesus had a low opinion of human potential.

No you can't. No one deserves that kind of money. No one is working a million times harder than the guy who has $1000 in savings. You (meaning not *you*, but a person with a lot of structural advantages) might be able to get control of a billion dollars, but you can't *earn* it.

One big reason why I canceled our subscription: the Bezos bludgeoning of Washington Post journalism seemed to have left intact the smooth-brained pundits in an opinion section that had been problematic for years.

oh I think making smooth-brained contrarian engagement trolling a very forward part of the brand is a key part of both the new NYT and WAPO business models they actively made it worse to generate clicks

As a long time reader of the WP editorial section, my considered opinion is that in the past year or so it has gotten much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much much worse.

I have no problem with someone earning a billion, as long as they pay the expected tax. There are way to many loops holes in the tax code, way to many ways to avoid tax. Solve those issues and billionaires would be a boon to society, not a sink.

She is a Star Trek fan. She understands the potential of the human race. It’s not based on how much you make. It’s how you live your life. Did you make a difference? Elon Musk versus Jonas Salk. Salk didn’t patent the polio vaccine so everyone could have access. Musk is greedy and self serving.

No single person has ever "earned" a billion dollars. At best someone caught a technological wave that propelled them but most just took it from their customers and employees because no one could stop them.

We are living in a country where the wealth gap has grown significantly over the last 40-50 years with (per CBS) the gap being the widest in 3 decades as of Jan. 2026. So no, we don’t have a low opinion of human potential. We just live in the real world.

“The difference between a billionaire and a millionaire is a billion dollars” in other words, will never happen unless you’re a nepo baby. Bezos started Amazon through a $100k loan from his mommy and daddy after all!

I think a few sports stars have legitimately earned a billion dollars during their careers if you count endorsements: 1. Jordan 2. Ronaldo 3. Messi 4. Tiger 5. LeBron 6. Mayweather Everyone else has earned their billion on the backs of others. Athletes have arguable earned it on their talent alone.

These justifiers are either disingenuous or idiots. No one “earns” a billion dollars. That would be putting themselves ahead of humanity’s needs. Also disregarding all of humanity’s many contributions. Workers. Grid. Transportation. Defense. All the ideas & advancements that came before them.

Please specify the opinion pages. The actual reporters, working their butts off and risking the wrath of the goons, just told us the liars are lying about the war.

Growing up is realizing that anything we consider sacred is doomed to fail its reputation/expectations. You can’t convince me Hamilton wasn’t peak American Democracy, but ultimately an empty celebration of a bygone past.

Enduring the Great Depression, defeating Hitler, ending Jim Crow, empowering women and their reproductive freedoms, and gay rights was a really good 80 year run in spite of intermittent setbacks. Since 2016 however, we've gone in reverse. Today's ruling is yet another egregious example.

In Whiteland, sure. In reality, Jim Crow never ended in practice or on paper- police lynch Black and Brown people daily in public. Women's reproductive freedoms were never enshrined. We hired Hitler's SS staff to run NASA. Gay rights is younger than me, and came after Reagan murdered thousands.

normal people get to have anonymous opinions on the internet. if you work for the washington post, you do not get to hide behind the skirts of "editorial board" as a credit name yourself, and if this was written by AI whoever prompt-sturbated this shit out, YOU name yourself

You don't 'earn' a billion dollars. Our laws gift you privileges to take a decent idea (maybe) and multiply it millions of times over and then commodify the money into billions. In no way is that 'earning', except by bastardization of the term.
