Even accepting the premise that AI produces useful writing (which no one should), using AI in education is like using a forklift at the gym. The weights do not actually need to be moved from place to place. That is not the work. The work is what happens within you.

"What is at stake is not conceptual or theoretical or ivory tower but instead intimate and personal. This is about the health of your grandmother and grandfather, your mother and father, your sister and brother, your children and grandchildren, and your spouse. This is realism, not alarmism."

Scientists and journalists need to figure out right quick how to explain to the average person how a massive change in research indirects will impact the medical care they and their children get (eg at the local children’s hospital), the education their children will get, the price of tuition, etc.

New — The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) was told this week by DOJ that they'd lose their funding if the org didn't remove any mentions of LGBTQIA+ issues from their public materials, I've learned. Staff were told they need to deadname trans kids in their reports to comply.

Every safety regulation was written in blood, frequently with a body count higher than one, and it’s not political to put the blame on people who want to “move fast and break things” when they start breaking human lives.

Maybe regulations and keeping qualified, experienced people in their positions is a good thing for the United States and our safety and security. But, I guess it's more important to destroy the "woke mind virus."

Protest, shout, push back, say they’re wrong, and save lives.

The Trump administration issued a waiver for lifesaving medicines and medical services, offering a reprieve for a worldwide HIV treatment program that was halted last week. Whether the waiver extended to preventive drugs or other services offered by the program was not immediately clear.

I am begging the national media to start taking this seriously. Stop buying the claims that the framing of "temporary" or "pause." They are altering the review processes of federally funded scientific research from merit-based peer review processes to political screening by ideologues.

Marisa Kabas@marisakabas.bsky.social

NEW — OMB temporarily pauses all agency grants and loans programs. Per copy of memo: "The use of Federal resources to advance Marxist equity, transgenderism, and green new deal social engineering policies is a waste of taxpayer dollars that does not improve the day-to-day lives of those we serve."

And these advances have helped more than just the field of proteomics, many of the advances in MS-based metabolomics and glycomics have built upon this NIH funded work.

Jeremy Berg@jeremymberg.bsky.social

Let me give a concrete example of the importance of applications with high risk-high reward as well as the role of NIH staff in taking risks. Decades ago, a physical chemist proposed ideas about doing mass spectrometry on proteins (when this was deemed probably impossible). 1/n

Never, ever let anyone tell you that there is no "moderator's dilemma" in the U.S. because of Section 230. Not when it took Vimeo SIXTEEN YEARS of litigation to defeat claims that ordinary content moderation created "knowledge" or "control," hence forfeiting the DMCA safe harbor for copyright.

Fuck cancer and fuck the idiots who write and approved this deadly and idiotic demand.

Aaron Reichlin-Melnick@reichlinmelnick.bsky.social

This is exactly the kind of chaos caused by Stephen Miller's poorly-written Muslim Ban; it was an executive order written by a guy who didn't know the details well enough to know the ramifications of the phrasing, so people with green cards got detained at airports. This is that, writ larger.
