This was a one-shot experiment with Claude Fable, with a couple of follow up prompts to get the map editor working as well (that was written in BBC BASIC with an Acorn WIMP interface) - written up here: www.goatly.net/post/2026/10...
Yes! There's a map editor - map packs are stored in the URL of the game itself, so creating and sharing new maps is super easy! I don't think anyone actually made any custom maps back in 1996 - if anyone does today, please share them with me! mikegoatly.github.io/rhft/editor....

Pretty sure this is the first game I played on a home computer at someone's house. ZX Spectrum version though. It looks worse than I remember worldofspectrum.net/item/0001627/

Getting close to launching the new @avaloniaui.net based version of #Chordle on Windows. I've spent time building a headless test suite for common scenarios so I can safely build on it in future - but there's no reason why a headless test suite can't let you visualise what's actually going on!

You may have missed this in the Avalonia 12.0 launch... Our VS Code extension is now completely free. No account needed. No usage restrictions. Download. Install. Develop. avaloniaui.net/vscode/
My new job has required I use Google's Firebase, and in particular Firestore. I've been surprised by the memory consumption of the official emulator, and wondered if I could hack together in .NET that meeds our needs. I still don't know, but this is the result so far: github.com/mikegoatly/F...

Just made this public - github.com/mikegoatly/S... It's rough around the edges and I've lots to do, but this is a much improved version of the proof-of-concept I put together over Christmas. I want to be able to turn instrument recordings to musical scores using only #dotnet!

*or throw out code review for something else. Like prod observaility, automated testing etc. Standout engineers still write concise code with AI assistance as well… but it’s just so tempting to let it rip and push “sloppy code” that solves stuff but is verbose + less maintainable?

LIFTI v7 has just dropped! github.com/mikegoatly/l... There's new query syntax: &! ("And Not") for excluding search results matching test << and >> for anchoring search terms to the start and end of text #dotnet #opensource
There's also support for indexing ReadOnlyMemory and some memory and performance improvements. The documentation has been updated, and I'll be blogging about some of the new features over the next few days, starting today: www.goatly.net/post/2025/11...

A update: Per her last update on GFM, Rebecca's doctors have determined no further treatments are possible, and they will be ceasing life support later tonight. Please make time tonight, to tell her thank you, and that she is loved. It doesn't have to be much.
The Bard's Tale III. Wasteland. Wolfenstein 3D. Jazz Jackrabbit 2. Out Of This World. Baldur's Gate II. Neuromancer. Battle Chess. Rock & Roll Racing. And, let us not forget: Super Noah's Ark 3D! Rebecca's work is everywhere in this industry, and she deserves our support and our love.
Exciting news from the Avalonia team - I hope to be kicking the tyres of this in v12...
We're experimenting with additional rendering backends for Avalonia. SkiaSharp remains the default (and will for years), but we're exploring what GPU-first rendering could bring to the platform. Read about our early experiments: avaloniaui.net/blog/the-fu...
