“The governing standard is 28 U.S.C. § 455, which applies to every federal judge including Supreme Court justices. Three of its subsections matter here, and a judge only needs one of them to trigger the recusal obligation. Roberts triggers all three.” cmarmitage.substack.com/p/the-chief-...

Story time: During undergrad I once earned 2 / 30 on a bioseparations lab report. While that in itself should not be surprising to those that know me, there was only the grade and one comment: "This could have been a very good lab report...but it wasn't."

Trying to keep a constructive lens on feedback is infuriatingly hard. Trying to organize my comments to be useful to the authors is breaking my inattentive ADHD brain. I get up and pace a lot. But I keep coming back to that lab report.

Why do I randomly bring this up? I was asked to review a manuscript looking at localized drug delivery to improve bone fractures - an approach and cause that is near and dear to my heart & face, respectively. The work is a mess. I am sorely tempted to give it a 2/30

As chemical engineers, we already had lab the other 3 days of the week. It was hard to justify the effort for the 2 credits that hit our report card but we tried. I went on to earn a PhD in biomedical engineering at R1 public ivy and my lab partner is a peds radiologist.

That is to say we persevered and succeeded. But how much time - ours & our teachers & TA's - did we waste because of that squandered opportunity to invest time improving our approach (vs just giving us the answers). That's why 20+ years later I still think of this lab report often.

My lab partner and I howled in laughter but then were almost angry - we had been on the right track but where did we veer off? How? It was 💯 unhelpful to us improving our lab report and data analytical skills. This lab was 2 credits = 6 hrs in lab (2 x 3 h). Reality was 40+ hrs.

Don’t let them whitewash Charlie Kirk. He was a racist, transphobe and hater. He bullied others relentlessly for their speech. He undermined education and democracy. He advocated for guns and for accepting murder with guns. But in a democratic society, no one should be killed with guns.

Schrödinger's humanities: Simultaneously moribund and dying in a world in which students increasingly only want to major in STEM and business, and also so powerful that they can inculcate dangerous, subversive ideologies like gender theory and post-colonialism in impressionable young people.
