As part of the 2020 Nintendo Gigaleak, an email from Miyamoto to Rare was discovered outlining an idea for a change in Donkey Kong's character for his first fully 3D platforming game. This concept was ultimately scrapped, but the idea may have contributed to giving DK a weapon.

In a recent interview, Shigeru Miyamoto shared cut content from Bananza that could return someday. "There was a lot that didn't end up in the game, but nothing goes unused forever. There was an idea from pre-production to give Donkey Kong a tesla cannon and send him to the moon." Source: @poop
