our 5-year-old twins turn into very different horror film villains when they catch a cold. Twin 2 goes pale and lies in bed in a pitch-dark room occasionally calling out in a rasping guttural voice. Twin 1 becomes an amorphous slime monster secreting mucus everywhere.

took my 13yo son out to lunch today, just the two of us because his mum and sisters went to see a show, and it was so nice just talking with him about his social life, random stuff, etc. so proud of the compassionate young man he's becoming

I also made a psy-techno track that samples David Chalmers #PhilosophySky hanehtutmaung.bandcamp.com/track/phenom...

I've finally set up a Bandcamp account for my electronic music. here's a breakbeat hardcore track that samples Imre Lakatos saying "hard core". #PhilosophySky hanehtutmaung.bandcamp.com/track/theore...

Composing the “impossible” canon turns the artwork into an argument with audible premises. Counterpoint does philosophy here because the constraint can answer the claim, measure by measure.

back home after 2 days away at a teaching gig and found that my 5yo daughters had made me this 🥹

my first evening out without the family in over 4 months and this is how I chose to spend it. something about me that might not be apparent from my online presence is that I am painfully introverted

bliss

I walked past Iris Murdoch's old house in Oxford today. a commemorative blue plaque was put up there a few years ago, but alas it's no longer visible because the property went into private ownership earlier this year 😞

I just took a photograph from the outside and then left because I didn't want a repeat of this incident:

ACAB includes cops who don't know history of philosophy. I trespassed private land to photograph this building where John Locke taught Anthony Ashley Cooper. when the cops arrived I said "do you know whose fault it is that this is private land? John Locke's, that's whose". the cops looked confused.

I'm back in Oxford to teach on the Philosophy, Psychiatry, and Mental Health module for the MSt in Practical Ethics. as always, it looks like an exciting schedule! here's the timetable for tomorrow:

... by contrast, in my canon, the "dux" is repeated across both halves of the "comes". both the "dux" and the "comes" state the entire soggetto, with the "dux" stating it twice and the "comes" stating it once. hence, the soggetto has to combine with both halves of its augmented form ... (3/6)

... as Denis Collins notes, the latter sort of "complete" augmentation canon was a form that Bach never explored. Bach's augmentation canons are all of the "incomplete" sort. for "complete" augmentation canons, we need to turn to English Renaissance composers, e.g., John Bull, William Byrd (4/6) ...

... in Bach's canon, the augmented "comes" delivers half as many notes as the "dux". the "dux" comprises a single statement of the soggetto", but the "comes" only comprises the first half of the soggetto. hence, the soggetto only has to combine with the first half of its augmented form ... (2/6)

Philosophers have underperformed? Sorry we don’t have an easy discipline like science where you can answer questions by just going out and looking.

lately I've been classifying philosophical works into the categories of angry philosophy and chill philosophy

SCIENTISTS: publish an entirely reasonable paper on the embryological origins of different segments of the brain which won't come as a surprise to most biologists since the 90s who know about neural tube development SCIENCE PRESS OFFICE:

Ok, this "there are two separate brains" thing appears to be making the rounds, and I want to be absolutely clear: this is a press office overhyping some perfectly reasonable science that won't come as a surprise to most developmental biologists.

the scary thing about being woken up early by our twins is that in the dark they both look remarkably like Sadako from The Ring

I'm now reminded of Tim Thornton's maxims for eating pizza from Essential Philosophy of Psychiatry (2007, p. 68)

one of the worst arguments I've heard against putting pineapple on pizza is "it's not natural". what does that even ... ? never mind

we need a #PhilSky wiki so that people joining the starter packs can read up on the lore before posting
