I think this is a very good analysis of why we jumped at the chance to adapt Tyrant Philosophers into an RPG. And more news on that soon by the way. We’ve been very busy!

An Unofficial Hugo Book Club Blog@hugobookclub.bsky.social

The Grave Of Perfection by @aptshadow.bsky.social is full of a sly wit that keeps bringing to mind Discworld. Not as comedic, but the same joy in language Rincewind might not find himself at home on the streets of Ilmar, but he would at least understand the wry irony of the local Maric patois.

The model isn’t done yet - still some painting to do, and decals, and an aerial, and fixing the canopy fit, and a last pass of chipping and breakdown. But it’s never too soon to practice the set up. Gonna be a squeeze to fit this Ma.K Camel onto an A3 backdrop but I think we can do it.

Something else to think about instead of moving boxes is this: It’s a challenge to communicate easily and effectively to customers that many links in the chain of “norms” are being broken right now.

Just taken delivery of our first pallet in a while. I was using a kind of just-in-time dripfeed from my warehouse friends. But that’s not viable in late 2026, when parcel couriers don’t want to move a consignment of 4 boxes, and now charge too much per box. so pallets it is. 1/?

And ok, thems the breaks and crying won’t fix it. Buuuut communicating just how difficult it now is to send a parcel into the EU, or how random customs can be in the US is a skill unto itself. And when you’re good at making books about an elf, you might not be super skilled in comms strategy?

But the trick is being able to communicate these really long chains of dominoes in a way that doesn’t make us or our partners look incompetent, or just bores the heck out of customers who just don’t need that level of detail. I had someone recently ask “why don’t you just post the book?”

We’re all used to a world where you *can* post things. It makes sense. Get book, pack it, post it. At a post office. Use an international service. But it doesn’t work like that anymore. We’re in basically a time of international trade conflict where countries are closing their doors to free trade.

The pace of change is fast, & businesses that we rely on to deliver games are either changing or going bust. That comes with a potentially HUGE time overhead. Recently a forgivable mistake by a partner, in a time when things are changing so rapidly, has cost me dozens and dozens of hours of work.

Because of changes with tariffs and import duties are happening at a very fast pace, simple paperwork errors, or a failure to double check stuff can cause huge ripples. I’m not mad about it. I get exactly how these things happen and I also make loads of mistakes as a human being.

So while it’s bloody grim out there just now, and we’re all caught between huge forces we can’t control, and all the rest, this is the same as it ever was - it’s the stuff that made us want to do this which will keep us going. Creativity innit? Good luck, friends. And thanks Jamie at GMS. The mvp.

This kind of agility and resilience to the shenanigans of a hostile logistics environment is gonna be key for survival of small creative presses. And having partners who can respond and change very quickly is massively important. Having a way things are done matters a less than an eye on outcomes.

I’m not hopeful for the future I have to be honest. I’m seeing peers shut up shop because it’s just too hard. But what we DO have as small presses is creativity, our small size so we can effect change quickly, and a community of connections that help each other.

Good morning #Nerdlings! Take good care of yourselves today, just like this smol Gobbo in the big city. Be kind or be fierce, stay dangerous and stand your ground! You got this! #MotivationalGrot #JHBackdrops #WarhammerCommunity

I know that thousands of you are on tenterhooks awaiting the pdf launch of the Maskwitches GM’s Companion, but we can’t launch it while Drivethru is performing essential maintenance. And it’s more important that everyone’s data is safe than you get the next slice of psychedelic Mesolithic goodness.

Nice.

Here’s a pic of the rubble ruin pieces I painted. The ground is also a resin slab, painted a bit ago. I want it all to have a green, mossy wet vibe. Here’s my regular, woman in gladiator helm, to show it off with a Minotaur. All from @fenrisgames.com and backdrop @handiworkgames.bsky.social

Maskwitches ENnies Emporium Backers - check your associated DrivethruRPG account because there you will find The Maskwitches GM's Companion! Tis done! And will be on sale to the rest of the world tomorrow! #maskwitches

Obviously I'm all in, and I've been proud to some unexpected levels in seeing our backdrops appearing in some of the stories Annie has been making with the new figures. Not in the thumbnail here of course. (Not in the thumbnail here of course. Ignore that Some model or something? Whatever)

You know how @fromthemorgue.bsky.social did amazing things with FitD for a|state 2E and equally amazing things with D&D 5E for FiveEvil? Well he's also doing amazing things with the Cold City/Hot War 2E mechanics for @handiworkgames.bsky.social's adaptation of @aptshadow.bsky.social's books.

Had a few folks ask, & no that is not a backprojected image. It is not applied or enhanced with any post production technique, beyond a touch of colour grading. An IKEA cabinet strip light hidden behind the scenery, pointing upwards onto the backdrop book, and lighting *across* the scene does it.

I really like that technique of up lighting the backdrop book, because it does make it appear very luminous and cinematic. But I’m also dead into “in camera” effects as much as possible because it’s cool and feels both handmade and sort of rustically clever?

Nice.

My daughter has started putting up Halloween decorations, so it’s time I took some photos of the undead I painted last month. Here’s a @badsquiddogames.bsky.social undead shield maiden with a @handiworkgames.bsky.social backdrop 👻🎃 #miniatures #wargaming #jhbackdrops #badsquiddogames #nerdlings
