Delighted to share that my second monograph, The Living Judas in Medieval Text and Image (working title), is now under contract with Cornell University Press @cornellupress.bsky.social! I am so grateful to @leverhulme.ac.uk & @paulmelloncentr.bsky.social for the time & support to work on this.
The on-ramp to academic monograph publishing is very long, and I used to delay my gratification until the moment a publication was alive, but I'm a new me, and I will celebrate every milestone now. Friends, I give you a webpage for my forthcoming book. uk.bookshop.org/p/books/impr...
Old English alert - new images of MS. Junius 11 are on Digital Bodleian and are much higher quality than the previous set from the 1990s. digital.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/objects/c534...
Can anyone recommend me some good stuff to read on the Book of Job? Medieval-era appreciated #medievalsky but any/all periods of interpretation also welcome, I would like to understand it more in general.
while the British Academy is using partial randomisation on its small grants -- and awarding more women/and POC researchers than ever before -- UKRI is feeding your painstakingly-developed proposal into an AI. But it's okay because they then get *two* AIs to debate whether you get the money.
Had a UKRI funded grant proposal rejected at the "AI triage stage". "This AI-based triage was used only to identify approximately 50% of the strongest proposals to take forward to full human review." 🧪 #academicsky

I love it when institutions step up & face the challenges. And this is @ihr.bsky.social stepping up.
Sure, will be directly helping only a few people, but what a solace to know clever people are trying to come up with support in the face of the overwhelming crisis. www.history.ac.uk/fellowships-...

As a two-time alumnus of Edinburgh Uni, it's hard not to despair at the short-sighted plans by management to decimate degree programmes across the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Solidarity to all affected by this act of utter vandalism.
The extent of the programmes being cut at the University of Edinburgh (where I took part in an event with Raja Shehadeh a fortnight ago) is extraordinary (archive.is/tACqv) - Celtic & Scottish Lit (UG), Scottish Literature (UG) & BD Divinity (UG) among the 90, not to mention Arabic & Persian.
With all of the emphasis on the Bayeux Tapestry this week, and with Rosh Hashanah about to start, it's reflecting that the world of William the Conqueror wasn't just a Christian one. The centuries before prior to 1066 had seen Jewish communities gradually expand North through Germany and France. 1/

My article 'Synagoga as Mother in Ekbert of Schönau's Stimulus amoris' is out now in JMRC 52.2, on a striking and influential medieval text that has gone understudied.

and finding this in the library when I first started teaching in Edinburgh almost 4 years ago was what motivated me to write more about this text.
Thank you to @iashedinburgh.bsky.social for awarding me a fellowship in 2024 to work on this & to all at the library who enabled me to visit MS 113!

I think this text can help shape our understanding of the familial and feminine tropes surrounding Christ and the Passion in medieval Christian sources.
The MS picture is Edinburgh MS 113, a fifteenth century manuscript from Erfurt containing a witness of this text. 2/
While this article isn't about this manuscript and focuses on one passage of the text in general (I'm working on a separate article about the Erfurt/Edinburgh witness), this manuscript has an exemplary catalogue record that identifies the Stimulus amoris and its correct author (Ekbert) 3/

One in four academic history positions in post-92s are gone since 2019 alone. One in four. We don't have data for 2025-6 and I doubt it magically got better.
My work at the moment is funded by a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions postdoc fellowship, and I've posted some updates in this thread on the project's own bsky @thaisisproject.bsky.social - will probably cross-post some here, but do follow if you're interested in all things 'harlot saints'!
Finally getting project social media up and running! It's been a rollercoaster first few months as a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions postdoc @ec.europa.eu at the University of Bergen, Norway 🇳🇴, and some great stuff has happened so far.

Last night the brilliant student group Mearcstapan launched their amazing zine The Wordhoard. It’s INCREDIBLE ✨😍👏 So proud of them! Creative medievalism for the win! And I’m delighted that Ella & Issi who founded the group will be writing about the project for @guildmedmak.bsky.social in July!
The student-led group Mearcstapan (united by their desire for inclusive, progressive medievalism) have published their first zine: The Wordhoard! It's beautifully produced and chocked full of creative-critical responses, articles, and even a 'which Old English poetry codex are you?' quiz.
Delighted to be joining Birkbeck, University of London in September as Lecturer in Medieval Studies. On this beautiful sunny day I have been in Bloomsbury meeting new colleagues!
