In 55 countries, wind and solar generated more electricity than coal in 2025. 34 of them have near-zero coal left. Spain crossed over in 2009. The UK in 2016. The USA last year. Different grids, different politics, same pattern. Want more of this? Sign up here janrosenow.substack.com

New veggie garden! 1/? 🌱 #gardening I'm starting a new veggie garden, so last fall I smothered a section of lawn. I had a lot of junk laying around I was able to use before buying anything new. Here I took down an old playset and used it fenceposts. The pavers were also left over from prev owners.

3/? I also quite proud of how this gate turned out! Also made from stuff I had laying around, besides the hinges and latch. I've still got plenty of wood from that playset, I think I will be turning it into a compost bin.

4/? The plants themselves are coming along too. Here's what I'm planning for the first year. I'm starting broccoli and tomatoes indoors and direct sowing the rest.

2/? The deer fence itself was also reused from an old fenced-off pen in my backyard that must have been a garden itself long ago. I'm also putting in drip irrigation. This will be automated with Home Assistant, I got a Z-Wave relay box and transformer to hook up to the valves

The boneset is a hit, and very easy to grow. I planted it this year and it's very healthy with just a bit of supplemental watering at the start. It's been ignored by rabbits and deer as well. It's attracting a lot more flies and wasps than bees or butterflies, not that that's a bad thing!

This is why I’m optimistic about energy innovation: It took the global solar industry 68 years to reach 1 terawatt (TW) of installed power, from the first commercial silicon solar cell in 1954 to 2022. The next 1TW was delivered in only two additional years from 2023 to 2024.

If you plant it, they will come! I counted six monarch caterpillars on my swamp milkweed today, and one looked like it was in the process of making a cocoon. Also, did you know that swamp milkweed has flowers that smell like vanilla? 🌱 #NativeGardening #Gardening

First harvest of the season. I'm a pretty lazy gardener so I love perennial crops. Blueberries and raspberries on the way too, and hoping to plant a couple apple trees this summer 🌱 #gardening

Walz: "This cannot be the norm. It cannot be the way that we deal with our political differences. Now is the time for us to recommit to the core values of this country ... Talk to a neighbor rather than arguing. Debate an issue. Shake hands. Find common ground. This is who Melissa Hortman was."

Blooming Wild Ginger! The flower of this native plant is easy to miss as it's on the ground, hidden by its leaves. It's pollinated ants and other crawling insects, and is hardy and easy to grow 🌱 #gardening #nativeplants

Moved most of my #homeassistant automations to node-red, and really liking the result. I have never liked the YAML syntax and the GUI way to edit it is annoying too. Laying it out like this is soooo nice.

Today is Darwin Day, in celebration of the birthday of Charles Darwin. In my view, he is the most important scientist in history. He was also a delightful writer, and wrote books across a broad range of biology. They are very readable. 1/3

Last year was the first year I was really able to garden, after renting apartments for years. But it was a busy year, so I didn't plan, just threw stuff into the ground and observed Among the things I learned is that you need ~four rows of pollination for proper corn. I planted four.. stalks 🌱

We're not going shopping today, are we. So we might as well go for a walk in the trees. And while we are there, we might as well learn about them and even hug a few. The big chinkapin oak is known as "The Great God Tree."
