The main conceptual difference between “STEM” and “science”in general seems to be the degree to which a discipline can be used to accumulate power, as opposed to strictly truth-seeking.

The only sciences left out of “STEM” seem to be those (such as sociology) which tend to either be useless for, or actively critical of, the accumulation of power. Whereas non-truth-seeking positions can gain the moniker “STEM” by being sufficiently useful for power accumulation (tech CEO).

If a shark attacked me in the open ocean I would die, but if we were on land, I would be able to defeat the shark in combat. From the Mean Value Theorem, it follows that there exists a water level in which the shark and I would be evenly matched. I hypothesize 2-3 feet, depending on the shark

The pages of ‘Dr. Suess’s ABC’ vary wildly in quality. “Itchy itchy Ichabod:” classic. A heart-wrenching plight. “Kangaroo and kite:” basic. Derivative. You’re a doctor, and you should have done better.

I have too many thoughts on this book to fit into a single bluesk, but if there’s interest, I may post a ranked top-26 list and/or scathing no-holds-barred takedown of the worst offenders

If we just look at raw impact, Timothée Chalamet may have done more to raise the esteem of ballet and opera in the public consciousness than anyone else this century. So technically he is a true patron of the arts, and a hero

I have a new story out!

In the Jonas Brothers’ hit single “Year 3000,” which takes place in the year 3,000, we learn that Nick Jonas’s “great, great, great granddaughter is doing fine.” This means that she’s been alive for centuries longer than a normal human lifespan. I think she’s no longer fully human. Something’s wrong

Maybe I’ve been too absorbed lately in the weeds of think-pieces and comments dismissing out-of-hand the idea that computer systems could in principle have anything close to mental states, but this preprint feels like a breath of fresh air. I’d recommend it to anyone interested in this sort of thing

a draft paper (for an invited talk at AAAI next month) with a philosophical analysis of work on mechanistic interpretability, with special attention to methods for propositional interpretability. arxiv.org/abs/2501.15740

Another reminder to consider “The Best Version of Yourself” for this poll :)

Clarkesworld@clarkesworldmagazine.com

The nomination phase of our annual readers' poll closes in under six hours. Participation is up over last year and it's a tight race. Many stories and covers are separated by a single vote.

If any one of my followers liked "The Best Version of Yourself" enough to nominate it for this poll, I would appreciate it a lot. Also there's many other good stories to vote for, but I'm keeping my ballot a secret so as to not influence anyone beyond that

Everyone hates wet socks, but if you step a preexisting wet foot onto a cloth, it doesn’t feel as bad — even though it’s the same sensation. The real loss comes because the sock gives an expectation of safety, which is then shattered. In this essay, I will

Current fiction length categories are fine, but they don’t go far enough. Here’s my proposed changes: 2k-8k wrds: Short Story -> Novelita 8k-18k: Novelette 18k-50k: Novella 50k-150k: Novel 150k-500k: Novelaga 500k-5m: Novelungous 5m-50m: Novelosaurus 50m+: Kilonovel, Meganovel, Giganovel, etc.

This isn’t getting as much traction as it deserves, so just to clear things up: “booksky” sounds like “bookski.” Also, the app itself rhymes with “brewski.” Hope that helps get people on board

I made this account a week ago, and figured it's about time I actually posted something. I'm an author with one (so far) published work, in @clarkesworldmagazine.com. It's a scifi dystopia exploring themes of self-improvement and neurodivergence. Read it here: clarkesworldmagazine.com/collier_07_24/
