Trans Technologies is available now! My book examines how technology creates new possibilities for transgender people, and how trans experiences, in turn, create new possibilities for technology. "An absolute must-read for anyone that cares about technology and trans liberation." - Alex Hanna

We have a stellar lineup of "actors" for the AI Powder play at #CSCW2026! I'll be announcing our cast gradually leading up to the performance. To start, we have @michaelannephd.bsky.social playing Dr. Putnam, a trauma surgeon who uses AI Powder to "heal" his patients.

First was “Trans Technologies” by @haimson.bsky.social. This is a unique, insightful book, using a critical studies and HCI lens to examine different trans technologies and the thoughts of their creators. Highly recommend Full review: bookwyrm.social/user/bwaber/... (2/5)

"Just sprinkle some AI on it..." We're staging a live PLAY🎭 at #CSCW2026 and looking for amateur actors - no experience needed! It's based on AI Powder, our speculative fiction piece on AI techno-solutionism (forthcoming in Catalyst), paired with an academic panel. Reply/message if interested!

Also finished Trans Technologies by @haimson.bsky.social (2025). Not a trans history book, but relevant for a peripheral argument I’m making in my comps exam. That said, incredibly cool to have a book that provides perhaps the most comprehensive list of trans technologies.

Researchers can use this scale on surveys to measure algorithmic harm overall, or its subscales (algorithmic stigma, algorithmic privacy harms, and tangible algorithmic harms), across different systems, contexts, and populations.

To no one's surprise, we found that minoritized groups (transgender, nonbinary, mixed race, disabled, and/or neurodivergent people) report higher levels of algorithmic harm than others.

Monday morning @ #DIS2026 in the Intimate Data, Consent, & Harm session, Aloe DeGuia presents our paper: "Bridging Trans Community Knowledge with Verified Information: Design Considerations for Patient-Surgeon Digital Communication Platforms for Gender-Affirming Surgery" dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/...

We considered how an online communication platform could support both surgeons and trans people seeking surgery. The two groups hold values in tension (information sharing, risk, and reputation), but also values in alignment (information accuracy, transparency, and communication efficiency).

Our design implications for future online information sharing platforms that balance patients' and surgeons' needs involve surgeon-verified information, surgeon anonymity, credential verification, searchable FAQs, and integrated community knowledge.

Go Denny Starks AGAIN! They just presented our paper (with Aloe Deguia, Tawanna Dillahunt, and @haimson.bsky.social), Navigating Safety and Technology: The Everyday Safety Labor of Transgender Black, Indigenous, and People of Color in the United States at #CHI2026 in Barcelona.

"Navigating Safety and Technology: The Everyday Safety Labor of TBIPOC in the US" introduces the concept of safety labor: the emotional and cognitive work of managing misrecognition, assessing risk, and downplaying discomfort to maintain self-preservation.

"Safety With Community: Technologies of Care, Connection, Collective Safety, and Mutual Aid for TBIPOC" shows how designing for TBIPOC safety requires shifting toward community-centered tech and non-tech approaches that prioritize lived experiences, mutual aid, and collective joy.
