Just saw a Tesla drive the wrong way on a road with a Do Not Enter sign. I maintain that Tesla drivers are the worst drivers on the road.

Interesting way to "block" Reader Mode from going around a paywall. Reverse the text and then fix it with JavaScript. Wonder if it is still like this when paying.

X has made a comeback with some communities, namely AI and tech, but it is not Twitter of old. On X, users have been spreading the name of a woman they think is Cornell's Jane Doe. One particular post doxed a woman's address and phone numbers and was viewed 1.4 million times.

Almost got run over by a truck while on my bike yesterday because the driver decided to merge into me. The annoying part wasn't really nearly getting run over, it's needing to bike the rest of the way home while my adrenaline was pumping. Not a fun time.

Building new software has always been the fun part. Fixing and maintaining existing software is most of the job though and that's the part that sucks.

All the posturing from councilmembers on the budget is funny because they literally can just change it. It's funny but also sad. They're just doing it for political brownie points.

I LOVE SEATTLE

Mayor Katie B. Wilson@mayor.seattle.gov

We live in an incredible place. I am proud that our city was recently named one of the top five in the world by Oxford Economics using the five criteria of Economics, Human Capital, Quality of Life, Environment, and Governance.

Guy who made the CivicTide website seems to have had his brain microwaved by AI. Won't be surprised if during this budget season we get clips of people quoting the site and saying some wacky stuff.

Growing SPD to match Denver, SF, or Boston's officer numbers would grow SPD's budget to be anywhere from 31-39% of the bugdet (from 24%). Considering the budget deficit this would mean that the rest of the budget would need to shrink anywhere from 15-24%. Nearly a 25% cut is insane!

Step 1. Mayor Katie Wilson says "I am announcing a public safety plan next week." Step 2. Business groups preemptively respond with a critical press release. Step 3 .Seattle Times stenography, baby! (They've been milking those unflattering photos from the same press conference for a month now).

If Wilson had this kind of history the Seattle Times would be shouting this from the heavens. Kang shares ideology with the opinion board though so they don't care.

"But," you might say, "Julie Kang was just the owner of the bank! She might not know about these repeated violations & misconduct. It's not like she was the Audit Chair in charge of regulation and compliance--" Narrator: Julie Kang was the *Audit Chair in charge of bank regulation and compliance.*

Note that the country is so safe that fights have to land in Cap-Haïtien rather than the capital because gangs control the main airport and shoot at planes.

The situation in Haiti is terrifying. On Sunday, 150 gunmen swept down on a town to kill, rape, loot, and burn. 22 people were executed in a churchyard. 52 were taken hostage. Stephen Miller mockingly says Haiti is safe and ICE just sent its second deportation flight this month; with kids on board.

Is there a local news outlet that has gotten better on the ground coverage of the new bus lane than this? Put a TV crew on a 8 bus, ask Metro if drivers on the route feel like it's faster It seems like all they want to cover is theoretical complaints from car drivers.

Holy shit we’re flying like a bat out of hell. #Acceler8

I do wonder if the AI code maximalists inspect the code frontier models produce. I literally use Opus 5 and Sol 5.6, all day, every day, at work and it still produces incorrect things sometimes. Letting incorrect info into a repo quickly becomes garbage in -> garbage out for future code.

It would be ironic if in the quest for artificial general intelligence, instead of AIs maximizing "paperclips", it was select humans devoting as much energy and money as possible into the goal of AGI only to still never reach the goal.

While this sounds like a lot the city settled with a different officer who sued for $950k and former Chief Diaz's suit hasn't been resolved yet. $700k for a police chief to go away with no lawsuit is cheap relatively speaking.

Seattle police chief Shon Barnes is getting $700,000 in a settlement for leaving the department, PubliCola has confirmed.

ROUTE 8 and DENNY WAY: starting on Saturday, buses and cars merging onto Interstate 5 won’t compete for the same lane of Denny Way. To keep traffic flowing, people driving to I-5 south from eastbound Denny Way will turn right on Boren Ave and left on Howell St instead of using Yale Ave.

The city still needs our leaders to work together to deal with what's next. Trying to close out the Seattle Center mass shooting and we have Seafair this weekend. That's not to mention all the other stuff going on in Seattle. Congrats to Interim Chief Sayles, he has a lot of work on his plate.

I very much support Mayor Wilson so it upsets me when I hear things like CM Juarez say she has no confidence in the mayor. CM Juarez gone at the end of this year but she's also been in Seattle government for a long time. Even if they disagree on things CMs should be in the loop on major decisions.

From other reporting sounds like Mayor Wilson has been thinking of removing former Chief Barnes for a while. It's a good call to do so. The timing probably isn't perfect but if you want to fire someone at such a high level can the timing ever be perfect?

Probably a very intense day for the Mayor's office. As a random member of the public I obviously don't get to see how the sausage gets made in terms of these decisions but it's not great that more than one councilmember told the media that Mayor Wilson didn't reach out to give a heads up.

The Mayor is the head of Seattle and can make decisions as she sees fit within her powers under city law but at least from what I see and hear she also needs to do more to bring the council along. From my perspective a mayor-council communication breakdown was a chunk of Durkan's downfall.

I'm a little surprised Mayor Wilson was attacked for even considering not keeping Chief Barnes on as SPD chief and now is getting attacked for keeping him on while his main residence is in the Chicago area. I guess I'm not that surprised, just really annoyed.

Just to remind people Chief Barnes was selected solely by former Mayor Harrell, there was no public vetting. He's been traveling to Chicago the entire time he's been in the job (see this article from @publicola.bsky.social dated July 9, 2025) which was the whole final year of Harrell's tenure.

publicola.comIn First Four Months, Seattle's New Police Chief Spent Most Weekends Out of Town - PubliColaBy Erica C. Barnett Seattle Police Chief Shon Barnes, selected to lead SPD by Mayor Bruce Harrell earlier this year,…

In Phoenix for a bachelor party and every group picture we asked to be taken was taken vertically. Apparently horizontal pictures are dead and I didn't know.

Crazy that between Harrell and Wilson, Wilson will need to be the responsible one with the budget.

I'm surprised to see this being reported elsewhere is "council funds school meals AND food vouchers, yay." Paying for additional things out of the general fund means cutting other things—and this council doesn't like to make cuts (especially to police). And there's already a $175 million deficit.
