Calls to slow down AI development are about market position, not safety. Open-weight models already rival proprietary tech in many engineering and automation tasks. Lowering inference costs threatens closed-source business models, driving those companies to push for pre-deployment licensing. (1/2)

Licensing creates a classic regulatory moat. US AI companies can easily absorb compliance costs, while open-weight and international competitors (like Kimi or GLM) face massive friction. It’s corporate self-preservation disguised as safety to consolidate US control. (2/2)

The AI bubble may be about to bust. Peter Thiel has sold all of his Nvidia stock. We all need to say this very clearly: NO BAILOUTS FOR THEFT-TECH! Expropriate their asses instead. They stole from all of us and fully plan to burn the planet. They owe us - not the other way around. 1/3

Time to start using my Bluesky account more properly. I've been pretty passive this year. Maybe that's why everything sucks so much these days? In any case, what should I write about here? 1. Complain about AI 2. Praise AI and predict what's coming next 3. Let an AI write everything here instead

I was playing around with Ultrawide Band (UWB)to test out some ideas I have. However, only the top tier Android phones (Pixel Pro and Samsung Galaxy S) have support for this. Meanwhile, the iPhone has supported this since the iPhone 11.

I don't think there's anyone who has used Bluetooth that would say that it's a nice technology from a user perspective. But why is this such a bad user experience and why has it not been fixed in the 25 years it has been around? The only exception is Apple, so it is possible to get it right.

So how can this be fixed? The only way is for Google and Apple (and Microsoft for Windows computers) to make their certification process cheaper and simpler. Bluetooth SIG has done better with the later updates to the standard, but we will be stuck with the broken parts for another decade at least.

Shameless plug: if you're working on integrating a Bluetooth device in a product and you're struggling with getting it to work smoothly, let me know and I can help out. I've worked with this for 10+ years now. :)

You know when you want to pair a new headset and there are multiple dialogs that appear and it seems like you're approving things multiple times? Sometimes you also get a question if you want to share your contacts with the device. Very confusing for most people.

The device manufacturers can make this easier, but due to bureaucracy very few do. In order to skip the annoying setup for a new device, the manufacturer needs to get it certified by both Apple and Google (iPhone and Android). It costs a lot and takes a lot of time. Most choose never to do this.

The effect is that it was nearly impossible to expand on the Bluetooth technology, because the abstraction level was too high. Adding new features was very difficult. To fix this the group added more and more profiles to cover all the use cases that appeared. This did not work out well.

Then came Bluetooth Low Energy. This is actually very different from classic Bluetooth, but unfortunately inherited a lot from the classic that kept the technology from being user friendly. Most new devices today use BLE, but they still suffer from the old stuff.

Bluetooth SIG (Special Interest Group) is the organization behind Bluetooth and a lot of the problems start with the specifications they create. This group chose to define the standard by predicting the all possible types of devices that would use Bluetooth.

Think of this as if ICANN would not let people define new domain names but instead have a standardized list of allowed domain names that you can use. The list would be updated with new approved names once a year. That was how the Bluetooth SIG defined the standard.

A question for my #iOS and #Android followers: Those of you who have apps using hardware features like Camera, Bluetooth, NFC or similar; are you writing integration tests for these features that you run automatically on your CI pipelines? If so, what's your setup for this?

Fun fact: If someone quotes a post of yours in a way that is unwelcome (as is commonplace on Twitter/X) there is a tool to combat the unwanted attention. Simply click the three dot menu on the quote post & click "Detach quote". This removes your post from their quote post. Useful to know, do share!

A few months ago I shipped a bug that broke a feature that users hit at app launch. When fixing it, I added a feature flag to disable that feature entirely if needed. I had to use that feature flag today. Use feature flags, my friends.

Any experts on #LLM who can shed some light on this? As we now can use ChatGPT and such to generate code for an entire application/system, why do we have to go through a high level language and not just generate machine code directly?

The obvious exception is a web client, but for other targets this should be possible? Are we not doing this because the LLMs haven't been trained on application binaries?
