⚠️New genomic model for #coccolithophore biology: the haploid genome of Calcidiscus leptoporus!
Its genome, resolved alongside six recurrent phycosphere bacteria, reveals a distributed B-vitamin network linking host genomic gaps to microbial capacity.

Not all nuclei are the same. We went to some of biology’s most exceptional nuclei
👉 dinoflagellates with genomes 80× ours
👉 Giardia’s twin nuclei
👉 ciliates carrying two nuclei in one cytoplasm
& asked a simple question: what sets nuclear density?

Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel – awarded the 2026 medicine prize – discovered a remarkable protein, channelrhodopsin, in a single-celled alga.
Hegemann wondered how Chlamydomonas, a single-celled alga, is able to swim towards a light source.

I started translating the announcement into plain English, but got too depressed to continue before I even reached the most pernicious parts in the "full letter" linked.
Collodaria harboring photosymbiotic microalgae are major primary producers in oligotrophic oceans. Stable-isotope labelling revealed distinct roles of phototrophy and osmotrophy, refining our understanding of plankton element-flux.

The host can make B2, B5, B6 and B9, but lacks complete pathways for B1, B3, B7 and B12. Its bacterial partners fill different parts of those gaps—and no single bacterium can provide everything. The vitamin network is distributed across the holobiont.

A 4-month experiment tested that prediction. Without vitamins, long-term growth fell sharply; B1 partly rescued it. Microbiome turnover was driven mainly by growth phase, while vitamins influenced which taxa became enriched. Paper: doi.org/10.1093/isme...

SPECIES 441 - Syracosphaera nodosa
STAGE: Protists
MEDIUM: Arches Paper. Chromatek watercolor, Sakura pen
S. nodosa is a marine calcifying single celled phytoplankton species. It has little radiating plates from the center, but it ended up looking like sliced kiwi! 😅
