How many of the genetic associations in previous studies in autoimmune diseases are actually sex-dependent? This study highlights the importance of studying genomics in a sex-aware manner

And even more interestingly (to me at least), we found that some previously described associations of SSc are actually only associated to women! But as sex-bias had not been considered in GWAS before, the higher incidence of SSc in females made it so they were identified as shared SSc risk variants

Doing science requires us to speak 2 different languages: (1) Day science language is a highly precise language for designing & executing experiments; while (2) Night science language uses analogies & anthropomorphizes to give us intuitions about the unknowns we explore. (Night Science recap, Day 4)

Over the course of 2025, UKB researchers were forced to move all of their data analysis to the cloud rather than working with local copies. What was the effect of this move on scientific output? Here is a simple first pass at answering that question.

#Women are underrepresented in academia, especially in #STEMM fields, top institutions & in senior positions. Analysis of millions of biomed & life science articles reveal that female-authored articles spend longer under review than comparable male-authored ones @plosbiology.org 🧪 plos.io/4658FZN

1/ Women scheduled surgery after being told they had rare BRCA1 variants. The genetic test was wrong. University of Exeter analyzed 50,000 samples to find out how often this happens. The results should worry anyone who's downloaded their 23andMe raw data.

Take a look! Useful for quick reference and if you get lost with all the -seq omic technologies 😱

🧬💥 Do the genetics that make you develop a disease also help you survive it? Not much. Our new study in Nature Genetics including 9 disease and 7 biobanks shows: • Susceptibility variants ≠ survival • PRSs for onset weak at predicting progression • Lifespan PRS predicts survival better

Bioinformaticians / computational biologists take note - know where you should take your OS tool chain from and do not introduce backdoors.

Heads up: ignore samtools dot org, similarly minimap2 dot com and likely others. It's owned by a known phishing site and while the binaries they offer look valid currently (but note they may be serving us different binaries to others), that could change. Ie: it's not us (Samtools team)! Be warned
