Just wanted to add that if you think learning to read Hittite would be cool, but feel very daunted by the prospect, good news! Hittite works pretty much along the same model as Greek, Latin, or German (or most Slavic languages), but has way fewer endings to learn! The basic vocabulary is smaller!

So this story of ‘Xī and Hé’ (羲和) being punished comes from the Book of Documents, which mentions an event interpreted as an eclipse (乃季秋月朔, 辰弗集于房). Several dates have been suggested by researchers, though the one for 2137 BCE (an annular eclipse over China) seems to have gained the most acceptance

Obsidian amulet (early 1st millennium BCE) depicting Lamaštu (𒀭𒈚𒃵𒈨), ‘daughter of the god Anu’, a feared lion-headed demon who was cast down from heaven. She roams the earth preying on newborns and pregnant women. The reverse has an incantation in Sumerian calling on various gods to exorcise her

Editions disagree on whether 𒆗𒁀𒁴 should be read here as lab‐ba‐tim or kal‐ba‐tim (lit. ‘bitch’) since the sign 𒆗 has both readings (kal or lab). The text continues describing how she slips past through the socket (ṣerrum) of a door, attacks a child (šerrum) and is cursed to wander the steppe (ṣērum)

We don’t know what his specific offence was, but as a royal astrologer, he seems fearful of reporting bad portents. After two years in prison the despondent Marduk‐šapik‐zeri writes to the king, to either have him executed by his sword, or to let him keep ‘watching the stars of the sky’.

Some reasons why you should read about Beja: - Uses more internal morphology than any other Cushitic language; - Earliest recorded Cushitic language (in an ostracon of ~6th c. AD) - Classification still controversial - is it really Cushitic, or a separate branch of Afroasiatic?

It may be broken and look unremarkable, but this is a rather unique cuneiform tablet, one of a handful written in the Akkadian language, but using the Ugaritic (consonantal) script, instead of logosyllabic signs. The tablets, from Ugarit, were produced around 1250 BCE, likely by the same scribe.

The content of this tablet is equally interesting, as it is a short but close parallel of the Maqlû incantation invoking the ‘veiled bride’, attested in Mesopotamian tablets from later centuries, though rather than a spell against witchcraft, the text of the Ugarit tablet reads more like a hymn.

andrew phillips@herfst.bsky.social

The veiled bride (kallātu kuttumtu) also part of the incantation, is identified with Gula, goddess of medicine. This and a few other tablets from Assyria belonged to junior exorcist (āšipu ṣeḫru) Kiṣir-Nabû. Copied from older tablets, they add commentary that would help in the study of magic texts.

Interpreting the Akkadian corpus attributed to Ṯabʾilu, the scribe in question, is not without difficulties, due to its paucity and fragmentary state. Despite these limits, it offers a window into the rich scribal culture of Ugarit (today Ras Shamra, Syria).

andrew phillips@herfst.bsky.social

Lexical tablet from Ugarit ca 1400–1100 BCE, it lists words in Akkadian (left column), Hurrian (centre), and (syllabic) Ugaritic (right) king = [šar-ru] | i-we-er-ni | ma-al-ku lord = [be]-lu | e-wi-ri | ba-a-lu-ma enemy = [nak₂]-ru | tu-ur-bi | e-bu curse = [a-ra]-ru | ši-da-ar-ni | ṣi-il-ya-[tu₄]

The Gods of the Night (ilū mušīti), who are invoked in the opening incantation of the Maqlû, a series of Akkadian anti-witchcraft texts, are identified in commentary tablets with three groups of stars Zappu, the Bristle—Pleiades Alû, the Bull of Heaven—Taurus Šitaddaru, the Shepherd of Anu—Orion

My biggest lesson of this week: how many people didn’t understand what Zionism meant! Of course Zionism is racism, like all ethnonationalism and all colonial occupation. 🤷🏼‍♀️

And you will watch tens of thousands more die before you find a way to fight genocide and Zionism that doesn't require pissing off a lot of people.
