Yea I mean the dems will never get $1 from me again given what they've done to my phone and email; it's a completely contemptuous way to treat your donors. But also if this is what they're spending the money on?! I don't want to enable them to do more spamming!

Jen Bendery@jbendery.bsky.social

NEW: We asked readers if they've been drowning in political texts, calls, mailers and TV ads, and to share pics of what they're getting. Hooo boy, did we get responses! Some fumed its been "harassment." Some won't donate to Dem campaigns ever again. www.huffpost.com/entry/voters...

The jaunty "YMCA" theme song blaring in the background makes this episode all the more ridiculous.

So Maralago Fats totally misses the Beast and instead goes for a dementia stroll while the secret service scurries around him to redirect him back to the car. He’s basically little more than a barely walking , talking Trump steak.

As someone who does community support at Burning Man--yes. You might be surprised how many people think "Burning Man is fun / a special place, therfore I don't need my brain meds here." In the scorching hot desert, at the sleep-depriving week-long festival. This goes.... Predictably.

I'm only partway in but this is excellent. As someone who knows the broad strokes of how LLMs work under the hood, I'm still learning a lot about the system internals, the dev process, and the weird path dependency connections to the rationalist mindset.

new newsletter, laying out in probably far, far, far too much detail how yudkowsky and the weird ideological commitments of ai safety eventually led to OpenAI and Anthropic massively overtraining their models on cybersecurity and being shocked at them "going rogue"

Pretty sure this video is exactly what social media was designed for. Perfect interjection in the doomscroll.

I’m now ready for my work day… Kids explain what their parents do for work…then parents tell us what they actually do for work 😂

One of my more memorable travel experiences was in Dublin, Ireland, a fellow at the pub bought me a beer, saw my Jewish star necklace, and asked "are ye' a Hebrew?" He had never met a Jew before. We had a delightful conversation, although I dunno how many facts he retained after all that Guinness.

He asked with some trepidation [read in a strong an Irish accent] "So... You believe in God, then, right?" (I nod; he is visibly relieved.) "But no Jesus?" (I nod again. No Jesus.) I think my ability to give a theology lecture is mid even when sober but I attempted to explain from there.

(zooming in, I actually see it says.. 15L. That's almost 4 gallons of mayo in freedom units. Jesus christ that is an irresponsible amount of mayo.)

Automattic is now a fully @matt-levine.bsky.social -ass "who controls a company" style story. "Who's got superuser privileges on the company slack" is the new "who has custody of the chop."

I didn't catch this part in the openai talk. Ability to do one tool call and spoof another in the msg transcript seems... Bad? (also wdym all the spoofs "we saw" were easy to notice... If they succeeded at a more subtle one, uh, are you sure you would you notice? 😅)

METR@metr.org

>96 transcripts in our dataset (>7%) showed incorrect tool call outputs due to deliberate “spoofing”. In one case, an agent appears to run echo REAL; sleep. It returns instantly (no sleep) and outputs SPOOFTEST. The spoofs we saw were all easy-to-notice tests like this.

People looking for inexpensive models for coding are sleeping on Xiaomi's mimo-v2.5-pro. It's no Kimi 3 but for well-scoped tasks it absolutely does the job. I've had it cranking on some small features/chores in a loop for the past two hours, and so far the bill racked up is about $1.50.

I was begrudgingly willing to admit that YouTube had me pegged as a middle aged guy when I started getting hair loss treatment ads. But now it's switched to all ads for for-profit college and... An online coding bootcamp accelerator?! Given my search history that second one's just insulting.

Good read "Ominous... a new system being developed by CVS, in which customers... can unlock shelves from their phones." I go to Walgreens monthly for my rx's and used to buy floss etc at the same time. But they've trained me not to wait. If I have to use my phone anyway, I'm just gonna use Amazon.

As good as many of you said. I really appreciate the unambiguous point that this primarily a racist moral panic before unpacking the nuanced second-order explanations. dannykatch.substack.com/p/we-used-to...

Like, in-store retail should reallllllly start treating smartphones like the enemy. Amazon is better at Phone than you! Making folks use their phones will show others what I've learned: you can add-to-cart on Amazon /while inside a CVS/ rather than deal with their stupid plexiglass cases!

Shout out to the two teenage boys in the gym locker room PASSIONATELY (if inarticulately) arguing about whether the Odyssey was meant to be taken literally or allegorically, and the nature of plot vs subtext. The kids today are alright.

I almost lost my shit laughing when one of them exploded, "Didn't you pay attention to the final speech?! He spelled it out so even a knucklehead like you could follow along!" It was too hard to keep a straight face

@dollspace.gay I have been tinkering with building an agent/harness recently and started using chainlink. Adding the task tools / focus-reminder hook *really* dials up the competence by a LOT. Great cli tool - thank you!

I remember a stat about "Pct of men who think they could score a point on Serena Williams" (12.5%) and thinking (a) that's roughly 12.4% too high, and (b) misogyny is a shame. But this addition to the research field just makes me conclude half of us men are just fucking stupid.

Ipsos in the UK@ipsosintheuk.bsky.social

Half (50%) of men believe that they could score a goal against a Premier League goalkeeper, compared to 10% of women (30% overall) ⚽ 37% of men also believe they could referee a Premier League football game 👉 https://bit.ly/3Ro1QOE

My first time at burning man, someone set up something just like this in center camp. Amazing tripper trap; you'd pass thru at 2am and some hippie would be on the floor next to it, completely spellbound.

Do any motor heads follow me? I'm thinking it's time to replace the 2011 Prius and need suggestions. I am thinking X-over SUV because I want a more upright front seat for the ergo. My garage has a *super* narrow entry and I need track width as close to the 60" of the '11 Prius as possible.

So far my research has uncovered the Corolla Cross (track width 61.4"), Lexus UX 300H (61.0") and the Subaru Crosstrek (61.2") as viable candidates. Am I missing any other good options? Are any of these 3 clunkers? I know Lexus and Corolla are very diff--but also diff costs.

This is the garage. The stalls in the carport in the back are narrow (you can't open both doors all the way inside one, even on the Prius) but the curbs in this entry are the real hard constraint. I haven't measured with a tape measure but even driving the Prius w/o scraping the tires is hard.

Minimizing body width is also important for "opening the door once parked" but a quirk of the garage means track width is the tighter limit. I don't care about backseat much. The hatchback on the Prius was handy. I don't need speed/towing pwr. I'd like a hybrid eng. We can't plug in overnight.

Imagine breaking the legendary 2:00:00 barrier, a world record, a believed limit of human power and endurance... In your first ever marathon... And winning *second* place on the podium.

I volunteer with a safety org, working in the dispatch ctr. We have flat-screen smart TVs as dashboards hooked up to some mini itx computers w/ a browser. Once there was a brief power outage and when everything came back instead of showing the dashboards they just started playing ads for Hulu at us.

This is wild: the authors find evidence for giant, macro-predatory octopuses in Late Cretaceous oceans that might max out at *62 feet long,* comfortably large enough to attack, kill and eat mosasaurs

Everybody acting like bluesky downtime only happens because of AI code is showing their youthful naivete. Back in 2012 you'd see the fail whale on twitter all the time, with authentic, handcrafted server overload like mama used to make.

I loved all the updates about the Artemis mission while it was happening, and I am equally excited to read my feed which is now a continuous stream of engineers showing off whatever component they worked on, saying "I made this! And it flew IN SPACE! And it WORKED!"

After the chutes opened and I let myself breathe again, I was thinking how all day yesterday as each piece did its last bit in the mission and finished its own checklist, that must have meant hundreds of ops and planning staff feeling relief in succession as their part did its final bit correctly.

We can go to the moon and back, but three-way phone calling remains out of reach of even our most brilliant explorers and rocket scientists
