Ahh I see Wildwood has struck up a conversation about what stories kids should be exposed to as if we didn’t all grow up watching Artax eat it in the swamp of sadness and “he can’t see without his glasses”

Teachers, parents, councilors, and students are working together to demand better conditions for our public school system. Please ask your councilors to put the Save Public Schools resolution on tomorrow's agenda. 9 councilors must sign off by noon today. Details on the ask linked below.

Councilor Mitch Green@councilorgreen.bsky.social

Over the last several days I've heard directly from parents who are scared and outraged about the PPS proposals for closure of their schools. They are calling for action from their elected officials at all levels. Today I have filed an emergency that responds to the urgency of these calls. 🧵

When I was little the bank we went to was literally gilded. It had columns & marble & mosaics. I was awed & knew clearly it was not there for me. Now banks are all bright colors, mascots, carpet, pretending to be your friend. So much more insidious.

sullivan never misses louis sullivan, home building association bank, newark, oh (1914)

Lately I've been having actual nightmares about city council and our school board, so that's how my shit is going. Anyhow if you're in Portland please go vote for actual progressives & write to the school board to say "stop this shit" so I can sleep better

folks always talking about lying in the forest until moss overtakes them but have you considered going to the desert & drying out until the sun can bleach your bones & the blowing sand can grind them into dust so you can fly along the breeze forever

Almost never! 🙃

8/ Fortunately, the technology seems to be improving. An independent evaluation last month found that newer AI models almost never endorsed suicide. This is a good step, but avoiding one type of harmful response doesn’t establish that a chatbot is safe across the many situations people bring to it.

I made a song radio playlist of Sixpence None The Richer's Kiss Me and holy wow it's like a firehose infusion of late 90's/early aughts rom-coms, like watching the entire genre all at once, this is amazing

Last night we tried to turn on a show for adults after bedtime - not all ages family viewing! Cabinet of Curiosities! Spookies! Anyhow we made it 1 minute and 16 seconds into it before kids shut the whole thing down. That was two tries, actually. At this rate it'll take 36 days to watch 1 episode.

I'd get someone to build me one of those little greenhouses pieced together from old windows, but double pane it & fully heat it so my plants & I could sit cozily in the sunniest part of my backyard on even the gloomiest day

question for the audience: if you were ultra rich (let’s say $25M), what completely frivolous thing are you buying?

I saw that LA is talking about closing schools, citing circa 2000 numbers for student populations as where schools ought to be, and I want to scream. I was a kid in those schools. We ran on year-round calendars because overcrowding made one calendar impossible - in some neighborhoods.

We shared books open across desks because we didn't have enough. Kids sat in the aisles because we didn't have enough room for that many desks. And these are the numbers they cite as Good? Fuuuuuuuuuck them

god, the way roving bins were a fixture of my life for years. Too many kids, another track is about to start, gotta help pile stuff in roving bins to relocate, make room, get out of the way, regular upheaval, don't get too attached to a space

If you don't know, that means 2-3-4 school year calendars overlapping to cut the population present at any one time. Lucky if you were on a track that loosely aligned with a traditional schedule, tough if you ran opposite. Lucky if your neighborhood simply didn't have to.

I've been watching Lovesick on netflix and really enjoying it but also noticing that I am too in my 40s to revel in the love triangle. Like, girl, they're both babes, but one loves all of you instead of just your thighs. One respects and admires your passions & wants to help you with your dreams,

one ignores your value & connection to a shared fight. One sees you as a whole person to stand by, one sees you as an idea to be picked up & dropped at his whim. Girl, girl! This isn't that hard! I'm only partway through, but falling hard on one side here.

Portland Public Schools Board, all fuckin' boo hoo, guess we'll just have to make things worse, nooooo alternative (don't look at the long list of alternatives)

ok but really, how do you, say, carry a mug or a bowl when both hands are on crutches? I've potentially got months of this and we're going into cozy warm drink/soup times

Kali@helloitskali.bsky.social

In the ingoing saga of Oops I Fell Down and Exploded My Leg Apparently: I have been upgraded to two crutches custom fit instead of one borrowed crutch! I am so much faster now! Also I no longer know how to carry non-pocket/baggable things now that both hands are occupied with mobility, hrmm

Feeling tired of explaining that an org funded by people pushing for deregulation & privitization might, no matter what pretty words are on their website, do what their funders want and work towards deregulation & privitization. That a member of that org might, no matter what they claim as goals,

actually work to arrange the goals of their org's funders (deregulation & privitization). That media whose owner likes deregulation & privitization might give (gasp) a biased perspective promoting deregulation & privitization instead of unbiased inclusion of other possibilities.

@courtneymilan.com I recently finished The Earl Who Isn't, what a delight. So much resonated deeply, and so much made me laugh out loud. Andrew trying to subtly muss the tidy corners of his cleaning cloth was such quality physical comedy I have been laughing at it for days. Thank you!

I've got this write up of a Portland Public Schools community session re: school closures stuck in my head today because the idea of collecting vulnerable children in few, known locations with known schedules as ICE ramps up horrifying actions makes me want to throw up.

well now I have a neat new thing to do

hey all, just a heads up to my artist peers- this is all AI slop, I would avoid this. It isn't adobe code, it's just vibecoded to emulate their features.

James O'Malley@jamesomalley.co.uk

Holy shit. Someone has decompiled the Adobe suite, rebuilt it in Rust and released it as open source. Either all software is dead or the US copyright laws are about to receive an update. getartcraft.com/apps

for so long I lived in cities with strong textile districts and I'd scoff at Joanns for years now I've lived in areas lacking that luxury and wow WOW I miss Joanns on the regular

so Portland Public Schools is just gonna decimate my immediate neighborhood culture, damage my/many children's education, & embrace a death spiral, boo-hooing that they have no other choice because finances, while giving the superintendent a big raise & ignoring any other options hate this for us

Ok, seeking family movie recs with tough example parameters: - Wallace & Gromit/Beauty & the Beast tend to be too stressful - KPop Demon Hunters has far too terrifying emotional stakes (demons ok, risk of emotional ostracization Too Much) - Some 1930s films like Scarlet Pimpernel / Pygmalion ok??

- some musicals like Singin' in the Rain & The Wizard of Oz also ok - Muppets hit or miss on scariness (I know) - can't be too rude, too scary, too violent, have too much meanness or fighting or they'll reject it - I would like to not be bored to tears Please help, my family media is starving

Love having a big enough injury to require multiple specialist offices so they can give me directions that are diametrically opposed. Cool, cool, going great, definitely can do opposite things simultaneously.

I saw a glimpse of a huge pink princess dress in the stands and was so struck by it, how very much that kid deserves baseball like any other and right now they're getting it
