1/5 "Characterizing the Global Polycrisis: A Systematic Review of Recent Literature" - newly published in Annual Review of Env. & Resources (Rakowski & Schaan et al. 2025)! We harvested all papers on the global polycrisis and analysed a) what it is, b) its components, c) drivers, and d) solutions.

Interesting, I couldn't find any information about the respective vote in the @euparliament.bsky.social pages. Instead I found a rather opposite statement. Seems like stating A and voting B.

Scientists: join an open letter on pesticides! Pesticide over-use has grave impacts on human health & the environment, yet the Commission proposed a deregulation (aka "Omnibus proposal on Food and Feed Safety"). Scientists call for a rigorous assessment prior to next steps: tinyurl.com/y5db7vsy

Habitat loss is the biggest threat to the world’s wildlife. Nearly all habitat loss is driven by the expansion of agriculture: we chop down forests and convert wild grasslands into farmland to grow crops and raise livestock.

I'm informed that the number of signatories more than doubled since the call last week - but can we reach 3000? We also lack the voices of scientists form E, SE and S Europe. Please translate and forward the call to other languages to maximise reach ahead of Parliamentary discussions!

I'm shocked and saddened by this sudden loss. Sepp has been a central pillar in so much that has been happening recently, such as the successful fight for the EU's Nature Restoration Regulation.

IPBES@ipbes.net

We mourn the loss of an exceptional scientist and one of the most effective and powerful international voices for nature of recent generations, Josef “Sepp” Settele. Sepp was a pillar of IPBES’s success throughout its existence. He was a champion for better-informed policy for people and nature.

Yes, facts and evidence are important. Science too. Yes, misinformation is a problem. But notably, biases in people's knowledge and opinions are not evolving out of the blue.

On average, the Dutch think that 20% of the people here is Muslim (it's 5%). They overestimate our income tax rate by 28%. They think the number of homicides is on the rise (it's falling). And that agriculture takes 19% of our land area (it's 60%). And they have strong opinions on all of the above.

When a poor CAP reform is on the table which defends the worst parts while cutting on what works, not much is left to save. Interestingly, I hear the wish to cancel the CAP mostly from AfD members, whereas most stakeholders we meet do prefer a CAP that works - for people, nature and healthy food.

When people say ''I have lots of butterflies in my garden'', it's useful to get a quantitative estimate, in a standardized way. Example: At friends' garden (Alps near Granoble) I counted >50 individuals, 8 spp in a 15 minute count. Try the ButterflyCount app, you can now register sites too!

It's always a joy to meet good friends, both humans and non-humans, in nature. Here's one of my favourite, the Chalkhill Blue (Lysandra coridon, Silbergrüne Bläuling). Rare in many parts of Germany, but abundant in the Alps.

The European Parliament will soon decide on its path for the CAP reform. Will they adopt a dangerous CAP proposal, or can they find a way to retain (or even expand and improve) what works? Watch our YouTube film and our plea for policymakers here: www.agroecology-transect.org/toolkit-reso...

I am honored to be one of the co-authors of @shawan-chowdhury.bsky.social's excellent paper, pulling together experts from so many countries to assess range shifts in butterflies across the globe. Great work, though worrying outcomes. More to come!

Unglaublich.

Malte Kreutzfeldt@mkreutzfeldt.bsky.social

No surprise. Governments that seek to maximise profits for the few, by all means, won't let anything stand on their way - be it nature, peoples' lives and wellbeing, or our future. Will the Albanian demonstrations expand? I'm looking forward to see, when the ''enough is enough'' moment comes.

My talk at @scbeurope.bsky.social Only 10-15% of the EU's cattle herd is needed to graze every biodiversity-rich field there is. Most cattle never set hoof on pasture. They're fed grain, packed onto fertilized monocultures. The solution isn't more grazing. It's fewer animals, better raised.

Guy Pe'er reposted

My talk at @scbeurope.bsky.social - 2 Put every EU cow on pasture and you'd need more land, more emissions, more imported crops from elsewhere. Too many animals for the land we have. The fix isn't more grazing — it's less and better. #Agroecology #LivestockStrategy

At #ECCB2026 we speak with concern about #FoodSecurity due to heat, droughts, pollinators' loss, soil erosion, etc. Meanwhile at X, DG Agri happily anounces a promising year for... oilseed, dairy, pigmeat, poultry. @ec.europa.eu didn't u shout food security? Can't u take your own claims seriously?

When politicians and policies fail, i.e. when upscaling of solutions is impossible, outscaling is an excellent alternative - namely replicating what works, instead of awaiting someone else to help. Same might be needed for #agroecology and, more broadly, sustainable agrifood systems.

Looking at the EU Stress Test on the Birds and Habitats Directives: Merely 11% of respondents <30 year old. Is it poor familiarity with EU policies? Or law awareness of what the Commission means when they say "simplification"? Hey, youngsters, it's about the quality of YOUR future.
